I have _almost_ changed my mind. First I was sure that I would buy the iPad, now I am not.

To me, the iPad seems very nice. It owns on iPhone OS, and iPhone OS has proven its self already with the iPhone and iPod Touch. It has tons of (free) apps and it has a great browser, it's a great video player and even the music seems great with the iTunes style layout. Than there's still a great photo app, which I really like and of course mailing. Than there are some other apps like maps, notes, iBooks etc. which are great too.

I can see my self using it, even though I can do all the same things on my laptop (except for the fact that my laptop is really slow even though it's has a 2.* ghz processor and watching movies on my laptop isn't really nice). The fact is that I really like multitouch screens like Apple's iPhone and iPad. The iPad is a great way to do all your computer stuff with fun. You literally hold the internet in your hands with the iPad. I can even see my self making presentations and documents on the iPad, because it's fun to do.

So in short: the iPad is great and fun to use. But now here is the problem.

I've already got a computer + laptop which can do the same as the iPad (except for the multitouch-screen part). And to be honest, $499 for the cheapest model is expensive. And I want at least 32 GB or maybe even 64 GB, so up goes the price.

With $599 or $699 I can do a lot. I can buy a Full HD flatscreen tv starting from 1 meter (I don't know how much 1 meter is in inches but it's fairly big) and I can still keep some money over. Now I already have a HD tv, but I also have a PS3 and I also really like gaming. And in the upcoming months a lot of great games will be released (like Red Dead Redemption). I can buy these games, have a lot of fun with them, and still save hundreds of dollars.

The iPad is just too expensive (even though it's cheap for Apple) and it's not something I really need: I have lived without it for whole my life. You can just do so much with the money you have and you don't need the iPad. Next to that you will probably have a computer already which can do the same things.

So I've kinda changed my mind, but I'm still hesitating a little bit. What if I die in two months in a car crash? I could have had a lot of fun with the iPad, but than again: I also could have had a lot of fun with the games (which I bought instead of the iPad).

Questions, questions, questions...
 
In your case then, I would just wait for the 2nd or even 3rd generation iPad which will probably do soooo much more and make for a much richer experience than your now computer or laptop.
 
You know if you die in the next month you can still be buried with your ipad.
try and do that with a flatscreen TV! :p
 
Nobody needs the ipad it more of a want then a need. i would go with the ipad over ps3 games because games don't hold any resale vaule. in a years time the ipad will still get you 200-300 bucks. the games 10-15 and a hdtv nothing most people will just go get a new one.
 
The iPad isn't for everyone. It really doesn't do anything a computer cant, it just makes them easier and more enjoyable to do. I don't care what anyone thinks or says, I'm going to be in line April 3rd when the doors open.

Agreed. You're getting one, no matter how much you are in denial about it.


Why don't you just go to the Apple store and play with the unit and see if you want it or not. Maybe wait till one of your family member or friend get one to play with as well?

I suggest you start convincing other people to get one so that you can play with it. :)
 
Already having a computer is not a reason to not get an ipad as the ipad is not a replacement. However you may find you wont use your other computers as much.

Fyi im on the couch right now with the iphone. Would much rather the bigger screen for this.

It's the perfect weekender's device too. People who work in IT or someplace where they work with computers all the time would probably enjoy using iPad on the weekend while watching TV in the living room or the beach. :)

I'm in the same situation except make computer and laptop both plural.

Here is the thing though.

a laptop can do what an iPad can. As a computer can do what a laptop can, other then the portable aspect.

I look at iPad more as a space saver.

I got a new plasma tv a couple months ago. There were deals on dlp tv's as well. Plasma I have hanging up in my living room on the wall. dlp would've needed to sit on the floor.

iPad to be short I can use as I do my iPhone. Anything intensive I need to do is getting done on my desktop. Not even my laptop unless I was away. Really just depends on what you need it for.

I'm still not certain when I'm getting the iPad, but I do thinking I'm leaning more towards getting one then before.
 
I was in the same boat as you: I got a desktop and a new laptop. ipad does not do anything new/extra and rather limited but it does well with 90% of my laptop usage.

so ipad is more of a want than need. so to make it an easier decision. I sold my laptop. all power-hungry apps can be done on my desktop. then ipad becomes a need.


there you go: sell your laptop and buy a ipad.
 
I feel exactly the opposite. Had no need or want for ipad. Then the power went out. Then I got addicted to this web site. I would love to have a little device to carry around the house and use for email and the net. The iphone will be great but I want a bigger screen. No need for the power of a laptop or even a netbook so..... I think I want an ipad!
 
You know, an iPad would help your grammar issues. The auto-correct feature would have prevented your "than" "then" mistakes. So for the sake of this forum, don't change your mind. Buy one.

It will only check if you type words correctly. "Than" and "then" are both words and are therefor both correct according to most auto-correct systems. And I'm sorry for the than/then issue if that bothers you.
 
I just bought a new laptop 1 yr ago....but my wife is using it so much for online activities (facebook) that she keeps on logging me off websites we both use. The desktop is not seeing much use anymore (bought it 5 years ago) and I don't want to another laptop.

So I decided on the iPad and it will be all mine and we can share the laptop in harmony again.

So the apps, battery life and multiple use of it and what I need. If I do purchase a new laptop, likely a Macbook Pro. The iPad is the first Apple product I have bought, but not necessarily used.

Why, each one does basically the same thing, right?

Some things are not about whether there is overlap in features, it is about size, ease of use, style, etc. Since we are talking about a want not a need then it becomes a matter of personal preference (what tech gear you believe fits your need) and a matter of what you are willing to pay for (is there enough value for the price).

One pair of shoes, ten pair of shoes --- your decision --- no one else pays for them or plays with them but you.

I own one pair of shoes, but that's just because I have to change them every month because of growth and they are whacked after these three months.

I want it, but there's so much I can do with the money. I also want some awesome new games, or a new even flatter Full HD tv.
 
But do you need strangers on the Internet to validate your decision one way or the other?
 
I would look weird reading ebooks on my laptop while I am riding the subway. Especially since I can never find a seat and have to stand. (I see people doing this with their Kindles)

You'll need power for your Wifi Router. Get a battery backup for the router or buy the 3G model and pray the cell towers don't lose power too. ;)
 
here's the simple answer. If you don't have a need for it, and want to get a laptop. Get a laptop for 599. If the iPad is overpriced, im sure youcan find something within your budget. simple.
