Apple went from an also-ran tech company to the most valuable tech brand within 10 years and is now has the 1st or 2nd largest market cap depending on day/time. I'd say IF Apple is "cocky" it's well deserved. But what I really think is that they keep making products people want to buy even in a recession w/ 9.1 unemployment. Apple may not have invented a lot of the tech they employ in their devices but they are the first to make it useable for the masses. No other company is really doing that right now.

Agreed! The Treo was a nice phone for the times.

Yep, former Treo owner on both Palm and Windows Mobile. While I love the iPhone (waiting for my 4S now), Windows Mobile had the first phone/PDA. But people always think that Apple invented the concept, when they didn't. What Apple did invent though was tying their PDA/phone to a specific online store, the App Store. While the iPhone is decent hardware, its iOS and the App Store that made iPhone what it is, not the hardware design.

New York, Baby!
The phone I had before my 1st gen iPhone? An HTC TyTN. Windows Mobile and yes it had all of the features and more than the iPhone, but it wasn't easy to use, getting new apps was a pain and any paid for apps were stupidly expensive and not really much point in getting them. The media app was a pain to use and despite having 3G, web browsing was crap.

This is where Apple excels. They take good ideas poorly implemented and get more people than geeks exposed to them. So they can be cocky.

I don't get this request of Apple, should they act like the new features they add to iOS aren't important or groundbreaking?

No, they're marketing their software, they're supposed to make sure everything seems like the greatest thing since sliced bread. It's up to educated consumers to decided what features are actually that ground break and which features are already available elsewhere on the market.

I would be cocky too if people queued up all week to buy one of my new products

Also it isn't about who did it first, it's about who did it best. FaceTime for example was hardly new. But Apple refined the user experience, put it on a range of popular products and ran a successful marketing campaign.
