In the first few months when there is a new device, any replacements will be brand new. At least that's what they gave me for my 3-4 months old Xs Max when it got cellular issues. I didn't get it in a retail box, but I knew it was brand new rather than refurbished because I checked the serial number.

But Apple refurbs are 100% like brand new, I don't get what your concern over this is. And your phone has been used. Let's say you have scratches, dents and etc (I don't say you do) and you expect a brand new looking phone? Well, actually you're getting one from Apple anyway. The quality of their refurbs is unmatched.

I get your point. I handed them my dead phone in a pristine condition actually, kept it in a case since day 1 of owning it. Babied that bad boy yet it decided to depart me lol. If yours didn’t come in a retail box, what’d it come in? a replacement box but the serial number was that of retail/new ones?

It came in a white box, just the perfect size to fit the phone, and the phone itself had it's factory protectors (regardless if brand new or refurbished) and was in a bubble wrap. The serial number can't be the same, it was different, but there's a way to check it yourself.

In Settings > General > About > Model Number:
  • M – Brand new device, meaning the device was purchased new
  • F – Refurbished device, meaning the device has been through refurbishing process
  • N – Replacement device, meaning the originally bought device was replaced by this model likely due to a service request
  • P – Personalized device with engraving, meaning the device was customized with an engraving on purchase

My replacement device starts with M, so did my first one when I got it.

Yours actually can start with N, since it's not bought from the Apple Refurb Store but is a replacement device. My replacement 6s starts with N.

*and I actually messed up on my first post. I said serial number, but it's actually the model number.

Oh yeah that’s what I meant by serial number, the initial letters you just posted. Yeah I’ve heard about people getting replacement phones starting with M in tiny white phone-only boxes! I hope I get an M one haha. I won’t mind if it’s an N after all. I’ll just accept it.

In my opinion, I think it's safer if it's not M, because refurbished/replacement devices are usually tested additionally by Apple so that the original issue or any others don't exist, so in general it's just safer to assume you won't have issues with it.

You just convinced me. Lol you’re right. Thanks for this valuable info!

Thank you. “All they really need to do is give a new battery” It gets a new battery along the new casing and display right?

Thanks again, you’ve been of great help.
Yes. New battery, case, screen and a 90 day warranty (or your current warranty whatever is longer).

I always buy refurbished if I can get what I want for the reasons mentioned before. I’ve never had a refurbished product that wasn’t as-new in appearance, function, and warranty. As stated, only a fraction of new production gets tested, refurbished devices get more testing.

You will be fine.
