After receiving a replacement as the first was declared DOA I am LOVING it.

My first one was declared DOA as well (wouldn't go to sleep when I closed the lid), but the second one has been wonderful. Although, I kind of regret putting the Invisible Shield on it now. I think the fingerprints and smudges actually got worse than if I had left it off.

But it sure does look sexy! :D

Great to hear that. Not only did you make a smart choice, for I think too many people underestimate the MacBook, but you also did it at a time when so many people are saying wait, updates/leopard is coming. Enjoy your Mac now, upgrade the OS later if you want.

I couldn't agree more! What is the point in waiting? If you wait for the next best thing you'll never buy anything! And aswell it really infuriates me when people shamelessly badmouth the Macbook because of their ungrounded prejudices. I have just ordered a Macbook and I can't wait for it to arrive. I will post back here when I am having a great time on my first mac. (I am typing this on an Acer Aspire :()

Great Thread

I love my MBP!! Got it from the apple refurb store, great place to save money and get essentially a new machine. This is my second MB, I had a CD and loved that so I upgraded and now have my parents hooked on macs too.
Thanks Apple!!

I'm very pleased with my macbook so far. It is my first mac. I do think I'd like to get a MBP though so at the end of the year I might give this to my wife and buy a MBP for myself. I have no complaints with the MB at all. Because of this machine, I doubt I will ever buy another windows pc.

I'm also loving my macbook!! It's my first mac (used to have an apple IIe if that counts). I just upgraded to 2GB RAM and a Seagate 160GB HDD, I definetly see a MBP in my future.

No regrets, but...

I would have been happier if it didn't take 3 tries to get a working one, and if the Apple Store in Reno didn't take my 1st machine for 10 days (my entire vacation) only to return it to me unrepaired and with severe case damage. In all fairness, after a couple of hours on the phone with corporate (back when SkypeOut was free!) I had the manager of my local store in Cambridge personally hand me a new one and swap my hard drive out within five minutes of entering the store. All in all things have worked out. Now if only I didn't have that dang crack over the IR sensor life would be grand.

am i the only one that feels even better about not waiting now that leopard is delayed? im not happy it is, i was going to get it in june anyways, but now it's like hey good choice... even though i do know that because leopard is not released doenst mean SR will in june.. but still it feels good not to have waited...;) :D

Nice thread!

Although I ultimately chose the MBP when shopping for a new Mac last August, I still appreciate the coolness of the MacBooks...especially the black one

But both the white and black models are beauties in their own right and from what I've heard, they run very nicely also. I am considering buying a MacBook for my wife who still lives in PC hell :D

I've been through all (and many samples of each) Apple macbook pros and macbooks over the the past year and a half and am now back to using a macbook. Give the balance of power, design, portability, quality and price, I think the macbook can't be beat. If the Macbook pro 2.16ghz had a really good display, I think it would be worth about $1799, but considering that it has a poor display, it really is overprices IMO. I mean, since when did we start paying for more less and feel good about it?

the 17" was really nice, but I couldn't get used to lugging it everywhere, not to mention the general awkwardness of handling it - and the display that would fall whenever I carried it with the display open and the back of the computer too high vis-a-vis the front (unforgivable design error IMO)

Anyway, why I like the macbook better than the MBPs:

-better overall design
-better wifi reception
-better battery life than the 15" and about the same as 17"
-arguably better display (no grain, quite even illumination, crisp)
-magnetic latch
-I actually like the keyboard better though that's a personal thing. It feels crisper and require a much more gentle touch which is good if you're working on for long periods. The MBP is nice too, but never felt as crisp.
- better size
-even if I like the feeling of the metal of he MBP, I think plastic is a more suitable material for laptops unless you go with some composite material instead.

What I don't like:

- sharp edges around - not a deal breaker, but they shouldn't be there
- poor sound quality
- ridiculously materials: black smudges like nothing I've ever seen and the white scratches like nothing I've ever seen (though luckily the scratches aren't very visible - unlike the smudges on the black one)
- I worry about the cracks that people are having. They seem to be a consequence of the design itself which means that more people will have the problem.

Otherwise, I think the macbook is a great, powerful and very nice computer to use. we're all fortunate!

I have been a windows user since I can't remember, but recently I have switched to the dark side, the blackbook side that is, and I am loving it! The Mac interface was confusing at first but it took me just two days to complete the switch, it's that intuitive! Plus the sexy look and interface is just so much eye candy :D The only gripe I had was the still lack of capabilities of games to utilize the new Intel processors, WoW runs faster on windows bootcamp than on mac, but I'm thinking that's gonna change in the near future, consider me a new mac addict!

I've had my macbook for almost a year and I'm still in love with it. Best thing I ever did was switch. So many awesome tools, programs, and functions, that I've got my co-workers interested. I'm the Mac spokesperson at Frito Lay :)

Once you go black. . .

I had a white macbook, but I traded it in for a black one and I love it.

The white macbook gets tiny little scratches, so get the invisishield.

The black macbook doesn't scratch as easily, but gets fingerprints. Carry a microfiber cloth.

Both macbooks need palmrest protectors of some kind. The marware protectors are thick and leathery, very nice and luxurious. The invisishied ones are thin and unobtrusive.

The black macbook does not look like a PC. It has a huge white apple on the back that's visible from about 400 yards away. If it resembles any PC, it looks like Lenovo/IBM thinkpads, which are high-end, slick and durable.

The white macbook is pretty, classic Mac. It's youthful and playful and fun.

The black macbook is more "professional," but it can play too.

Both are beautiful and FAST, the best notebooks I've seen in years.

Hooray Macbook!

Give it a few months when your black macbook looks like a greased up monkey and the trackpad screams at you everytime you look at it ;)

2 weeks with my black macbook - no regrets
6 months in - I bought a macbook pro

MacBook Pro rocks hard.

The grease wipes right off the black macbook, though. At least right now. . . we'll see in a month or so. ;)

Oh, and I got the trackpad sticker to keep the trackpad from getting all shiny and gross.

Add me to the list.

My first Mac is this 2-week old black MacBook. Works great in OSX and Vista. I think the dual functionality makes it a very good value compared to other similarly equipped notebooks given that it is about the same price.

I hooked up my USB midi keyboard, launched GarageBand and the darn thing worked immediately. It took me DAYS of frustration to get something similar to work with a ThinkPad, an Echo Indigo and a copy of Sonar. Even then, the reliability was poor. The Mac will run iTunes concurrently with GarageBand - trying iTunes with Sonar to "play along" made both applications completely stop producing sounds on the PC.

I don't think this will be my last Mac...

well I have a paper on my wall right now that says "Order Summary: MacBook 2.16 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo - White"

This thread just made my wait harder. :(
