I've been through all (and many samples of each) Apple macbook pros and macbooks over the the past year and a half and am now back to using a macbook. Give the balance of power, design, portability, quality and price, I think the macbook can't be beat. If the Macbook pro 2.16ghz had a really good display, I think it would be worth about $1799, but considering that it has a poor display, it really is overprices IMO. I mean, since when did we start paying for more less and feel good about it?
the 17" was really nice, but I couldn't get used to lugging it everywhere, not to mention the general awkwardness of handling it - and the display that would fall whenever I carried it with the display open and the back of the computer too high vis-a-vis the front (unforgivable design error IMO)
Anyway, why I like the macbook better than the MBPs:
-better overall design
-better wifi reception
-better battery life than the 15" and about the same as 17"
-arguably better display (no grain, quite even illumination, crisp)
-magnetic latch
-I actually like the keyboard better though that's a personal thing. It feels crisper and require a much more gentle touch which is good if you're working on for long periods. The MBP is nice too, but never felt as crisp.
- better size
-even if I like the feeling of the metal of he MBP, I think plastic is a more suitable material for laptops unless you go with some composite material instead.
What I don't like:
- sharp edges around - not a deal breaker, but they shouldn't be there
- poor sound quality
- ridiculously materials: black smudges like nothing I've ever seen and the white scratches like nothing I've ever seen (though luckily the scratches aren't very visible - unlike the smudges on the black one)
- I worry about the cracks that people are having. They seem to be a consequence of the design itself which means that more people will have the problem.
Otherwise, I think the macbook is a great, powerful and very nice computer to use. we're all fortunate!
