Gone are the old days when Apple actually released products you could buy now.

Now they just are a hype machine.

It all started with that Iphone.

I really miss the days after keynote when you could just go to the store and buy it.

If it is half baked (Like the iphone, ipad, etc) than you have nothing to announce.

My point is that you don't announce anything until it passes FCC.

This super secretive KGB mentality has to go.

I am sure you realize that communications products that use public airwaves require FCC approval before they can be sold.. So there is no way Apple can "announce" them at the time they go on sale, without public finding out about them previously via FCC.

Hence, things like iPhones and iPads get announced a few months ahead of their launch.

I wish Steve Jobs would step down.

I do not like where things are going for Apple Inc.

I really miss Apple Computer.

It seems that future Apple products are going to be like an Iphone with a keyboard.

Here is Steve's thought train.

1) Computers are too complicated.
2) We need to control everything

Pretty soon Macbooks will be completely sealed with no ports just like the ipad. Who need ports?

Mac OS will be gone. Iphone OS is their future. They even say they are a mobile devices company.

Imagine a 27 inch imac with iphone OS. That is the future for Apple.

Steve do everyone a favor and resign.

Considering most other companies tend to announce new products months if not years in advance, waiting a couple of months really isn't too bad. I mean, look at say Microsoft and the new Windows 7 phones, these won't come out until the end of the year I think. Or look at Blizzard announcing their games more than half a decade before they're in stores.

We have it pretty damn good in comparison.

I would rather see Apple die as a company

Than see everything turn into giant closed ecosystems where Apple controls everything that you put on your PC.

In what world is this actually happening? You're speculating a future that CUSTOMERS WOULD NEVER LET HAPPEN.

Despite all the rumors over the years, do you really believe that Apple operates at his whim? Would his management team stay there? Would the board of directors allow it?

He may be very hands on but he has helped build a company that, I bet, shares his visions. Visions don't become reality unless you have buy in from lots of other people.

I bet if Jobs were to retire, Apple would continue to operate as it does today. There would be no flash on the iPad, no mini tower or anything else that a small subset of their market wants.

Of course, this is my opinion based on 25 years of marketing experience but no MBA. :p

Hey Johnny Come Lately, sorry but not having product at announcement isn't new. In fact, having product ready at launch or a few days later is what is new to Apple. You've just been spoiled. "Old timers" like myself easily recall the months delay between product announcement and shipping. The Cube, the Bondi G3 PM, the TiBook (good luck finding one when they did ship too), the first 13 and 17" PBs, the first MBP, etc., etc.

Was your complain thread in the iMac forum not enough? Will you be starting similar threads in any other forums?

1. apple will always have computers. they dont make the money they do by selling iphones and ipods.
2. ports are always going to be around, they will just get faster and better
3. the macbook and ipad are two completely different ideas.
4. iphone + keyboard = touchscreen imac, nothing wrong with that.
5. steve jobs is the reason apple is successful, if apple just stuck to strictly computers while the rest of the world is going mobile then apple would go under. apple comes out with the best all around products and makes them look good while doing it.
this forces other companies to come out with better products therefore making apple do the same. without jobs and apple we would be living in a windows world. which would suck ass imo.

Not only did Apple spiral down to near death when Steve left, but it came back to enormous heights with Steve back at the helm. And unquestionably Steve's focus and leadership were instrumental in coming up with the iPhone and the a host of great products - without that fanatical focus, it would have never happened... just look at the mediocrity that Dell is.

That said, Steve, like any human being is fallible. I too am troubled by the shortsighted neglect and seeming abandoning of pro apps, especially FCS. I think that's a profound mistake. Also, I feel Apple is being shortsighted in how the utilize their workforce. Instead of hiring more programmers, they prefer to pull them off from one project to finish another - like pulling them off Leopard to finish iPhone OS. That's a profound mistake. Instead, they should try to fire on all cylinders. Neglecting OS X - as it seems they've been doing - is a huge, huge mistake.

What is the upshot? Steve leaving may not be a cure - see the history. And they'd lose their focused leader who had the charisma and ability to pull off amazing products. But on the other hand, when he makes mistakes, it's terrible too.

Bottom line: there is no cure. There is no company or organization that has lasted forever, no matter how powerful. Eventually they all decline - ALL of them.

It may be, that we have to prepare for the inevitable decline of Apple. I hope that day can be delayed, but it may already be starting now. Oh well, c'est la vie.

Apple makes way more money selling Iphones and Ipods than all their macs put together.

Every generation mac has less ports not more.

Oh and it has already happened.

1) Ipod
2) Ipad

Just wait and see where things go. They all work together because they will all be identical in the future, just different form factors. Same closed ecosystem. Everything going through Apple's App store.

I'm no iPad or Apple lover, but this thread is barely "on topic" for this forum section. I vote to zap it, also.

Well for my own reasons this is going to be the last mac I own. I've already started looking around at what hardware to use for my next PC.

But there will always be a OS X partition on whatever I build.

What do you think will be the big highlight out of the 10.7 release? App Store.

iPods _$3.39 billion
iPhones_$5.58 billion
Macs_$4.45 billion
