You don't need any of that stuff. You don't need a playstation, you don't need a flat screen TV, you don't need a computer or the internet...

All you really need is food, water and shelter.

I find it really amazing that anyone would think that buying an iPad is a matter of need. People who feel that way should go live off-the-grid far from civilization for at least 6 months and get in touch with reality.

And when you get back, buy an iPad if you want one.

I was out of town this weekend. I longed for my ipad.

my hotel room had marginal wifi, I could have used being able to look at a huge stack of PDFs and possibly/hopefully annotate them. A laptop would haven't have worked in the class (I know this because mine stayed in the van!).

It was just what I needed to lighten my bag too.

I guess I will spend the wait organizing the PDFs I need on it! Lol!!

But hey, if you can see a use for it, then skip it for now!

I'd gladly trade food and water for a iPad early. I'll keep the iPad and the whiskey.

It will only check if you type words correctly. "Than" and "then" are both words and are therefor both correct according to most auto-correct systems. And I'm sorry for the than/then issue if that bothers you.

Haha, it would have corrected that mistake.

Yeah Julius, and you don't need to comment here, yet you keep on doing it.

Seriously though, some people require these tools called computers because they have to do actual work to make money to pay for food, water, and shelter. I need a computer for college classes because I need to write papers because I need to get a good grade because I need to graduate because I need a job because I need food, water, and shelter for my wife and family. I understand that you are over 2000 years old, but do try to keep up.

Reality is the state of things as they actually exist. How would removing myself from my everyday existence somehow bring more truth to the fact that I still have bills to pay for? You sound like some sort of crazy hippie, which is fine if that's your thing. I just have no idea why you're on an Apple forum trying to sound like you've reached some higher level of enlightenment.

I have a laptop too, but will still get an iPad. The laptop is not ideal for reading books in bed (or... other places where one may or may not read a book :D), it's not something I can easily grab and walk out the door with...

I always have my iPhone charger at work, therefore I'll also always have an iPad charger. It will be so much easier than lugging my bulky laptop around in a bag. I mostly use my laptop for surfing the web. I'd say 80% of the use of my laptop is surfing, paying internet bills... almost everything that can be accomplished on the iPad.

The iPad will definitely not be for everyone, but what is? I'm sure some will be happy with only a laptop, or a netbook, or only a desktop, or a combination of any or all of these. But Apple is smart to market the iPad as something in between a laptop and smartphone, because that's precisely what I'll use mine for. 8 or 9 times out of 10, I'll use my iPad, and every once in awhile I'll use my laptop if I'm going to be converting video, audio or whatever other use I'll have for it.

Same here!

I use my iPhone all the time! Literately! I know that I would use the iPad for interneting a lot, gaming, pay bills, etc. I will use my laptop once a while for updates on the iPhone,iPad, and serious gaming. I got ps3, xbox 360, nintendo wii, psp, ds, etc. iPad can serve an unique type of gaming you cannot find on laptop, desktop, or ps3 types. So, if you are into gaming, buy the iPad.

With $599 or $699 I can do a lot.

If you are not flush with cash then your thinking is dead-on correct. For the most part the iPad is a luxury product. (That is not to say its not a useful one, just that its not a necessity. A nicety, maybe, but not a necessity).

Yeah, my iPhone battery time is going to go way up after I get my iPad. I use it to surf all the time at home. I'll be sitting in the living room with my wife, and I'll say something like "Why can't this screen be bigger?" The iPad will be very nice. I'm getting really excited. I also game on my iPhone about as much as my 360, and buy a lot more games for it. Indie developers making truly unique games. It is a magical thing. One might even call it an ideal gaming ecosystem. With the iPad, I only expect this to get better. My thumbs won't be covering as much of the screen for one!

I occasionally find myself thinking that I really shouldn't buy the iPad as I would be paying money to make my MBP and iPhone, which I paid (still do pay) money for, redundant. But then I just look at all the iPad videos and all those crazy thoughts goes away. I t

It is a magical thing.
Hello Steve ;)

Reality? Look at the world... from the sound of your post, it sounds like you're well within the top 0.1% of income earners. Billions of people in the world are born into very dire circumstances, and can't even fathom a need for something like an iPad. I can almost guarantee you don't need almost all the stuff you have (and the bills that come with them). Get some perspective.

I have no problem with people wanting to get an iPad, I'm getting one myself. But, it's because I want one. If you've worked hard to get where you are, and want to reward yourself with something like an iPad, I have no problem with that. I'm excited about the iPad launch, and I think it'll be a really interesting platform, and game-changing in many ways... but it's just a piece of technology. When I see posts from people who think they need some piece of technology to survive or be fulfilled, it strikes a chord with me.

