Hey guys! Im currently using ios 10 on an iPhone 6 (so no rise to wake) and my question is how lockscreen should behave because I think that it is wrong for me or im missing something.

So, to turn the screen on i have to press either the home or power button; lockscreen shows the phone to be locked with the lock icon on top.

To unlock i have to options:
1. Press the home button and either enter the passcode or use touch id
2. Directly use touch id to unlock without leaving the lockscreen and going to homescreen: to actually go to the homescreen i have to press the button. Right?

BUT!!! Option 2 seems to randomly just unlock the device and sometimes it unlocks the phone leaving the lockscreen and going to the homescreen without having to press the home button.

I know it is kind of cofusing but i dont know if im missing something or not.

Thx in advance guys!!!

I think thats how it works now. Mine is the same way.

I can either press home and hold to enter my home screen bypassing the lock screen. Or if I want to see the lock screen, I press once and then press again to enter home. It gives me the option of where I want to go instead of automatically unlocking the phone like previously.

Yes but my problem es basically that with screen on, phone locked, resting my finger on the sensor sometimes unlocks it and sometimes it takes me to the homescreen.

And I cant seem to understand what im doing different in each case.

There is an option in Settings>General->Accessibility->Home Button->Rest Finger To open.

With this feature on it allows you to unlock the device when the you are viewing the lock screen by just resting your finger on the sensor. If you turn this feature off you will have to press the button to activate touch id and unlock the device.

I think the confusion here is that most people don't realize there is a distinction between "unlocking" and "opening" - which, prior to iOS 10, they were both done at the same time with touchID or PIN entry. In iOS 10, they made it so you could "unlock" the phone without opening by waking (either raise-to-wake or using the wake button) then resting your finger on the home button. In this unlocked-but-not-opened state, you can interact with the widgets/notifications.

Prior to iOS 10, unlocking automatically also "opened" so everyone was conditioned to think of it as one atomic action, when it was always two actions which happened automatically sequentially. They've just now made them more distinct to give more functionality to the widgets/notifications.

Yes, i get that this "should" be the new way...

But try to follow this example...

SOMETIMES, if I wake the phone and rest my finger to unlock it, it actually does and takes my to the home screen, basically like before in IOS9 (or like having the new feature in the accessibility menu ON)

and

SOMETIMES, if i wake the phone and rest my finger to unlock it, it just do that and keeps me in the lock screen so I can interact with the widgets, so if I want to go to the home screen I have to actually press the home button. (this I think is supposed to be the correct behavior of the new lock screen and NOT what happens SOMETIMES as described above)...

What do you have for Settings -> Touch ID & Passcode -> Require Passcode

Mine is set to immediate, so some form of authentication (i.e fingerprint) is required every time to access the phone. IF your setting is 30 seconds, 1 minute or more, then I think you have been trying to access your phone within that time period only to find you can access without authentication.

Yeah, thought on that and it's set to immediately.

I experience the same issue (iPhone 6). Sometimes it unlocks and stays put while other times it unlocks and immediately goes to the Home screen. My "Require Passcode" setting is on Immediately as well. I've just tested it repeatedly and it's about 1 out of every 4 tries it jumps to the Home screen. That's with using a very light touch as well to make sure I wasn't accidentally pressing the button. I've had glitches with the Home button in the past so I can only figure there must be some debris beneath my Home button affecting it. I've had problems where Siri would repeatedly activate and I would have to press the button a few times to fix it.

Interesting to find someone with the same behavior, BUT i'm quite sure my home button is working correctly.

I think it depends on how you woke the phone. If you use the sleep button on the side or the raise-to-wake feature, resting your finger on Touch ID will unlock without opening.

If you click the home button to wake the phone (using a non-registered finger, for example, or the edge of your main finger), then the phone will fully open the next time you rest your finger on the scanner.

To me the system is kind of insane and too complicated. I think I'm going to turn on the rest-to-open option. I tried to wrap my head around the new system to see if it had benefits but it's just weird.

The new system makes no sense, just use the old one.

Tap the Home button to wake the phone, swipe left to see your widgets, swipe right to see your camera, swipe up to read your notifications. If you need to go into the home screen, rest your finger on the Home button and it fully unlocks.

No idea why they have it this other way by default, it's like Apple has taken stupid pills, first the elimination of the headphone jack, then bright white notifications, then an inverted Home button. Enough already.

Yeah... I thought about waking the phone with the power or home button would make a difference, but it doesn't... Also remember that I'm using an iPhone 6, so no rise to wake feature here... I'm starting to think this is just a bug: The correct behavior should be: Wake your phone by pressing either button, then unlock it using touch ID and then ALWAYS press the home button to go to the home screen and not just sometimes... There doesn't seem to be a constant around this strange behavior; really don't know what are the conditions to just unlock the device and going directly to the home screen without pressing the home button.

ps.: Just to be clear, there's ONE way to go directly to the home screen with having to press the home button and that's when when you wake your phone pressing the home button and KEEPING your finger on it until it goes to the home screen. This works as it should; again, the problem seems to be related to the fact that RANDOMLY the phone takes you to the home screen after you have waken it and unlocked it using touch id.

I'm sorry, I don't get what you're talking about.

* First turn on "rest finger to open" (restores iOS 9 functionality)

* Press and release the Home button (backlight comes on, phone is awake)

* Rest your finger on the Home button (phone unlocks)

You are now taken to the last window you had open when the phone went to sleep. If sometimes that's the Home screen, it's because it was the last thing you were looking at before you tapped the side power button or let 30 seconds expire. If sometimes that's Safari or iMessage or Google Maps or Music its because that was the last thing you were looking at before you tapped the side power button or let 30 seconds expire.

If you always want to return to the Home screen, either make sure you navigate there before you put the phone to sleep or after you rest your finger to unlock quickly press the Home button.

I get the same behavior randomly. Even testing it I can't get it to do it all the time. Press home, take finger off, wait 1 second, and rest and it will unlock but stay on lock screen. Try it again but wait 3 seconds and it will go to home screen. Again wait 3 seconds and it will unlock and stay at lockscreen. Same issue on air 2 and i6.

No no... you are right, I was still still describing the issue without activating the accessibility option... I know that if you activated it brings the phone back to its IOS9 behavior.

Thx!

THIS!

I'm quite sure that this must be a bug on devices that don't have the rise to wake function.

Just revert to the iOS 9 functionality in the Accessibility menu, none of the stuff matters after that. You get no credit for discovering a bug. Move on.

I think the difference, at least with my iPhone 6, is whether I have any notifications on my lock screen. If I do, then using Touch ID will just unlock the phone, but won't open it to the home screen. If I don't have any notifications, then using Touch ID will unlock the phone and take me directly to the home screen.

I didn't mean to sound snooty (sorry!) just meant that Apple won't care, nothing to do with you.

Bottom line is that for people without rise-to-wake functionality the Home button should default to iOS 9 behavior as it has no benefit to anyone and will actually cause more clicks which is the last thing we need. Apple often makes no sense, this is one of those times.

But then you lose lock screen functionality. This should definitely get fixed and I was also wondering if someone else was having the issue.

No you don't.

I just tap the Home button and I can scroll through my notifications, swipe left for the camera, swipe right for widgets, etc. right on the lock screen while the phone is still locked.

When it's in a locked state you can't see activity info or find my friends. That's just the widgets I've noticed not giving data when locked. Changing to tap to unlock (ios9 behavior) you can't use these widgets at all. It will just jump to the home screen as per setting.
