I wish Apple would start listening to its long time devoted customers and fans… i have heard very little for people who are in support of Music and thinking iTunes was not the best digital asset manager out there. I think Apple TV could be rebranded to incorporate both music and iTunes and still have the subscription services for those who wanted streaming… actually, they could incorporate arcade into that as well. Using the old Apple “Front Row” as a basis for the UI and functionlaity and idea would be a perfect redesign and think people would be thrilled. Instead of the physical hardware being called Apple TV (which is confusing since software is already using that name) it could be rebranded to be called Apple Media Center which could be the brains of it all… and let it manage and share the users digital assets with its local network users, along with having strong ties to the “HomeKit” component. Even though the software was buggy and incomplete IMHO at the time it was out, I really thought the Front Row app was brilliant and i could see it being the user interface to manage all entertainment through out the home along with managing what is accessed and where within the homes entertainment systems… where the iOS devices could have a major role in the operational aspect… (imagine an iPad mini being hung in multiple locations around the home) where it can be used to separately control a zone or individual rooms… like home theater (where ripped and imported DVD’s of yesteryear can be managed and played)… or the kitchen, where music and access to recipes and how to videos can be used… or home libraries or offices might have access to podcasts, pictures, etc…

I think if Apple did something like that, using the old Apple quality standards, along with their trademark innovation of it just working and being very user friendly, it wold be welcomed with open arms. And if memory serves me right, that was one of Steve Job’s visions, where the Mac and other intergrated Apple products would serve as a homes media center.

What is this communities thoughts on that???

Lots of variations on a theme but whatever it could be, would hopefully replace this "Music" app and other "hype" apps. I don't want a store on my computer that plays music. I want a music app that might also include access for purchases of music, tv and movies. Gee, sounds a lot like the older iTunes. - A more personable and personal experience.

Btw, as for mini iPads...nice idea. Then again, could go with a mesh system where you enter an area of the home and all the room options come to life via network.

There are a lot of ways to make the idea work where Apple could still have its “streaming” subscription services and at same time accomidate those who spent years collecting and building multi-media libraries. The point of it all being, people have cultivated their libraries of Photo’s, Videos, Music, Podcasts, etc… and iTunes was doing a better than average job in managing all those digital assets… the “Front Row” app/UI, while incomplete and still unstable, was brilliant way of seeing it all with the remote and the type of innovation we have all loved and become accustomed to coming from the Apple products… and then it all just seemed to vanish… the replacement we were left with as an option “Apple Music” subscriotion service is far from adequate, clunky and difficult to use, and leaves a whole segment of Apple users without solutions to something they once had through iTunes… and here is the kicker too… iTunes even gave people access to the store, which people were utilizing. I know I spent a significant amount just supplementing my own video and music libraries. So all I have to stay to Apple about that is WTF?

Again - I wish Apple would get back to its creative and innovative roots and listen to its most loyal of fans and user base, and bring back a new and improved iTunes that incorporates the “subscription streaming services” such as Apple TV, Music, Arcade, etc… all delivered though a newly branded hardware (former Apple TV) using the “Front Row” user interface, management/navigation concept… and yes, having access to all of this through the iOS devices, or maybe a special programmable Apple remote.

Apple, please give us back our iTunes and Front Row!

You can also try this

Dopamine Music Player

I've personally been using this on Windows and macOS on and off.
First time I came across it was on Neowin.net where the author first launched this app - albeit in a different UI packaging and different name at first..

On GitHub, expand to reveal the Preview12.dmg file by clicking the Assets text.

This is the direct link to Preview 12 DMG

Album cover art for me took a long time.. depends on many things I would imagine. I resized the window 30 seconds in and it might have woken the player up.. or could be that the player had finished looking for album art.

Check out the thumbnails for on-boarding screens. And a macOS Big Sur-style icon from yours truly.

For settings; look at the 3 horizontal lines in the toolbar on the top right. There's a few settings that you might fancy... one is to use System Titlebar and one is to invert the menu bar item(that's too big for macOS) and another is of course to hide the menu bar item all together.

Eventually it will look like this.

A long while back I tried out a program and couldn't remember the name until now. It was a software that could be used in a simple fashion or if you are more an audiophile, you got access to some really interesting controls. It does have a trial. I just downloaded it and gave it a bit of a try with multiple types of files ranging from typical iTunes download, cd ripped to lossless, downloaded quality 24/96 files etc. I added to the mix some multi-channel audio that was converted to PCM files and ALL played impressively well on my powered speakers that include their own 24/96 DAC. I have soon to try with headphones attached via audio jack to the Mac.

Anyone familiar with Audirvana? It comes in three versions with one full pay once price and then subscription services. I downloaded the "Origin" version which is the single one time payment version. This will take a bit of getting used to but save for the high price (about 100 US or so) I admit I remember why I thought it was interesting before.

Anyone else familiar with this program or give it a trial run...curious on your take.

My system for quick test - Studio Max, USB to Peachtree M24 powered speakers, USB/BlueTooth Senn PCX 550ii, and 2nd gen airpods.

Late to the party (just created acc) I use Audirvana, for local files as well as Qobuz streaming. Audiophile level technologies like upsampling and signal processing (powerful EQ). (No Apple Music streaming through Audirvana, Apple doesn't allow this feature yet) Music files local to Mac can play through Audirvana.

I have since started to enjoy using Audirvana Origin. Though the price is a bit more than some other 3rd party apps, it does exactly what I want and handles all my various audio file formats. There were a couple of other apps that I tried that too would work reasonably well - JRivers Media and Swinsian (sp). Some might find the user interface to Audirvana a bit stark and less friendly. I somewhat like how it works for the most part and got used to its layout fairly quick.

My Mac is connected via USB to powered pair of speakers that has its own DAC (24/96). I have used analogue and digital via USB. Both sound good but by using the USB connection, I get the external DAC and it is very good.