I pre-ordered mine on the first day to make sure I got in line until I decided for sure if I want the iPad or not. I am still not sure, but am leaning toward canceling the order and waiting for the reviews and possible an update. I think that my primary use for the iPad would be internet surfing on the couch, and it would be be great for that but I still have reservations about the lack of flash (I know, people are getting tired of hearing that). I have Click2Flash on my Macs, and to test this out I have been taking note of website that I visit that require or heavily rely on flash for what I want to do. My experience over the last 2 weeks has been that *for me* the lack of flash would be a killer and would make the iPad much less useful; this is not to say that everyone will have the same needs. I would use the iPad to a lesser extent as an ebook reader, but I have Kindle2 for that and I doubt that an iPad will ever replace it for me.

Perhaps I will wait for April 3rd and play with it in the store, and take my unopened unit back if I decide not to keep it.

Did you ever think that by pre-ordering something that you might not even keep, you're keeping someone who needs it from getting it? My god, man, think of the children! ;)

Well, decided not to buy the iPad this year unless I suddenly earn a lot more money (like this week I earned more than 50% than normally would be the case) or when the European iPad prices are lower than expected.

Now I'm going for some games, which I can play all throughout the year and from which I can have fun of for hundreds of hours. The iPad would have been fun too, but I currently have an iPhone which still does what it needs to do. And as I mentioned before: if I suddenly earn more money than expected, or when the iPad price is going to be lower than expected in Europe I still might by it.

Without a doubt the iPad will be fun, but I also want some new games and I've already got a sort of mini iPad: the iPhone.

And if I buy the iPad like next year, there will probably be some price drops of the current generation and the 2nd. gen will get the current price. And don't forget the fact of all the iPad apps. There will be much more _QUALITY_ apps with the 2nd generation than now: just because almost no one has had their hands on the iPad.

I am so stupid. After buying a few games - (with, now I'm mentioning it) a total discount of about 35 euros - I realised I can't just say "no" to the iPad.

I just realised how awesome it would be to create documents on a device with a touchscreen! Or how nice it would be to watch a video in the car, or listen music in the iTunes-like app. Not to mention the eBooks you can read on it (although I'm not a big fan, at all, of reading) which is done so incredibly amazing.

And I was just watching YouTube and it isn't really fun on the laptop (also because it doesn't work very smoothly on it). YouTube even works better on my iPhone, then on my laptop.

Now the question is how I get some extra money (as I have almost spend 100 euros on a few games (although I will enjoy the games, haha)).

I don't make really much money (as I am not 18 yet and there are a lot of rules about what I can and can not do). Every month I earn at least 85 euros (currently about $115), which can go up to over a hundres euros (currently about $135).

So this week or next week I get a new bank statement which shows me the total money I've got an my account. I guess about 200 euros. April + 85, may +85, june +85. That's 455 euros, and that's just the 'worse case scenario' (next to getting fired and earning nothing at all :p). If it's going to be 100 euros every month, than I will have 500 euros by the end of june. My birthday is in june so I expect I get some money (people usually give money with my birthday :p) so that's nice too.

I guess the iPad won't go for sale over here until between begin may and begin june. So that's nice. Maybe I can even make a deal with my parents that they will pay the last bit of the price of the iPad, or that they want to pay at forehand until I've got the money in june. Or I can just make a deal with them that they pay the accessoires as a birthday present (a).

But wow, it's getting a bit personal and you guys aren't - I assume - interested at all. So maybe, after all, I will still get the iPad.

I'm thinking it could be a very nice supplement to my iPhone and iMac since I do not own a laptop--but I'll wait a bit before I decide.

Well, I was holding out to just go down on launch day, check one out, then decide which one I wanted to take home since so many were swearing they wouldn't buy one. Now, I bet everyone will buy one, so I just preordered. :D

You just can't trust tech-junkies no matter what they say.:p

Lol. Have fun with your iPad, I still have to wait for the international launch :p

I just bought a new laptop 1 yr ago....but my wife is using it so much for online activities (facebook) that she keeps on logging me off websites we both use. The desktop is not seeing much use anymore (bought it 5 years ago) and I don't want to another laptop.

So I decided on the iPad and it will be all mine and we can share the laptop in harmony again.

So the apps, battery life and multiple use of it and what I need. If I do purchase a new laptop, likely a Macbook Pro. The iPad is the first Apple product I have bought, but not necessarily used.

I had the same problem with my hubby so we split it, he has his bookmarks etc on Safari & I have mine on Firefox! Noone needs to be signed out!!

Multiple user accounts with fast user switching - with or without a password??

The Mac makes this sooooo easy I don't know why you wouldn't use it!

Well we use that also now but originally we just shared the same desktop on the imac coz thats where the main itunes library was!! Now its on everything!!

Whoa, whoa... alright. Point taken.

But there are degrees of need. What you're talking about is absolute in extremis desperation. By my understanding, you've never in your life used the verb "need" in relation to yourself, because you weren't born into crippling poverty.

I'm not saying that you don't have a point; but don't overdo it, mate.

Life is unfair. It's very bad, but you can't do anything about it... unfortunately :(
