I'm one of the people in the wait for next version camp myself. For me I really want to see all the wrinkles work themselves out before buying one. Especially how the whole Apple vs Amazon thing works out on the ebook front. For now I'm perfectly happy using my iPhone as an ebook reader(have a Kindle too but since I got an iPhone I've just been using the Kindle app). I figure they'll be releasing a second gen version by next Xmas which is an acceptable time frame for me. If they don't and I like how the feature set of the iPad plays out then I might end up getting one for Xmas anyway. Although not buying the 1st gen of a new device is probably a smart move in general.

That's what I'm thinking, though whether I'll be able to resist the temptation is another question entirely. I'll definitely wait until a month or two after the release date; any "1st gen problems" should be apparent by then, and I can make an informed decision.

I'm mostly holding out for:
1) Multitasking
2) 128gb memory

Aside from that, everything else would be gravy.

First off, because apple products hold their value and you can EASILY sell them later when you upgrade.

I think it's so funny when people wait a whole year, as though there wouldn't be something better coming along after they make their purhase later. They just sit back and watch everyone else enjoy their cool new gadget.

So relating to the ipad, do you plan to buy and sell later? Or will you wait a whole year?

I know there is a thread asking if you will buy the ipad, but what I'm asking is:
If you do buy this item, do you plan on selling it later? Or are you really going to wait for the next version? :D

yep i plan i sell my 3g that has bootloader 5.8 for 200 bucks.

I'll be waiting for gen 2 of the ipad. If some of the missing features appear on the next one, then the first iteration isn't going to "hold it's value" very long.

So keep laughing, I guess?

Maybe we'll be lucky and MacRumors will have unearthed the facts about the features of iPad version 2 before version 1 goes on sale. Then we can make fact-based decisions about whether to buy now or wait for the revision.

Apple should bring the 'next version' out first, then they would sell more straight away. ;)
But they are bringing the first and "next" version at the same time! Remember what happened with iPhone?

iPhone, first version: No 3G. Next version: With 3G.
iPad, first version: No 3G. Next version: With 3G.

See?

Unless they start shipping DOA or something, I'm going to buy the first version. Then depending on how much better the revision is, I'll either sell and buy a new one or keep it. I'll only buy the second version if it has: thinner bezel & camera, or some
other amazing feature.

No sense in buying a weak first generation product. I waited until the third iPhone before getting one. Before then, I felt their product still lacked in even the most basic of functions.

But is the iPad really a first generation product? Yes, there has never been a product marketed as the "iPad" before this, but the device itself runs software that is anything but first generation. iPhone OS 3.2, to be precise, is an impressive evolution of something that has been out there for at least three years. So I hardly view the iPad as a first gen product, but rather a refined technology that is sure to not disappoint.

More importantly, the iPad at this moment isn't really meant to be a complete offering. Rather, it is a solid foundation for the future of mobile computing. Sure, the iPad doesn't have a camera, and doesn't act as a standalone computer, but those ideals cannot be reached without a transition device that brings those concepts closer to reality. That is the purpose of the iPad. And at $500, it sounds pretty good to me.

Given the history of the iPhone, I find that highly unlikely.

Givin the history of the apple tv it is likely. You cant just say one device gets an update and another has to. This is more than 2 times the price of the iPhone and doesn't need to be updated as much due to little compotion. This device could also become more from just software

Wrong.

AppleTV is acknowledged by Apple to be a "hobby". That is why they ignore it.

iPad is VITAL to the future of Apple. Why?
1. The tablet form factor finally taking off and thus, as a "mobile device company" they need to be in it.
2. iPod sales (remember them?) are in freefall. Sure, laptop and iPhone sales are through the roof. Apple needs the next new thing to sustain revenue.

Regardless of whether the first iPad is a market success, the next update will be a huge priority for Apple, ahead of OSX and probably iPhone too.

And finally, what's with this "next version" thing? The hardware is completely separate to the software. As an iPhone 1.0 user, the software upgrades on this thing in terms of functionality far outstrip any other device or computer I've ever owned. Sure, the iPhone 1.0 software was pretty crap, but the new features of 2.0 and 3.0 really opened up the device.

This will happen with iPad. So yes, you shouldn't buy one if you don't see a need for a tablet, or you really need that camera, but otherwise, buy it and enjoy the software upgrades!

If they are lossing money how are they at a all time high?

Also if they want money they Arnt going to simply bring out a new device till the 1st gen sales go down. Not to mention I doubt people will buy a new ipads one year latter with just a camera added

You can't just think how apple product cycle are. Some are the same and others are random. Not to mention the ipads hardware isn't missing much. Also the ipad isn't a iPod like device it's not going to follow in their foot steps

don't want to wait

I want to get it when it first comes out - historically, i've waited to buy and went with the previous generation production cause I felt the new version didn't offer enough value to justify the price (and there were things about the previous generation I liked better) I did this with my macbook pro & my mac pro. However, I suspect that is because those two purchases were bigger investments that I planned to use for 3-5 years.

With my iPod touch 2G I played around with the 1st Gen, but ended up waiting til the 2G to buy it and bought it the day it came out with no regrets.

With iPad, for some strange reason I don't want to wait. If I read/needed an ebook reader, it would be a no brainer, but part of me strongly wants to get it to play with it and explore what it can do. I'm thinking I'll just get the base wifi model for $500, and then in 8 months when they come out with their next model, I'll sell it and consider getting the new one. Unlike the iPhone, this has no contract so I will not be left in the lurch should a new version come out in year. Assuming I can get $350 for it, I basically rented the iPad for a year for $150, that doesn't seem too unreasonable.

I've decided this is a wait and see product.

Ya, it's going to be like the first time you see somebody in Starbucks playing with one. I think that's what's going to happen to a lot of people who are saying that it's just a big ipod and blah, blah, blah. As soon as they see one in person and even play with one at the Apple store, they'll be plunkin' down the dough for one.

Bought the ipod touch and then a month later I realized I should have just bought the iphone. Bought the iphone and three months later 3Gs came out and I had to have video. Took a major hit on that deal but you know what, I don't care. I've never been good at waiting for anything and I'm not sure if I got another year on this rock or not so I'll buy the new ipad and most likely buy whatever new ipad that comes out after that. It hurts so good.

sorry, i don't showboat my stuff, if it was the case i'd pimp the latest MBP fully decked out instead of my plastic whitebook; seeing apple's recent hardware history it's safe bet to skip their 1st gen releases.

not being the first in line doesn't bother me, maybe some others...
