A couple items to add.

If you install Windows XP or Vista on your Bootcamp partition, while in Mac OS X you can use Parallels or VMWare to open the Bootcamp partition and use it as a virtual disk. This is kind of handy in that you only need one install of Windows to use on both sides: Mac OS via virtualization and directly using Bootcamp. This way you only need to keep one Windows install up to date.

Also if you format your Bootcamp partition as NTFS, you can use WinClone to make a backup (clone) of your Windows install. This is really handy and works well.

BTW, on the Mac side, if you decide to create a virtual computer and not use the Bootcamp partition, you can just duplicate the virtual disk image to make a backup.

When using Parallels or VMWare, you can have multiple Windows OS installs. All you need to do is select which image you want to open. This is really hand when testing new software. If for some reason the install goes bad, or you don't want to use that software, just delete the image can copy your backup and you have a fresh version of Windows to work on.

Welcome to MR! :)

Hello,
This is a new world. I have had PCs. I got a MAC PRO - day before yesterday, Everything is a default order - I can upgrade later.

I want to install Windows in order to run Windows applications while I make the software transition. I have a few questions:

1) If I put a Windows CD into the ROM will Boot Camp automatically run to 'install Windows'? If not, what is the process of install?

2) Once I make a complete transition can I wipe out Windows and all Windows programs?

I think I should go with a 32 bit version of Windows because I am not sure if I will run into a problem with my software not running in a 64 bit environment. Any comments about that are welcome.

How large should I make a partician in Boot Camp if I plan on installing quite a few programs?

Even though there is a limit on teh amount of memory you can 'see' in certain versions of windows - is physically limited from running, or is it only not visable?

Thank you,
Odisey

I would recommend that you forego Bootcamp and run Windows through a virtual machine using VMFusion (or Parallels -- I've only used Fusion, and it's been great). Then you can experience the superior Mac OS (I'm also a 20-year PC convert) and go quickly to your Windows programs without rebooting out of your Mac.

Good stuff

Forums are great for much feedback and input!

I got one of those brains - if one dot is not connected the whole thing is fuzz.

I am trying to understand all the options and I don't yet. I am getting clues.

I think the following from posts and jabbing at logical guesses:

-If I use bootcamp I partition the drive and run two machines - either MAC OS or WINs. I will have format issues and need to choose a file system and supporting software such as Paragon to create an environment that meets my needs.

-VMware and fusion are the same thing. If I go with this I can run WINs at the same time as running MAC OS. I do not know about file format issues in this environment.

-Parellels is the same as VMware - different program. I do not know about file format issues in this environment either.

I like the idea the last post gave me. I like the idea of running MAC OS and WINs at the same time, and using Windows progs as needed. What are the file format issues?

I am an instructional designer - for real. I would like to gather a few SMEs here and put together a how to starter guide for green apples. Maybe have a mod post it as a read first. I am sure dozens of these same questions are asked over and over. Search features help. They provide bits and pieces though - not the entire picture. With a complete guide posted then the forum becomes support in stead of redundant information. Maybe thre is a complete guide and I've missed it so far.

Thank you for helping me learn more. I am going to go with VMware to run both systems at same time. I have already partitioned drive though. I have not installed WINs yet. What does someone suggest? Please mention file format options - less Fat32

and this should help you decide which to get fusion or parallels

Yes, VMFusion is made by VMware. Parallels is made by another compnay.

No format issues if you forego bootcamp and run Fusion. Windows runs in its own little world, although it has access to your Mac's hardware. It has its own emulated hard drive that you control the size of, RAM that you control the size of, ports, etc. Just like it's running on a dedicated PC -- only faster. The Windows side interacts with the Mac side as if they're networked. In fact Fusion has a feature called Unity, which makes it appear almost as if your Windows programs are running in the Mac environment. Amazon is running a good price on Fusion now, with a $20 rebate.

Carry on here

I've looked at other threads - links. It looks as though VMware Fusion is prefered over Parellels by the majority.

Someone asked about large programs such as AutoCad. It was mentioned to run bootcamp and fusion. Still not connecting all dots.

Here is my situation: I am making films. I used PCs and the environment just bogs stops crashes. 4 GBs RAM and 3GHz processor and it's a waste.

So I am migrating to MAC. I have a film in final edit. There are tons of files. It is 90%ish completed in WINs XP using Adobe Premiere Pro 2.0.

I got to finish this using Adobe - I don't have 6 months to re-edit.

I want to install WINs on the MAC. Install my WINs programs - viz Adobe Premiere Pro - and the entire suite. I want file compatability between OSs - I am not sure that will happen yet.

I have three external HDs. Two 500gb drives that are NTFS and one 750gb drive that is MAC formatted. I salvaged film from a crashed WD HD to the external 750gb HD.

"Thank you MAC. MAC actually read the crashed drive and I copied the files to a new external HD. This fact alone bought the MAC PRO. I inquired for a salvage of the files - answer $500.00 to $1500. I took the drive to the university - hooked it up to a MAC there and it read it. Thought if I am going to spend $1500.00 I'm investing in a MAC! So I got it here - and I just look at it. Don't want to make a mistake setting it up right to finish this film and then move on to Final Cut Pro for new projects."

I got stuff scattered at this point! I will walk calmly out to the porch - gaze at the forest for a moment and then literally scream at the top of my lungs while pulling what's left of my hair out.

Please - someone take my hand - h e l p

Running large suits like pemiere pro i'd just go the bootcamp route, format the partition NTFS and use paragon so you can r/w between OS's and your externals

Oh and before someone else points it out it's Mac not MAC

Yes - I am getting that message. I will go with Bootcamp, format NTFS, and get Paragon to get the film done. Then I will think seriously about the next move - how to re-order the systems.

So, any lead on a reliable source, extra cheap, deliver over night software company offering WINS XP Pro? USA!

Yeah - Got it - Mac not MAC. TY

Im from the UK,but alot of the US members on this site rate newegg you also say XP pro,i'd do abit of scouting around before ordering it as it's 64bit so you may run into driver issues

Ohhhhh.... Pro is 64 Bit! I should go with 32 BIt. Home version is 32 Bit! Maybe I should do that. Any suggestions of a OS better than Home, 32 Bit, and not Vista?
