Just about everywhere you go and everything you see now-a-days has some kind of association to Facebook, so I finally got a Facebook account the other day (didn't have one before) and I've got to say I just don't get it.

You don't sit back after creating an account and suddenly you "get it". I had an account dwindling for months until I finally had a look around it. Found some old school buddies and colleagues. Was great getting back in touch with them.

Now I mostly use it for family stuff, since it makes tracking birthdays and events a lot easier, and then the photo albums of those events. Facebook for family, Twitter for the rest. They're both really useful tools especially if you don't interact with everyone you know every day.

I'm in the same boat since I don't really get it either. My guess is we're just not cool enough. It's ok though, I've learned to accept it.

Well, I tried looking for people I know/knew and if they had a unique name they weren't on Facebook, or if they had a more common name I couldn't differentiate if they were they person I knew or not. Off the top of my head I don't know anyone on Facebook.

surely you know someone...c'mon you cannot be THAT secluded, FB has 500+ MILLION users. sounds like you're just being dramatic, and asserting your "hipness" as a non-FB user. get over yourself, you don't lose cool points or a man card by utilizing social networking....

...then again...."dew guy"...."1999"...maybe i'm wrong

oh that's right...I don't want to oversell the MOST SUCCESSFUL SOCIAL NETWORKING SITE EVER CREATED. So taking into account possible multi-users their numbers must be much closer to....oh, say 499.98 MILLION USERS! get lost with your multiple account BS. If you can't find someone you know on Facebook you need to get off of MR and make some friends.

5 years from now ... a common phrase will be "I cannot believe I was on Facebook"

Facebook is a waste

...fixed it for you, you're welcome.

there's no doubt numerous people (some with multiple accounts even) misuse/underuse/waste the features FB offers. But this isn't myspace, it's a real tool to that real people utilize. Zuckerberg is even worth more than Jobs!...that's not to imply FB is at all better than Apple, but c'mon people who don't think FB has a real use haven't really used it.

Yeah, anyone who doesn't have a Facebook is trying to prove how cool they are.

I don't have a Facebook account. I know how to keep in touch with people I want to stay in touch with. If I haven't been in touch with someone for years, there is probably a reason for it. I have no desire to get in touch with people I haven't seen in years, and most of my family and closest friends don't have an account or don't update it. Then again, a lot of my friends are paranoid computer security types.

I just deleted my Facebook account. Was wonderful going through the canceling procedures and it showing me a picture of my ex telling me she will miss me. She really looked like she missed me in the picture

Oh how many hours I wasted on that website....

I like a quote that I read from one of the other Facebook threads...

If you have a crappy Facebook experience, it's because you have crappy friends!

Facebook is all about keeping in contact with my friends in a very casual way. It lets me keep in touch with people I haven't seen in years, and even the people I see regularly it helps me keep up to date on how they're doing. That stuff is important to me, which is why I find Facebook compelling.

Maybe, I'm hip (hi res, thinks so) or un-hip. Maybe, I'm cool or is it un-cool. Whatever. Maybe in my small middle-aged world I just don't know the right hip/un-hip or cool/un-cool people. Whatever. I've got an account, I'm on Facebook. Okay, I guess, I "get" Facebook.

Exactly. I've kept in touch with past lecturers who occasionally help me out, meet ups with old buddies who've moved far away. That's what makes it compelling to me.

Wow, someone really loves Facebook..;)

I found lots of people I knew in high school, and use it to keep in touch with some other friends, but it's an annoying experience most of the time. It's the games I don't get... some people seem to be playing those things 24/7. Also, the people who post stuff like "Joe Blow is checking his Facebook."

Do I "get" Facebook?
Not quite yet…

Perhaps when I am older it'll all fall in place.
Right now it seems as if most of my friends and acquaintances around my age (47) are not fussed about being on Facebook.

But, the older ones, uncles, aunts and parents and their friends are almost all Facebook users.

Then again everyone I know below, say, 30 has a Facebook account and use it all the time "to keep in touch".

So does Facebook "life" start around 12, run wild through your twenties/thirties and then take a dip through the forties only to revive with a vengeance when you hit late fifties? ;)
Time will tell.)

Strange that I don't find it useful because I love technology in all forms.
Or it could be that I just do not think I have anything interesting to scribble on some virtual wall.
But I guess, as always, YMMV.
*Shrug* :)

You know, it's people like you that put it in perspective. While I have one, and enjoy it at times, there are a lot of times I don't. I work at a college presently, and previously worked a high school about a city block away from one another. Naturally, when I made the transition, so did students of the time...

Well, guess who a lot of my Faceberg friends are... Kids! Kids with drama! That I get to read all over my wall! BLAH!

While I love the fact that I can catch up with my cousin who is pregnant in North Carolina, and an Aunt that's building a house in Maine, and a cousin who's a vet in NYC, I also HATE the fact that I read everyone's problems / that they're "going to bed now / getting up now / eating now / sitting now / breathing now / doing nothing now"...

Other than that, Faceberg's not bad. I guess.

I've been on Facebook for awhile, as others have said it's a nice way to keep up with friends in faraway places. Twitter, on the other hand, befuddles me. I don't understand why anyone would use Twitter at all.

How and Why? iCal already works great for Birthdays. It automatically brings in all the birthdays from people in your Address Book and assigns them to a virtual "Birthdays" calendar. It works very well. Same for other events. And guess what? It also syncs to your iPhone so you get reminders on the go. Facebook doesn't help with any of this... it's just another middle layer that gets in the way.

I disagree. Facebook is useless. I don't want to "reconnect" with people I went to grade school with. I know who my friends are, and I still keep in touch with classmates who I want to keep in touch with. There's plenty of sites on the internet Photobucket, even MobileMe if I want to share photo albums. I have Address Book and iCal to manage events, contacts, Birthdays, etc.

Facebook brings nothing to the table other than a consolidated web interface, which I don't need, and the ability to read about the boring everyday minutia in the lives of a bunch of vain idiots. Which I definitely don't need. Facebook will come and go and in a few years, no one will even remember them.

I have friends and family that seemingly spend all the time and energy on FB. I like it, so that I keep in touch with family/friends so its nice for that.
