hey guys,

my warranty is almost up in less than a month and i recieved a letter from apple that tells me my warranty is about to expire.

now that i think of it, i am not sure if i should get applecare. I mean, anything that happends to my iBook can be my fault such as the harddrive dying or a dead pixel and apple could say it was my fault and they won't replace it. in addition, the guidelines say that apple does not cover wear and tear of cases, key caps, and batteries. so if my battery is low, apple will not cover it? i don't really understand what apple will cover.

anybody found applecare bad or beneficial for them and tell me what happened them you?

on a sidenote, applecare does not cover accidental damage while my friend tells me that dell does for (i think) $79.

thanks.

No, they won't cover your battery or accidental damage. I believe if your HD fries, it's covered. If the logic board goes (not uncommon) it's covered. Basically, the bits that are expensive to fix are the ones that are covered from malfunction.

Only you can decide if its worth the extra cash to you.

The system being a iBook, I dont think there is much to cover. If the system was worth a bit more, I would definately say get AppleCare.

In my opinion though, AppleCare is definately not worth it if you compare to some of the other insurance plans out there like CompUSA where they actually cover wear and tear and the screen. My friend within the first month of school this past school year, someone sat on his laptop and screwed up screen. CompUSA just fixed the screen in a weeks time, no questions asked.

From my experience with through the Geniuses at the store, you get the third degree on everything. I dont blame them because they are constantly lied to their face, but I perfer the no questions asked type of deal ;)

My hard drive died 2 years after I had my iBook and Apple repaired it under warranty with no problem, and also replaced my keyboard while they were at it (the letters were rubbed off)

I say its worth it. They usually don't argue with replacing parts. Unless its evident that you dropped it down a flight of stairs.

The conventional answer is: Yes to notebooks, No to desktops.

Of course, the iMac and Mini are more like notebooks inside, so maybe Maybe on those...

Notebooks take more abuse, and are more subject to heat problems, and are more expensive to fix (because of miniaturized, non-standard parts and built in LCDs) than a standard desktop.

couple of years ago i dropped my G3 iBook. it was a disaster, to say the least- the latch would not close properly because the hook in the bottom- near the trackpad- had broken off and was rattling around in there. so, it was taken to applecare after a week's vacation and repaired - UNDER WARRANTY. this saved me, and then thirteen (or so?) year old from having no money ever again. so i think you should get it, bascially, if you havbe the money. cheers

Take the 250 and put it toward a new Macbook for when the iBook finally goes down the road.

I got a letter a couple of days ago for my PowerBook. I've decided to pass on AppleCare. If worse comes to worse and my PB dies it's an excuse to get a new MacBook. I usually get a new computer every couple of years anyway. I think it will last another year or more.

I thought Apple doesn't cover accidental damages.

I've never bought AppleCare. And Apple techs have helped me for free, and if I added up all the parts I've bought over the years (for repairs, not mods) versus the total for AppleCare on every machine I've bought, it's about 1/10 (in favor of parts). So your call.

They will send you a replacement most times for free even without Apple Care. There have been many discussions about it on Mac on web sites-

I don't think apple care is worth it. There is a reason manufacturers and retailers sell these and push them so much- THEY MAKE MONEY ON THEM...LOTS OF IT. Best buy and other companies often pay their employees extra moneywhen they sell them with a device...K-mart, SEARS, etc all do it too. They are huge money makers. If they were not they would not do it. That being said, you wil always hear about peple saying things like Yes, I love it because my HD went out and they replaced it. However statistically speaking most people never end up using their extended warranty.

Just my opinion though

Look on eBay for AppleCare packages. You can usually find them for much much less than what Apple direct charges.

I the got AppleCare for my MBP on eBay and it only cost me $165 (compared to what.. $349 or something that Apple charges?). I called Apple to verify that the user I had bought the coverage put the AppleCare on my laptop and sure enough the CSR told me it had been added earlier that day.

IMO, $165 is a small small price to pay to cover a $3000 laptop from any faulty equipment.

Thanks, I thought I would be the only person to mention CompUSA.

I got their warranty for my older PB because they do have 1 complete LCD fix/swap out for any reason, even if it was user accidental damage. CompUSA also covers one OEM replacement battery (Apple's batteries are approximately $129USD) and that alone almost covers the cost of CompUSA's warranty.

My iBook's one year of AppleCare is almost up-- I'm debating whether or not to get the CompUSA plan for it or to just risk having no coverage.

Thank you for your replies guys.

I don't think I will get applecare anymore. I'll probably replace my iBook when i go to college.

I usually get applecare but I usually have problems with my macs. just got my powerbook back from a month of repairs out of warranty in which nearly all the parts were replaced, the mobo twice in an effort to figure out what was wrong. I mean your luck may vary but I just hope you're not back here being very mad if a repair costs $400.

Not getting AppleCare with a notebook is playing with fire in my opinion. CompUSA sounds like a great option for Americans, but in the UK, get your AppleCare for those portables, kids.

No offence or anything but your thread title is really misleading, I thought that you had got a letter from apple saying something interesting like "go away little kid we dont want your ideas" or something similar. No ambiguous thread titles they are not nice (even thought i am sure i have used them before)

So is the concensus to get CompUSA's warranty rather than Applecare? I'm going to be buying a MacBook soon and I was set on Applecare, because I've read thread that reccomend warranties, especially for laptops. I plan on swapping the RAM and the HD to a bigger one, so I guess that voids the Applecare. How much is CompUSA's warranty, and what does it cover?

Yup. I bought my PB through Apple but purchased the CompUSA warranty through them w/out a problem. They just had to do a quick lookover to make sure my laptop was in working order. :p

its nice to know things like that dont only happen to me.

My life is a big walking irony.

I'm so tired that I read that probably 11 times as I was typing it. Does it make sense to ANYONE else out there?
