why is it that 6months ago this phone could have smelled like dog crap and it would have jumped off the shelves, but now its launch time and people act like they have had the phone and used it to the max and its a pice-o-crap?
some one is allways looking for somthing to hate.
 
I don't hate the iPhone. I just don't think its all that and a bag of chips.
I never planned on getting an iPhone at launch. My contract is up in November. We'll see then if its worth it.
 
b/c people finally realize how much it cost, saying they would get it to be cool but when time comes no bueno.

I don't hate the iPhone either. And after the initial excitement of the announcement and as more details are known (as of now).

The iPhone killers for me are:

- The lack of 3G support (and from what I have been reading in looking for a new phone and/or service), and the lower data rate of the Edge network compared to the speeds of Verizons and Sprints EV-DO network.

- The lack of GPS in the phone. A small issue since some phones I am looking at don't have either.

- What appears to be a sealed battery. On my Treo 650, I have a spare ready to go when it is needed.

- As a Mac user, the lack of a Preview type OS X app to view PDF files from day one. Not willing to wait and see if it happens AFTER I pay for the iPhone.

- The hefty price for a limited function phone/PDA type gear

- The lack of being of using it as a modem with my Mac laptop - or so it seems at this point.....

But there are things that make me doubt my feelings everyday as the launch day approaches:

- A great, sleek design

- Some great apps and their implementation at launch

- Being among the first 3 million to have one shortly after launch - if the Page 2 rumors are true.
 
I think the general populace has gotten used to Apple "surprising" us with new features. As a result of this, they expected the iPhone to gain features along the way, when it really didn't. A lot of people expected Steve Jobs to announce at some point during the past 6 months "Oh, by the way the iPhone will have 3G, a replaceable battery, 3rd party software development support and it will also cure cancer". Although Apple's style of marketing has worked well in the past, I feel like the incredible hype over the iPhone may have caused it to backfire this time.
 
I said it once and I'll say it again.

I am so looking forward to the fact that I am not getting an iPhone on Launch Day or anytime too soon. I have a great phone that wasn't cheap and I expect to use it awhile longer. My contract doesn't run out till March and that will be about perfect timing to see how well the iPhone does and what problems it might have. And I would prefer a 16GB rev. B or whatever is available once they upgrade it. Now a brand new Mac I really want, so release that damn phone so you can upgrade your friggin desktops already. The iMac and Mac Pros are overdue!!!

I actually love new Apple stuff, think the iPhone is awesome and if my contract was up and whatnot I would probably get one that day, especially since my B-day is the following Monday. But I am glad to be waiting, for as much as I want a touchscreen iPod and uberkewl phone/browser and all that other stuff to play with touchscreen, I don't want to be an early adopter test group at $500-600, and not get the advantages of a rev. B. I bought an Apple TV the week they hit stores and got burned by $100 more 160GB models coming out 2 months later, which really irked me. Remember the 1st MacBooks and all the problems they had, hopefully the iPhone won't have that, but I don't won't to talk to customer support more than anyone else on my iPhone and I think 8 and 16GB models will come out by early 2008.

Did you read it. I would love one. Just won't early adopt. And I elaborated quite a bit on the original post. Not to mention it was one other thread. As far as the idiotic comment posts, it is really aggravating when a newbies first post is a new thread which makes the iPhone sound smarter then they are. The things people ask make me think of cartoons and frying pans. What is really unfortunate is total lack of common sense and independant thinking of most of our younger culture these days. A sense of entitlement, want everything for free or cheaper, don't want to work for it, can't spell at all, the list goes on and on. But I'll stop ranting.

I hear ya, I am even looking at the Sprint IP-830W by Samsung... with a plan it will still be $500! So price is not an issue for me, it is all about features and benefits.
 
I want one because my iPod broke, I like the features, I would like a new phone, and all the cool kids are going to get one so ... ya know....I would be a fool NOT to get one right?...right :cool:

As someone with that kind of touchscreen scrolling on a work handheld, I can tell you that it's fun for just under a week. You just can't stop doing it at first. It's great.

Then it gets more tiring, especially if you have to scroll long distances.

That's why the iPhone contacts has an alphabetical direct-go index also. That's why the iPhone photo viewer also has buttons to go fore/back. (Can you imagine swiping your way through a hundred pics, with your finger obscuring everything? Yuck.)

Believe me, it's the touchscreen glitz that's selling this thing, but it's the lack of hardware buttons that will be its Achilles heel.

I had to scroll from LA to NYC. My finger was just a bloody nub after that one. I advise not to scroll long distance.

