Forced? And while there are some changes that don't seem to have much to them, there are certainly all kinds of others that do in one way or another.

It’s actually easier now in my opinion. Just click the button and you have access to your photos. One less click than before. 
You had quick access to your photos as well as a mini camera with a single tap of the camera icon without having to have a whole extra row of unnecessary things taking up more screen real estate. Doesn't seem like there are less taps, but certainly less available now without the mini camera and the need to enable the apps drawer to get to the photos button.It’s actually easier now in my opinion. I guess overall it just took me one time to figure out the new way and have enjoyed it since. I don’t even really think about it.
And that's certainly fine. But it's not somehow easier/faster than before, and in a sense takes away some things too.
I just hate having that row of apps visible at all times, so I close it every time.

Lol totally off topic. I have a weird bug where my screen flickers when I go back to my home screen.
The simple fix is swap the camera icon with the photos one. Because most people use the photos to grab than to take pictures from within the app. It's a bit silly.
The way it was in iOS 11 was really the better way where the camera icon gave you both a (mini) camera and photos to quickly select.

Not to corrupt this thread. I posted about it on the main iOS 12 thread. But I’m going to factory reset tonight and see if it takes care of it.
Not forced on us, forced out by Apple. They’re committed to an annual upgrade cycle so they “have to” crank out something.
Good idea. I've personally never taken a photo from within the app.
I wonder what the user stats would be on how often it happens vs. inserting from the camera roll.

OT, but I have an XS and I've been having the same issue since I got it.
