So, I just ordered the iPad Pro base m1 model, even if I absolutely doesn't need one.

After using my iPad 6th generation for a few years I felt like it was time for a new one. I solely use my iPad for non intensive tasks (browsing, streaming, word processing and to control my HTPC). The obvious choice would have been to just get an iPad 9th gen. Even so, it's my most used home device by far, and as such, I felt like I could splurge a little bit. I also wanted access to the magic keyboard, which would add to the price even more.

So i settled for the base iPad Air 64 gb. It being 700 dollars in my country, it's was the absolute limit for what I could personally justify on spending on a tablet. Promotion is nice, but not something that would make it or break for me. I don't care for the better speakers or Face ID. And, as stated, I don't do any intensive tasks.

However, my MacBook is acting up so I need to turn it to service before my warranty ends in two weeks. I absolutely need a laptop for work, so I figured my new iPad would do fine as a substitute for a few weeks. Unfortunately, my iPad Air was subject for a delayed shipment. Every day the date was pushed forward and I got a message today that it wouldn't be delivered until next week at the earliest. Me needing a substitute laptop fast caved and ordered the iPad m1 for 950 bucks instead.

Why am I making this thread? I dunno, I just need some validation for my purchase and some good arguments I can use for myself to justify this absolutely ludicrous acquisition.

I’m in the same boat.

Sold my iPad 6 and wanted something better since it is also my most use device at home.

Still, wanted the Air and bought it online. Taking a lot of weeks to ship, so I’m thinking about buying the Pro. It’s an awesome device and I do like having FaceID and 120Hz.

It would be 256€ more than the Air. I’m debating if I should do it. I’m a light user also but love tech. Still, 800€ for a tablet is A LOT.

Were there literally no other Airs which you could buy from a different store, refurbished, or second hand?

In the end, you got a better iPad. Enjoy it.

I got it yesterday. I must admit it’s a sweet, sweet experience especially coming from an Ipad 6th gen. Still crazy expensive, but I guess you get what you pay for.

However I absolutely hate that iPad OS is so unfathomably underdeveloped compared to Mac OS. It’s full of little annoyances when using it as a work tool and I find it hard to actually replace it as a laptop, even if my work mainly consists of word editing and excel. The external monitor support is absolutely ass as well.

I went from ipad air 2 (2014) to pro 11. Cant even compare the two! Sold off my hot intel macbook and never looked back. (but not likely for long) Hopefully it lasts just as long as the air 2 did.

I bought an iPad Pro 11" 2021 the other day. I would like to ask if anyone knows how prevalent screen pressure distortion is on these models? I see some distortion only on the left side(portrait) when I press a little bit more than usual. The rest of the screen is without issues.

I was thinking if this is something worth exchanging a new one for, or if it's on every single device?

Every iPad I've had has had parts of the screen more sensitive to pressure than the others. Now, I've seen some videos where people lightly press on the screen in one area and the whole LCD display goes nuts. I have to press pretty hard to get that wavy look but some parts of the screen show it a little easier than others (but I still gotta press pretty hard to show it). So imo that's normal depending on how hard you gotta press to show it.

Enjoy quad speakers and superior display - most essential features of any tablet. It will also last you longer than Air (M1 and more RAM). Much more premium experience for just $200 more. (better?)?

Still €650 is a lot of money, so why just not have the best tablet currently available? (wish Apple paid me for this)

It works well for everything I need it for, but the 3sec Word doc opening for every document is so bad, not sure if Apple or MS is to blame. It should be instant as on desktop.

The Pro is a great tablet, the best you buy IMO. But buying something because what you wanted wasn't available at the time is a sure path to regret.

I think this is only if you’re downgrading or settling for a lower model. If you ended up with a higher end model, you’ll forget about the extra money spent eventually.

Like, if I wanted 1TB and only 512GB and 2TB were available, I’m more likely to regret settling for 512GB when I find myself having to delete stuff in order to make room for other stuff. Meanwhile, I might grumble about the extra $400 for the 2TB initially but at least I wouldn’t have any issues regarding lack of storage. I might even appreciate the splurge if my usage ends up going over 1TB.

Apart from the initial download from OneDrive/Dropbox, files open pretty instantly on my iPads (2021 12.9 & 2017 12.9).

It is true. I didn't realize so many documents are reguraly being redownloaded (followed by spinning wheel animation I mentioned). I use exclusively Files between PC, iPhone and iPad.

Power is definitely not an issue on my Air, but I’d prefer the superior speakers and display of the Pro. It’s unfortunate how expensive it is, but it’s the best iPad available. In the future, I plan to go Pro.

At least for me, the additional expense is offset by the fact that the hardware is now so good I can go longer between upgrades.

I’ve not noticed any issues with the speakers on the Air. If I didn’t read these threads, I’d never know to be perfectly frank. It’s a really good tablet I’ve found for a mid tier device.
They're decent speakers, but if you compare it directly to the Pro there's no contest. The Pro sounds fuller and can get much louder.

Also, due to the placement of the speakers on the Air, if you're holding it in landscape orientation (which is the ideal orientation for those speakers), you can cover the speakers a little with your hands and muffle the sound a bit.

Still, the Air's sound is better than any other non-Pro iPad.

Ah fair enough, I’m not likely to ever directly compare it to a Pro to be honest. I play YouTube vids on the arm of the sofa occasionally so no wonder I’m not having any issues lol. I just see these comments a lot of here and the Air seems to be quite unpopular on Mac Rumours for some reason. It’s a mid tier device that sits between the entry level iPad and the Pro lines, so it’s not going to be as good as a Pro but many of us don’t need a Pro. I think I paid £530 for my Air back in January with about £50 off and it replaced my 2017 iPad. I’ve been happy with it for the minimal things I do and would recommend it to anybody who doesn’t want to spend £800-£1500 on a tablet
