Nope, but it's good advice nonetheless and since the MacRumors lot are such a sage bunch he is going to get the benefit of their wisdom whether he likes it or not! :D
You don't know his back-story, so it's really none of our business. Heh...I rate the collective wisdom of MacRumors pretty low, all things considered. I certainly would ignore any financial advice it spews.

e.g. I bought a Mac with the Barclaycard 12 mon. same-as-cash deal. I had the cash up front, which earned interest while Barclaycard didn't.

Good for you, that is a sensible use of credit. (there should be a thumbs-up smilie)
We do know the OP's back-story though, he implied it in his post. He is a student and the only way he can afford the computer is with a loan from his new credit card, i.e. he is spending money that he does not have (unlike you)

It's still not our business if OP didn't ask, but it is his error for giving the trolls something to feed on. :p

I agree - if you need to buy a computer on credit, it means you're too poor to afford one.

I don't know how some of you get on here!

Taking advantage of a no interest credit card is an excellent idea. That's like saying, "If you have to buy a house on credit, your too poor to afford on".

If you could buy a computer and pay 1699 up front cash today, or spread that payment out over 12 months, why would you ever choose the first option? If you spread it out you can take that 1699 and MAKE IT WORK FOR YOU, turn a profit on your money, and actually walk out ahead after the year. If you spend it up front on the computer it's gone.

Being a financial B.S. graduate i can tell you theres absolutely no reason why you wouldn't prefer to hold on to your money longer. It's just common economics, if you don't HAVE to pay all at once, you won't. Unless you mess up a payment, you'll pay no less in the end and you'll have had more opportunity to use that money to make MORE money, in turn giving you a discount over what you would initially pay up front.

The reason these cards get a bad wrap is because people miss a payment, lose their offer and pay interest. Stay on top of the card, always pay early (electronically is the smartest way), and you'll have spent 1699 in 12 months instead of in 1 day. Really, absolutely no reason NOT to use the card.

How did this turn into an economics classroom? I bought my 1st computer on credit and wish I never had, but I've also since purchased on credit and pay it off early and collect the points. Moral of the story? WHO GIVES A SH....!!!

Go for the CPU, pay it off and use the hell out of it.
If it helps, I used to be a salesman in my past, don't get the extended warranty. You could take that $169 and turn it into a new computer within that 1st year.

So I signed on to the apple refurb store today and low and behold there was a 27" quad core i5 2.8ghz 4gb ram and 1gb ati so I ordered it. I'm stoked for all the advice fellow mac geeks I needed it since I've been out of the mac loop since I purchased my old macbook pro.

thanks

proud soon to be imac owner parker

Congrats! You'll be very happy I'm sure. Even the lowest of the lowend 27" is a beast of a machine.

hope you left some credit on your card for apple care , it is more then advisable if you want support for more then 90 days on the phone, at least here in the uk they get very tough on that matter

Does anyone here actually use the telephone support? Fair enough if you know zero about computers and need someone to talk you through it, but I bet you'd find the answer to your problem even quicker by posting it on here! :)

So my refurb quad core i5 2.8ghz iMac came today and to my surprise it has a 2tb hard drive and it was only suppose to have 1 tb the box also says 1tb on it. So I'm pretty happy about that and I love my new 27" imac in general.

Most refurb are model that have been ordered and nobody has picked up and because re hi ally it has been sold they have to say it's second hand or refurbished.
I have a refurbished iMac and it is the exact same as a new one only £150 cheaper

One of the stupidest things thats ever been written here. and thats saying something

you hit the nail on the head... some people just dont know how to make a situation work for them. Unfortunately though some people wont have these investment ideas in their head when they work their credit.. .they just spend spend.....

but other than that this guys gonna max that card out so help him get the best of it!

Discounted Education AppleCare??

Going back to AppleCare. Do students in the US get the same massive discount on the applecare. Here we get it for about 25% full price. If it's the same there then get the plan as it gives you more options if something happens to the iMac.
