Of all the threads around so far i've read - i don't think it's needed. And it's been a LONG day.....

A DOA phone SHOULD be replaced at the place of purchase, not have to be shipped off for repair. I used to cell phones - i can't imagine having to send it off. Gee, that would be the axe on that sale....

Anyway, i hope they replaced it for the OP. I think they would have had it NOT been activated. But that activation - well, i think he's screwed :(

They should seriously replace it for you on the spot. I'd be really upset if they didn't.

I'd like to hear an update to this.......

I'm leaving to head over there right now. What sucked about last night was that I had an all-day appt today and only NOW am I able to finally run back to the store and handle this.

Couldn't call the store first to get the scoop, because, HELLO, my phone line has now been switched to the DOA iPhone so my old RAZR doesn't work anymore.

Cross your fingers for me! I'll fill you in on how they handle this as soon as I get home...

They have swapped a few people phones out already for dead pixels so that part should not be an issue. Availability is my only concern.

*crossing fingers*

HAPPY ENDING! And relatively painless. Walked up to the genius bar (without an appointment), and even though they were booked solid today they put me on standby for a couple minutes, then swapped the SIM card with a new model and I was outa there.

So we had a little glitch, but now I'm staring at a gorgeous and perfectly functional display, and we're back in business.

YES!

thanks guys

:D

Good for you. It's about time huh. At least they didn't make you send it in and you wait for 2 weeks. That was nice of them to just switch the SIM card for you to make it work. Now, you're problemfree with a gorgeous iPhone. Let's just say I'm green right now :D

Congrats that you finally got a working iPhone.

It's nice to see that the Geniuses worked everything okay.

That's awesome. I wonder if that would have happened at an AT&T store. I know the apple stores are MUCH better stocked and able to deal with such issues.

AT&T stores will take returns, but not exchanges:

  • You can return your iPhone or Apple-branded Bluetooth Headset within 14 days for a full refund, but there is a 10% re-stocking fee if the box has been opened. Returns must have all original equipment.
  • AT&T stores will only accept returns of iPhone and the Apple-branded Bluetooth headset if the items were purchased at an AT&T store or kiosk location. AT&T will not accept returns for items purchased at Apple stores or at Apple on-line.
  • Returns will only be accepted in AT&T Store locations (not Kiosk locations).
  • iPhones which are Dead on Arrival(DOA) will not be exchanged over the counter. There will be no manager override allowing this process. The Apple Warranty & Repair process will be followed.

...then swapped the SIM card with a new model and I was outa there.
Thanks for the ending. I started reading this thread after getting my iPhone exchanged for a different problem (cracked glass), just because I was curious, and I started getting mad at all the people spreading rumors about how you have to ship it to Apple for repair/replacement.

iPhone issues at apple store == new replacement and swapped SIM cards, ask if you can get your data deleted if you synced addressbook/contacts/music or if you have text messages or whatever you want to delete. Don't forget to take the box (I didn't and now I have to go back to give them the old box and get the new one  dumb policy). Also unless it's critical that problems be fixed ASAP, you should probably go really early when phones are in stock or just wait a week or two. I grabbed the last 8gb iPhone (for my replacement) at the store I went to, if I was there any later I wouldnt've gotten a replacement today.