I beg to differ, buttons require a mental abstraction that is unintuitive to assign them functions for each app and screen. On iPhone that same function is represented by a interactive grafik object on screen. You will fid that for non power users the iPhone approach is vastly superior. The same way the move from command line to GUI was.
 
i agree...buttons are unintuitive...touching and such is much better

to those who say scrolling is a pain...apple have put 'touch buttons' as shortcuts...amking just as usable as anything else....also, the apple software detects if you wanna go faster (ala iPod) and u can get through 1,000 songs in 3-4 seconds (like i'm doing right now)

Apple gave us way to much time to think about the iPhone... for me it's like that: If there's a totally new, geeky gadget out there, I want to have it. However, the iPhone doesn't feel new anymore.. it feels like a six month old device with quite a lot of disadvantages.
 
I don't hate iPhone either, I think Apple have done really well and done their best to capitalize on their brand credibility to gamble in such a competitive market of phones, but its just not upto the mark.

ofcourse none of us have ever been near an iPhone (and neither have you, still you swear that iPhone is revolutionary, yes revolutionary, a web browser with no flash support, a phone with no MMS, a device with mac OS X on it and only web 2.0/AJAX app support) but those actually had spent some time with iPhone haven't come out raving about how uber cool it is ....


Apple's own emplyee (vp is he?) messed up the onscreen keyboard this WWDC, some of Apple's most loyal reviewers have been keeping a very low key and reserving their judgement till 29th .. PLUS what I have seen and heard makes me think that iPhone is a complete DUD! I think I would keep my money and get the ultra portable from Apple when it comes out.
 
It has 5 negatives in my book
1. price
2. 2 year contract with one of the worst companys
3. no flash
4. price
5. Cingular sucks in NY state.
 
I guess I'm one of the rare few people who was excited about the iPhone when it was announced and am still excited about it today. I currently have a contract with Cingular and the phone I got with them was free (but still very nice). It has what Steve Jobs calls the "baby Internet" which sucks, and it's run entirely on Java (it's a Sony Ericsson).

Now I realize a lot of people are happy with their Treo's or whatever. I'm looking at the iPhone for what it does now and what it potentially can do in the future. I'm sure Apple will put a lot of development into the iPhone and continually add cool new software and features. I'm not counting on this because it may not happen, but I'm happy with what it can do straight out of the box.

I would like to see a Messenger client (something like Adium) available as a full-on application, but hey, can't win them all. GPS is something I can see as being useful for the Google Maps application, but it's not vital to me. I plan on using the iPhone primarily for it's data capabilities and less for its phone ability. If Apple where to release the same device sans the phone part, I'd eat it up, even if it was $600. So the phone part is just icing on the cake as far as I'm concerned. Consider this: 8GB iPods are $250 by themselves, and the iPhone is leaps and bounds above the iPod Nanos. It's also a killer data device and a phone. When you add all that together, you come out at a price very close to what they're selling it for.

I sort of went on longer than I intended, but I just wanted to say that the iPhone is still very much an item on the top of my "Most Wanted Gadget" list. I just need to justify buying it, as I would need to justify spending $600 on anything. :) Who knows, maybe I'll be out there on the 29th buying one along with the rest of the world.
 
I feel like the odd one out here, I was never excited by the iphone, and I'm completely unexcited by it right now.

Okay, I can't argue that it isn't neat and a technological achievement in terms of how polished the "smartphone" has become. But I don't ever see myself using one, I have a RAZR right now that I use exclusively for calling, nothing else. I can't see myself browsing the internet on an iPhone, sending email, etc. I just feel so out of place accessing the internet on anything less then a fully fledged computer. The iPhone also has only 8GBs of memory, which I feel is a bit low for such an expensive device. The fact that I have about 20 months left on my T-Mobile contract also disappoints me, I understand the need for exclusivity, but I don't see Apple winning much in this deal.

$699 for a phone which I would only use for calling, just doesn't excite me.
 
I wasn't going to get one until rev B but my (cingular SLVR) phone was just destroyed when I dropped it at work, it hit at the perfect angle to crack the screen...I'm not on a contract for about a year now, but it was working fine (and I actually used the iTunes part of it connected to my car, despite 2 other iPods but I don't like carrying multiple devices.) So now I'm thinking I'll wait and see if I can get one near release, hopefully they aren't going to be out of stock for weeks...

Yep, same here. Similar thing happened when I first saw two-finger scrolling on a G4 powerbook's trackpad. Haven't been able to surf with my old workhorse G3-900 ibooks ever since. They are relegated to recipe server and net monitor status...

But will I still love my U2 iPods after scrolly, landscapey iPhone comes here?

well.. yes.. they still have those cool autographs on the backs... and i love the red and black.
 
If someone doesn't buy one it doesn't make them any less of an apple fan. nobody can or will buy every single product that a company makes.
