Well... it was a sad day today.

In the middle of a job troubleshooting a server using my Air to surf the web for Technet articles, my Air froze up.

The only thing I could do was power down the hard way - hold down the power button for several seconds.

When I tried to reboot it bonged, then sat gray for a while and flashed the dreaded blinking folder with the question mark. My Runcore 128 would no longer boot :(

Sadly, I could get nothing more for about an hour. Then, after repeated attempts to clear the SMC (per the Apple Support site) holding down Shift-ctrl-option and the power button until led flash, I finally got it to boot... for about twenty minutes. During that time it ran VERY slow. Anything that required HD access went painful. Also, per iStat menus, it ran quite hot - upper 70's C. Weird.

I tried to get a last Time Machine Backup but, alas, no love for me. It acted like it was doing it, then it stopped, then it froze again and no more booting.

<sigh>

Anyway, I installed my stock Samsung 128 SSD back in the Air, booted to the Snow Leopard CD and restored my Time Machine backup from last week. It took about three hours over the wifi.

Obviously, I'm back up and running now and all seems to be fine and my temps are back to normal. But I am very disappointed with the Runcore. Less than a year and it failed. Also, I'm one of the ones that has had the constant freezes after letting my Air sleep so maybe it always had problems.

Anyway, does anybody know Runcore's return/replacement policy. I will look it up tomorrow (er later today actually) morning. For now, I am at least back up and running.

Oh well, off to bed now. Night all.

Sorry to hear this.

The good news is Apple has seriously improved the drivers for the stock SSD over the last year. The MBA and its stock SSD are faster than ever. It is almost competitive with Runcore now.

With a new MBA surely around the corner, might as well live with it unless you get a new Runcore by RMA. I hope they will do something for you.

Also, I know there is a third-party solution coming soon with a 256 GB SSD that will fit in MBA v 2,1. Hopefully the 3,1 uses a new SATA-III drive controller and faster SSD yet. So I don't really want the 256 GB solution to work in the next MBA.

Good luck with the Runcore return. That is too much to lose for such an investment. I am sure they will work with you. Especially if you can get Matt contacted here.

Problems with runcore

I have the same problem with the runcore ssd. I got mine in February. Really loved it, very fast. Felt like a new computer. Until a week ago. No the MBA freezes constantly, wont boot or only after the 8th or 9th try in safe modus. :eek:Does anyone know about the warranty of the runcore ssd and whom to contact? Thanks.

I sent a support message to RunCore from their site, but I have not heard anything yet. When I get time during the day, I may try actually calling them.

Anyway, at least I still had my old Samsung.

It is dead

Now the SSD died. The disk utility does not find it anymore. Emailed Mydigitaldiscount for a replacement. It is only seven months old. The worst is to have to go back to the original hard drive. Feels like a slow moving train - but at least it works.

Runcore 128 freeze up

Same story here, Runcore 128 freeze up randomly during the day, impossible to trust the system. Just returned for a replacement and will try it out.

I was thinking about getting one of these SSDs, but honestly these failure reports are putting me off.

Maybe there should be a thread for Runcore SSD owners to check in which ones they have, for how long etc. I hope there are many more problem-free SSds out there.

I agree with you. I wonder what the issue is??? I haven't heard much good news lately. I am currently using another manufacturer's 256 GB SSD with much success. There should be at least one alternative brand out by Christmas.

I believe that Runcore probably does a great job with support since there rep even has an account here. However, I believe its resellers aren't properly supporting the products they sell.

It is hard to say how many people have actually experienced problems. I had a problem at one point which was as simple as the LIF connection. Let's face it, this is a finicky machine too. Competition will be good, but for now the price is hard to beat for an SSD as fast as the Runcore except when it fails buyers.

I know of about 35 people who bought the Runcore who emailed or PM'd me here about theirs. I have seen about five people post about their problems here, but only one person has sent me a message with problems they had... so it's hard to tell what the failure rate is, and if that's user related, installation related, a shipping damage issue, or a product failure issue.

I just don't know why it's happening? But mine never failed once I got the cable issue straightened out...

got rma

Scottsdale, I tried the trick with the cable, but it did not solve the problem. By the way I got encouraged by your posts to buy the runcore ;) But as I said I have been very happy with it for the last seven months. It really made a difference in speed. No regrets here. I guess these things happens especially with a fairly new technology like SSD.
My mood is much better now. Mydigitaldiscount promptly send me an RMA, followed by an email from the customer service rep. Nothing to complain about so far. Hope that the replacement is more reliable.

Update

I just wanted to let you guys know that the replacement Runcore 128 is so far trouble free. 2 weeks and no problems.

SSDing the macs (mac mini, macbook and now the Air) is certainly the best upgrade I have ever done.

Can you check the firmware version? Should be in System Profiler. In any case, it no longer does me any good, as I put the $400 (+whatever I can sell my Rev. C for) towards the new MBA.
