I was sending my dual 2ghz powermac G5 to my family in St. Louis from Miami where I currently live. I had thrown away the box that it had orriginally came in. I called Applecare and asked if I could buy another box, and when denied, I asked how to ship it. The advised me to pack it with A LOT of bubble wrap, and ship it from a major shipper like Fedex or UPS in a sturdy box. I bought $35 of bubble wrap, and wrapped all of it around the G5. I then wrapped a blanket around it, and packed all of this in a giant box that Fedex ships toner in(a brand new box). I then shipped this via UPS 3 Day Ground, insuring it for $1000 "just in case"
I received my G5 yesterday. The box looked like it had been thrown around and dropped mulitple times. There were holes in one of the corners(where there had previously been multiple layers of packing tape) and it looked like it had water damage. I was still fine because I assumed that because I had packed eveything so well, it would be fine. When I removed the blankets and opened the bubble wrap, the bottom of my G5 was crushed. The handles on the bottom were smashed in. It looked like the handles had taken all the damage, so while I wasn't exactly pleased, at least I could still use the computer.
I opened the side just to check if there was any internal damage before i turned it on anyways. Sure enough, things were in places that they weren't supposed to be in.(I'm not technologically knowledgable enough to say what)
I went to the apple store with it before I turned it on. They said that it voided my apple care since the computer had been physically damaged, and gave me an estimate for the parts for the repairs- $2799. They as well recommended that I don't plug it in until they look at it.
Any advice from anyone? My next step is to call UPS. Has anyone got any experience dealing with them?
