In case you refuse to read it:
Every video thing on mac from apple uses quicktime, so that's itunes, front row, preview, final cut pro, iMovie and probably some more programs.
So when you use VLC it does not effect quicktime. VLC installed doesn't mean quicktime will read the format/video.
What to do? Quicktime needs the right codecs. So what you could do 1) install Divx, but I didn't do that cause you get the divx player also and I don't want that and the codec is bad, it doesn't always work. So you should do option 2) install perian from www.perian.org (as I said before).
Now quicktime can read the movie. Because quicktime can read the movie itunes, front row, preview etc etc will be able to read it as well. Because they need quicktime.
