Yes but the government needs to get some of it through taxes, so the way to do it is to create a company, which is a lot more trouble than just using your parents' name.

Am I the only one who is annoyed by this whole thread? :)

I've been a programmer for years and have been told by my boss to learn Obj-C to build an iPhone interface for one of our software packages. I'm working on it on my own, but I've asked a couple of (I thought) very good legitimate questions here and got zero responses. This kid has two pages on his thread so far and he doesn't know flip about programming, and seems like to me he doesn't really WANNA know. He just wants to make a quick buck on the App Store to buy some more drums, as if that's even possible for someone who doesn't know a thing about coding.

Instead of trying to help him slap a couple of things together to make a simple app that in all honesty probably wouldn't even get approved for the App Store, we should be telling him to start at the basics. And I mean the REALLY basics.

Learn standard C to get a grounding in C-style languages. Start working on Java to quickly get a hang of object-oriented programming. Get a book like Beginning iPhone Development by Dave Mark and Jeff LaMarche, or get the e-book version of it like I did (it's a pretty good introduction to coding the iPhone, with an emphasis on the user interface stuff). You can't become a programmer overnight, which is what you're asking the people here to help you do. It really is not that simple.

Seriously if you have so many people who follow you that are willing to help you get a new set of drums, just put a paypal thing on your web pages and ask for donations. It would probably be more effective in the very short term like you seem to want. Or pay somebody to code it for you.

Apologies for having somewhat a negative tone, but jeez. Be realistic with the kid. Happy New Year to everybody! :)

Are you legally allowed to make money if you're under 14? Unless you publish under you're Dad's name...

Dad's name.

Parent's name.

I see what you're saying. I'm being completely honest! I don't want to learn how to program. I really just want to know specifically how to code what I am trying to do. I might learn some stuff from it to make future apps. But I really don't have the time or patience to start learning Java, then go through all sorts of coding tuts and guides and books, all to learn how to do a simple iPhone with a drumset.

And this is why there are so many bad apps on the store. The solution; raise the developers fee to $1000 and these kiddies will stop trying to make a fortune by releasing fart makers and speed dial apps.

There are probably close to 100k developers for the iPhone(if not more), out of those maybe 100 have made a lot of money off their app...it's not this money making machine like people think.

Well, I already paid the $100, so I would like to at least try.

Yeah but I don't really buy that. I looked at your youtube page and your video editing skills are pretty tight. I can edit video too but I can't make it snap like that. Just like it takes time and patience to learn how to do that, so will coding. You gotta learn the basics. Hell you gotta learn them just so people can help you, because otherwise you won't even know what we're talking about half the time. :)

The thing is, what you're wanting to do has been done before on the App Store. Probably a bunch. So if you're doing an instruments app, you've got to do something spectacular to get it to sell, something that hasn't already been done.

You don't know how to program and don't want to spend the effort to learn it and yet you somehow know that the app you are trying to write is simple? Sorry, but that's a FAIL in my book.

Why would you pay the $100 when you don't want to learn how to code? I don't think you realize it, but making a good app takes time, you are not going to sit down for 20 minutes and bang out a best seller. If you are serious about this, you should learn how to code. People aren't going to write an app for you.

What you want to do, if done well, is not anywhere near as simple as you think. Do any of your non-musical friends think they can do some great professional-level drumming with just a few hours of practice?

(It's often a common illusion. Good professionals in many fields can make really difficult stuff seem really easy.)

Either be prepared for several weeks/months of intensive study. Or hire an experienced competent developer to do it for you.

I have to agree with a lot of the comments here.

I've been in the IT industry for over 20 years working on mainframes and PCs using a variety of languages. I've met way too many people who think that software is the fast track to making money or becoming famous without having to do the hard slog. It's not. it takes dedication, hard work and persistence, not to mention a good understanding of what people want and how to get it to them.

There is a lot of software out there which is the result of this sort of attitude and most of it is rubbish that no-one in their right mind would pay for it.

I'll echo the sentiment of others here and say that if you think you can just learn enough to write the app then you are dreaming. If you are really serious about the app (which I doubt) you would realise you don't have the skills and team up with someone who does. Good software can come from a team of people where one has the vision and another the coding skills. That's your best chance.

I'd suggest you go get a paper route or some other after school job. You are far more likely to get the money that way. You could always try and get your dad to match you dollar for dollar.

That's how I got my first drum kit.

I completely agree with your third paragraph. I am completely serious about it, but I think I need to find someone else to help write it with/for me. Although I think in some cases, the simplest apps can be the best. I mean, look how popular some apps are: The flashlight, the cowbell, stuff like that.

And this is not my only way to make money. Me being a Youtube partner, my income comes from ad revenue on my videos. This is just a different approach that I decided to take.

But I already have a nice drum set...I've been playing for 6 years. It's just time to upgrade the cymbals...

And I know this isn't Drummerworld, but:

No way!?

Meh, i had exactly the same idea :D except my dad won't invest the £100 ...

I play the drums woo only for 2years tho.. Grade 2 Distinction :) Oh and im also 14 :p
I know a small amount of coding im not gonna hype myself up or anything but i can do a bit not C or anything but hey..
I am willing to learn C and not trying to hijack your thread but any help would be appreciated. Seeing as i can code a little and i have some photoshop skills etc i would be willing to help you for nothing :) except maybe my name in the App like made by ..

Other thoughts : It WILL take time its not gonna happen overnight so your going to have to be prepared to put some time in.

To start with you might want to find stock images of each drum and cymbal you want to add in. (You could use your own but you'd have to take it apart and photograph on white/black).

I downloaded the .pdf about Xcode and i recommend you do as well, as many have said i recommend you try and purchase a simple starters book on amazon. There are also good forums (this one is good too ) specifaclly for iPhone development.
Btw do you have an iPhone or iPod touch? i take it you do :) Mine has "The Drummeister" engraved on the back :p. I will send you a Personal Message over youtube so you can reply if you want. Thanks for bothering to read this.
Good Luck
And remember im willing to help:p

Thank you! I emailed you back. I am starting to read an online PDF on xcode. And stock images shouldn't be too hard to find. I can get nice drum recordings from Guitar Center.

Hi again, I know Final Cut Studio, After Effects and Photoshop pretty well and am willing to make a few (or more) advertisement for your app if you allow me to come into your partnership. I'm working on a project that should be done today and will PM you it. Please consider this and good luck. Meanwhile, I'm gonna PM you an intro I did for a project.

Regards,
David

If you have some spare time you could work on some and email me/zach them.
it's starting to sound like a buisness :p but i'm doing it cause i want to learn and hopefully code my own apps to.

Thanks for the offer

Just realize that you will also need to secure permission to use those copyrighted images and recordings in your app.

Hey, Thanks im pretty sure Zach will take the photos and i don't know about the recording's but thanks for the point

Not looking to make any money off of ads but off of apps would be nice. It is starting to sound like a business though!:p I like that, I think. I would also like to code my own apps and I think that's the end goal for all of us in the long run. I would like to learn together via email because I think it would be a lot easier.

Yeah, I guess copyrighted images would be a problem. I'll use pics of drums from people on Drummerworld Forum. And I'll record the sound files myself, from my own drums.

As far as ads though, I think we should finish the actual app first, don't you think? If you want to help with coding, that would be great, but I think I've got advertising all covered.
