I actually like the MBA's trackpad. The rough silver feels good on my fingers when I'm doing two-fingered scrolling. Also, call me old fashioned, but I like having a button to press for things (even though I have tap to click enabled). I preferentially use the button for dragging items around for some reason. Because the button doesn't register my thumb's presence on it, I am actually faster using it. I leave my thumb there and use multiple fingers all over the trackpad to get stuff done clicking and non-clicking whenever appropriate. On the glass trackpad, I can't rest my thumb there, it just freezes the trackpad.

I agree, the trackpad on the air is the best...hands down, not sure why but it is on both rev. A and now rev. C, still better than all others including uMBP 13, 15" and 17" and of course the older pre-unibody MBP...

^^ you can tap to click on the MBP... check trackpad settings. I never actually click the button on my aluminum macbook.
unless did this rev remove it?! i don't see why they would... did you check the trackpad settings? sorry if that sounds like u didn't, but this would be really strange if they removed it.

To the OP, really? I love the glass and I am waiting for a MBA update hoping it get the glass trackpad... as soon as it does I am going to switch over!

Wow! Tap to click. I didn't know my MBP could do that. Thanks a lot mate, its ruddy smashing.

i dont know if it is just me or it is my mbp...but compared to my mba, i think my mbp's trackpad is less smooth compared to the mba that i perviously own. since this is a new mbp i brought last week, im literally obsessed thinking if it is just the sweat of my hands or the trackpad's problem...

I much prefer the aluminum trackpads on macbook air's to the glass ones on all other macbooks. I really like the entire trackpad is a single button thing, but I like the feel of the aluminum ones much better. With an update sure to come sometime this year (I hope), I am worried they will cover it in glass just like the others.

Is there anyone else out there who prefers the aluminum to the glass?

+1 :D

So ALL the NEW MBP's that have glass trackpads cannot use the tap to click function? My wife has a year old MBP and she can tap to click.. Can anyone verify this? Is it the hardware or software?

@ Scottsdale, i think you are right about the current MBA PLASTIC Trackpad, but is it coated with some sort of special paint, because most "Windows" laptops see wear and tear on the plastic trackpads where it is used frequently, yet after two years my MBA Trackpad shows no sign of use at all (and my Keyboard shows little use as well) even though i use this machine 6-8 hours a day :) cannot wait for the new MBA, and Scottsdale i would also love to know what your dream MBA is :)

I am not sure that I have a significant preference to the glass vs MBA style trackpad.

Compared to trackpads on most other (non-Mac) laptops, I love the larger size, the multi-touch, ect. When I go back to a non-Mac laptop, I am constantly trying to right click by tapping with 2 fingers... scroll with 2 fingers, etc.

Both the glass and the aluminium/plastic seem to have the same basic function to me.
