I think Apple's marketing machine is one of the best in the industry. I think there is some opportunity for them to reinforce their vision for the future when it comes to the iPad lineup, though that would only be a roadmap for their competition to pursue. I think Apple's software architects and engineers for iPadOS are in good position in where they can take iPadOS. Usually it is the hardware that limits software and in the case of iPadOS, it appears on paper there is amble room to grow into in the iPadPro lineup. I think the frustration is not knowing and perceiving what looks to be obtainable, but has not materialized. I think the same chip moniker of the M-series in both MacBooks, Macs, and iPadPros has driven some vocal minority to dream of OS convergence and now shifting into "not Mac, but better" conversations. But not realizing the major differences in application frameworks, the operating system, the components beyond that of the CPU are all different. Instead, we get the lowest forms of conspiracy of people thinking Apple is intentionally holding back or snark because they know no different.

I can see where folks are fever'ish around greater file management functionality and cleaner UX around window/tile management. And I hope Apple is adjusting where needed. But it probably also requires deeper changes into all of the applications developed for iOS and iPadOS so that the higher level UX components can be utilized. It's not like Samsung's DEX isn't without grips, complaints, and issues. Even Google is holding off on releasing any real form of an Android desktop.

In the end, it is what it is. And most complaints are just trolls, bots, and sour pickles adding no real value back to the conversation.

I have never truly understood the file management issue with the iPad. This is largely because up till now The first iPad I had was a stand alone device I otherwise had Windows PC's. Now that I am fully Apple, iOS, iPadOS, MacOS, WatchOS, TVOS I am seeing thing differently. For files I am beginning understand this issue. keeping files in the iCloud a no substitute to quickly pulling up a file folder to add to, edit, etc. With this said because I never did heavy duty office work I never got into files, spreadsheets, powerpoint, etc it was never an issue. I mainly used My PC's as a music server, 6 TB of Music and video files, For this sort of thing there are several App's available that you can directly load music files into you iPhone or iPad. My iPhone has 70 GB of music files loaded right now. What is interesting thanks to Apple Music, SoundCloud, and BandCamp those TB of music I have stashed away are no longer as important as they once were because I have better copies available from these streaming services. I think the main reason I am happy with the functionality of my new iPad is I have never liked laptops.

If you have read Science Fiction for as many decades as I have. The Smart Phone and the tablet were first written about in the 1950's. The devices imaged in these books were like an iPhone or an iPad. Presently in science fiction it is now implants. You have a super functional AI assistant and friend that resides in your body. It is sort of like an internal Batman, orderly, man servant.

Everyone has their own opinion! Just ignore what you do not agree with and move on with life!
this need to be stickied everywhere on every discussion forum.

i couldn't care less what people think about anything *I* do with *MY* money. folks just need something to do and bloggers pick up on this and flame the discussion more, just to get ad revenue and traction to their site. many of us are gullible and fall for the banana in the tailpipe and engage because they want to protect their investment or validate why they think something is not worth the purchase. i severely limit my time on these sites because of all these flame ready discussions.

I drive an electric car that gets a lot of hate due to the CEO, and new owners to this car come to the reddit forums and ask why people hate on the car.. who gives a rats behind bro--just drive the car and MoveOn.org. people gonna people...

what's weird is you go on a platform to hear other people's opinions than have issues with what kind of opinions other people can convey.

the solution is to go off the platform or curate your follows?

I’m pretty sure when Apple finally comes up with MacBook/iPad hybrid (whatever form it takes), everyone here would say that it’s the next best thing after sliced bread.

We’ve seen that with Apple Pencil, numerous iOS features, Apple Watch…

I do find some of the criticism a little silly. It’s like buying a sports car and then complaining it doesn’t fit when the engine could create enough thrust.

You know what you bought. Don’t expect it to do more.

Then there is some of the unrealistic expectations. Full MacOS on iPad ? Has Apple ever said it was coming ? With the exception of the top end high capacity iPad Pros, the RAM is a little limited (8GB). The cooling ability is limited. No active cooling and a very thin form factor mean it will get hot if the chip is pushed. It probably wouldn’t be a best user experience.

There are tablets out there running desktop OS, like the Surface Pro. I’ve got one. I try to love it, but if I’m honest it is the worst of both worlds for me. It’s a horrible tablet experience compared with iPad for me. The OS also does not suit touch still. It’s over complicated for many ‘casual‘ users who make up a huge % of ipad users. Think your parents/grandparents who were allergic to a computer but love their iPad. The iPad is a consumer device aimed at everyone including those who wouldn’t use a computer. The Surface is also heavy and uncomfortable to hold. The form factor is getting better but not there yet for me. And frankly, many great apps are missing. I use pdf markup apps daily. I’ve tried just about all of them. I have some favourites On iPad, but I’ve yet to find the right one on PC (LiquidTex comes close).

Having said all of that, can ipadOS be improved ? Yes. Can it do more ? Yes. Are there apps missing ? Yes. Why no proper equivalent of MacOS Preview for example ? Why no decent local storage for cloud saved material (ios18 adds that but so far it’s not worked properly for me in the beta. Some better multi tasking (it’s improved over the years but still could not with some work). Stage Manager is a good start but is not quite there.

So I hope they do spend some real effort on iPadOS which does often feel a poor relation to iOS. But do I want or even think the iPad needs MacOS ? No, and most people wouldn’t in my view. Some of the faux outrage seems a little much, although many on here are just asking for improvement not revolution.
I work with people whose organisation doles out Surfaces to all staff as their corporate device. Epic fail - succeeds for work on a train etc, but trying to view GIS or play with a lot of data and it goes s-l-o-w and they look enviously at our crappy HP Elitebooks.

MacOS or a Mac-like experience on iPad would tear a hole in the Mac sales, possibly. Hence a slow drip of new features coming to iPad. Spend a 699 or whatever on a future M series Air or double that for a Mac when they can do 99% of the same thing? Uh…I know what I’d buy. If that separation pisses people off, don’t buy into the orchard. Go see what’s shaking in ChromesOS or Android world. Or even MS and the afore-cursed Surface.

Having lately moved into the iPad Air tier from a workhorse iPad 8, I’m still in the rosy afterglow and enjoying the overall improvement on user experience. Space! Speed! RAM! Fewer app refreshes! A much nicer screen!

My use case is/will be music recording and iPad picking up the slack from an OCLP-ed MacBook 2009 (15 year old tech meets a 4 year old OS and largely works, except for a lot of hardware features ).

For Joe/Joanna Average, this device is arguably good enough to be their main computer, if you add a monitor, keyboard and mouse. How many users are actually saying ’my iPad sucks’? MacRumours users are not a representative group - more like a power user subset, surely?
