And why would Steve stepping down reverse this trend. Apple is MUCH more than just Steve. They have an entire ecosystem of employees, company policies and a system that seems to be steamrolling down the consumer pipeline that is already in motion.

One guy leaving, even if that person is Steve, won't reverse this.

Also, while they have been pushing the iPhone, iPod & now iPad; there hasn't been any less production on the Mac OS side. We've been getting a new major update almost every year now, we have arguably the best looking, most durable & affordable notebooks Apple's ever produced. The desktop line, aside from the lack of an affordable tower, is looking great. Where's the problem? It seems like your more upset that the iPhone is the showcase now, even though nothing bad has happened to OS X.

Let's see

In its last quarter, Apple earned:

iPods _$3.39 billion
iPhones_$5.58 billion
Macs_$4.45 billion

You were saying?

Almost double selling ipods and Iphones than Macs. That is what I said. All future Macs will be giant Ipod touches in different form factors.

Mac as you know it will transform into that closed ecosystem.

And wrong about the OSX updates. They used to be every year. Now every two to three. Snow Leopard does not count. It is not a new OS release just a re-write for 64-bit.

You might not think Snow Leopard counts, however it's still a major update, regardless of what you believe.

I'm not sure where you're getting this insider information about Apple and the future Macs, but I'm going to choose to ignore it and happily get on with using Macs. I don't really care whether you use them or not and what you think of them, I'll carry on regardless and that's all that matters to me.

Shame he's now in time out. This was kinda interesting.

Just wait and see where things go. They all work together because they will all be identical in the future, just different form factors. Same closed ecosystem. Everything going through Apple's App store.

I'll worry about this happening when one of the following happens:

1. Xcode is ported to the iPad, or Linux, or Windows.

2. Developers can create iPhone and iPad apps for the App Store using nothing but web-apps hosted only on an Apple website.

3. Apple manages to cram a Xserve into a pocket-size case.

Until then, remember where those iPhone and iPad apps come from: Macs.

Gone are the old days when Apple actually released products you could buy now.

Now they just are a hype machine.

It all started with that Iphone.

I really miss the days after keynote when you could just go to the store and buy it.

If it is half baked (Like the iphone, ipad, etc) than you have nothing to announce.

My point is that you don't announce anything until it passes FCC.

This super secretive KGB mentality has to go.

This is nonsense.

Apple is selling more Macintosh computers now than they ever were before when they were just a “computer company.”

If anything, the iPod and iPhone division are subsidizing the Mac division. They made up something like 70+ percent of Apple’s net income this past quarter.

Get over it.

And wrong about the OSX updates. They used to be every year. Now every two to three. Snow Leopard does not count. It is not a new OS release just a re-write for 64-bit.

Too bad you weren’t around for 10.1 Puma, 10.2 Jaguar or really even 10.3 Panther. They were all similar to 10.6 Snow Leopard in that they weren’t filled with 300+ features. Apple didn’t start the feature creep marketing blitz until really 10.4 Tiger.

I do wish Apple would start concentrating on their computers more though, and do more rapid update cycles for when better hardware comes out..

They're still selling Core 2 Duo MacBook Pro's, with little whispers of Core i3/i5/i7 models coming out.

You know anyone would think that Steve Jobs had a gun to the OP's head, and forced him to buy. Or alternatively Macs were the only computers that a person could buy, and that there were no other alternatives. If you don't like the direction that Apple are going in, (not that I think that you are right about macs using iPhone OS) don't buy their products. Plus I think that after Apple's biggest quarter ever, in a recession, I'm actually prepared to put money on them not sacking Steve.

Yes I know but prepare for a massive Apple stock selloff upon news of his retirement. And as a side note, it wouldn't surprise me to see Apple roll out a mid tower within a few years after Mr. Job's departure.

I am in two minds about it.
Apple could go two ways, they could be amazing or they could turn to crap. I am unsure which direction they are heading in, only time will tell. I just hope Jobs still has "it".

I mean, Apple could implament the iPhone OS onto Mac's with it's horrid App Store, a lack of ports and no flash and java. And that would be that, I'd be back on Windows and Ubuntu Linux, after a very short, but enjoyable stay in MacLand.

Alternatively OS X 10.7 could be just the thing to totally show up Windows 7, HTML5 could really take over flash or flash just get's better and the next iPhone/iPad update allows multitasking.

Only time will tell.

I do not like where things are going for Apple Inc.

I really miss Apple Computer.

It seems that future Apple products are going to be like an Iphone with a keyboard.

Here is Steve's thought train.

1) Computers are too complicated.
2) We need to control everything

Pretty soon Macbooks will be completely sealed with no ports just like the ipad. Who need ports?

Mac OS will be gone. Iphone OS is their future. They even say they are a mobile devices company.

Imagine a 27 inch imac with iphone OS. That is the future for Apple.

Steve do everyone a favor and resign.

You are definitely not thinking differently.

What makes you think in the future ports will be needed? did you think the same when the floppy disk was removed?

What do you mean by a 27" imac with an iPhone OS?

How do you know what Steve and Apple are thinking?

Sense. You're not making any.

+1 I hate to say it it the announcement..and then not shipping for a month or more is not new...and it won't change. This really is a useless thread started by someone who hasn't thought about previous releases. Oh well, to each their own.

Hey Johnny Come Lately, sorry but not having product at announcement isn't new. In fact, having product ready at launch or a few days later is what is new to Apple. You've just been spoiled. "Old timers" like myself easily recall the months delay between product announcement and shipping. The Cube, the Bondi G3 PM, the TiBook (good luck finding one when they did ship too), the first 13 and 17" PBs, the first MBP, etc., etc.

When you realize that these devices, plus iTunes, not only saved Apple after a huge slowdown and fear of overinflated stock after the iMac/iBook surge and tanking the share to $14 dollars, Apple had to do something.

They are a business and not just an iMac, Powermac, and OS X company anymore as many of my PC friends used to see Apple as. Now at least they totally respect Apple and while most still stay on PCs, they have an iPhone, iPod, or both. Some had stopped buying CDs and give generously from their paychekcs to iTunes.

Apple went from boutique to mainstream with iPod, iPhone, and iTunes.
