As the subject states, I have no idea which 3G to order. I was planning on getting just a 16GB unit for two reasons...

First, I have no idea why I am buying an iPad short of having a new toy to play with. I'm a tech geek. I'll buy things to take apart, hack, flash, and when I'm done I lose interest. Maybe I'll find something cool to use it for, but who knows. So with that said, I don't have any idea how much storage I'll need. Right now, my 32GB iPhone has 18 GB free. Does this translate in any way to what size iPad I'd need? No idea. Why would I put my music on the iPad? I travel 2-3x a year, not much movie use. Primarily I can use it at work for web browsing and IM as to not use work resources for personal use, but that doesn't require storage.

Second, I'd probably use it for a year since I'll either not find a use for it and keep it in a drawer or give it away, or I WILL find a use for it and want next year's better iPad. :)

Then I spoke to a trusted technology peer at work for advice as he got one. He tends to provide another angle and he didn't let me down about the iPad. I was thinking the base model always gets dropped and would suck for resale (I'm too lazy to deal with shady people on CL, so resale is more of a mental justification). 16 or 32? He said '64'. Apps will be bigger, I'll want to put more stuff on it (couldn't define what that stuff is...but nonetheless).

So here I sit with a 32 and 64 in the cart ready to pre-order. Since people will ask, yes, I can afford the 64, but that doesn't mean I just buy 'the best' blindly. Pushing $900 after tax for something I'm sure what I'd use it for outside of web browsing during lunch at work seems a bit excessive.

What would you do? What would I use this for?

^^^^^
Totally agree.

Pushing $900 feels tight? How about pushing $800? Does that make much difference? You know what to do depending on how you answered it.

I'm in the UK and wondering the same thing....but I'm 95% sure I'm going to go for 64Gb now.

It really depends upon how you plan to use it.

I don't use mine as an iPod.

I do keep a bunch of movies on it.

I mostly use it as a thin Internet client.

If you aren't going to load it up with tons of music and video, get the 16.

I was having the same issue. Not until I actually bought it had I decided. In the end I had a bit of help from eBay as I live in Australia and didn't have the option to walk into an Apple store. I found the 16Gb and 32Gb models were being sold at only around $100 - $50 less than the 64Gb. So to quadruple my memory on the device for only $100 was a no brained for me. Whether I use it or not it's there for if I want it.

I think Apple priced it perfectly in that they make you think it's only $100 to double the memory, and then you talk yourself into doubling it again for only another $100. Thats marketing for you...

I bought the 32GB. My thought is if I do love this thing as much as people say I will then upon next release I'd get a new one, likely with more features, and at that time I'd increase the size.

32GB for me is nice because when I travel I struggle with a 16GB iPhone. I don't need all the movies I put on there but I like choice. The iPad will likely suffer the same fate so I went with the 32GB. The 64GB to me seemed like overkill. Also, like you (OP), I thought the 16GB may get dropped next year making it difficult to resell for a fair sum. I could be wrong and all models could be difficult to resell in a year. I also foresee price drops, at least in a year, and that would hinder resale value as well. I look at the iPad as an Apple TV, I paid $329 for mine and sold it fro $250, which was really a huge bucket of luck. Thank goodness for unsuspecting eBay buyers. The iPad could suffer a 25% decrease in resale value or more in 1 year. Who knows?

Get a 64GB model. The next iteration of the iPad will see the 16GB model dropped. Remember the top of the line unit today will become the entry point one of tomorrow.

It just depends on how you'll use it. If you put a ton of music/movies/files on it then get 64 GB. If you'll do some then do 32 GB. I was originally set on 16 GB and then had a last second change of heart. I got the 32 GB to allow me to have extra space if needed in the future. I think you'll use up the 16 GB unless you don't put anything on it at all.

There is no 16. There is only 32 or 64, starting at 599 bucks.

Thats the way i think. So im debating 32 or 64. Its less than u think, my memory card for my camera is 16 GB wich i easily fill up with HD video on a vacation, then i want to transfer it to my ipad in the hotelroom.

Yes there is 16 gb for those of us who couldn't afford 32/64 iPads! I love my 16 gb and love Air Video which saves me on storage space.

Anyway, OP, count your blessings you CAN afford the 64 gb iPad! If you feel you will go hog wild filling it up with media and apps then go for it, if you won't go that far then 32 gb will be a happy medium. Go for the one that will fit your present and future needs.

I was syncing items to my Wifes 16GB iPad last night, whcih I get to use until the 64GB 3G gets here and it was painful. She does not care about video and all the documents I like to have.. I had a hard time selecting what I wanted on the device...

32 is better
64 has a lot more options for lots of things...

I convinced myself to get the 64 GB model because 64 GB is 4 times more storage space than the 16 GB for 1.4 times the price. 4 times is greater than 1.4 times, so it made sense to get the largest model. I know, the analogy falls apart when you realize that memory is only a fraction of the cost of the entire unit, and because Apple is actually making gobs more money on the premium models.... but hey, I've already filled up my 16 GB WIFI model, so I'll probably actually USE the 64 GB on the 3G model I have preordered.

I was going to order a 16G for the same reason - it's a toy, I don't know how much I'll REALLY use it once the novelty wears off, plus it's cheaper. But I decided to go with the 32G at the last minute to match the size of my iPhone.

That way I can have the exact same media or whatever in both devices without having to decide if a file should not go into the iPad because of the size I got.

Don't know if this helps, but I switched from 32 to 64gb. It was an extra hundred, and I probably didn't need it, but it kept me from going through the very mental gymnastics that you're going through. If you can do it, go for 64gb. At the very least, I would urge you to go 32gb. 16 is going to make you feel boxed in.

Good stuff. I think the same way.

64gb on my Buy List but I'm tempted to wait for the 128gb model. Will probably stick with wi-fi model regardless.

I ordered the 3G 64GB just in case. I also ordered an AirStash for any extra media I may want to share. That way I can't run out of storage no matter what.
