Good questions I’d like to know that too. I have an SE 2020 and it’s fine since I use other devices to supplement it, but yikes, any time I use it for navigation, listen to radio on my headphones, or anything similar for even like 30-60 minutes, it takes a significant toll on the battery. And this is after replacing the battery last January.
Ouch. I’ve got the SE 2022. I’ve used it for navigation for a solid hour and the battery didn’t take too much of a hit. However, there’s barely any 5G out where I am driving. If I head out to where there’s 5G that drains the battery if I’m on speakerphone especially. I’m really not understanding yet what the benefits to 5G are. I’m hoping these new modems handle power consumption a lot better.

Agreed. I’m using a 11 Pro and would love a 13 Mini, but I’m not giving up my Telephoto camera and the next iPhone I’m gonna get will have to have a ProMotion display. After trying a 13 Pro in the store and held a Mini next to it, I won’t put up with smudge for another generation.
I’m just hoping that they’ll bring back the Mini in some years when my 11 Pro is reaching its end and upgrade then.

I wouldn't think ProMotion would make as much difference on the smaller screen. I definitely notice the difference between my iPad Pro 11 and my iPad Air 4. I wouldn't get a iPad mini until they added it. But for the small screen of the iPhone mini I don't think I'd notice too much.

Anyway there are things I'm willing to give up in order to use the smaller and lighter iPhone. The question will be in a few years when I need a new device with Apple have something, or will I be willing to give up using an iPhone for a smaller Android device if that fits better.

Basically everything about my 13 mini I love. I love the one-handed size, the lightweight portability, the way it “disappears” in my pocket as someone else here so aptly put it. The battery life is generally quite impressive for my use-case, the high-PPI display is crisp, and the dark green finish looks beautiful (especially paired with a green Silicone Case). The cameras are great but I sometimes do miss the optical zoom on my 8 Plus of yore.

But there’s one thing missing: ProMotion. See, Apple’s much-discussed OLED pulse-width modulation implementation hasn’t given my eyes any serious trouble since the XS days (I had to return one for that very reason), but the mini’s 60 Hz OLED display sometimes makes me feel like my eyes are bleeding—mostly when scrolling. I can’t help but pick up on the choppiness especially compared to the comfortably slight, fluid blur of my ninth-gen iPad’s LCD.

So I think this year will be the one in which I pick up a 14 Pro and join the ProMotion family in hopes of finding smoother, less visually-jarring pastures. The improved cameras, longer battery life, faster chip, and redesigned Face ID array will just help sweeten the deal—and hopefully help to make keeping the unit for several years a more palatable prospect.

All that said I’m sure there will be times where a fancy 14 Pro just can’t quite fill the mini-sized hole in my heart. This device is truly a practical engineering marvel and I’m sure it will always rank among my most-beloved iPhones.

P.S.: I know that USB-C is allegedly in the works but I honestly couldn’t care less about it. Most all of what I use (AirPods Pro, Magsafe Battery Pack, iPhone, and iPad) have Lightning ports and although USB-C would perhaps quicken the occasional backup to iTunes, I’m not itching to switch anytime soon.
I've updated at least every 2 years since my first iPhone, the 3GS. This is the first time I will top longer than 2 year. I love my 12 Mini and not continuing it is a big mistake. I made a video about it last year
. I think I need to make another saying goodbye.

Do you happen to use a fast charger or wireless charger? I have a 12 mini from release date with 97% battery health, it has always been charged using an old 5W charger over night.
No just the standard 5W charger with an auto shutoff cable.

5G enables higher bandwidth, but in practical terms today, most of the time it only makes a significant difference in highly crowded areas like stadiums and shopping areas.

I love the mini also, but I’m likely going back to a pro. As much as I love the weight, overall size, etc., I miss having a bit more screen real estate.

I’d prefer a regular 14 for weight, but I am beyond ready to lose the notch.
Same for me. Pro is so nice! Big difference! Sold my mini yesterday!

Oh thanks. I’m out on the edge of everything in a semi rural area. I guess I’ll see the benefits more as I get back to the things I used to do before the lockdown lifestyle.

Are you going to get a 13 mini before they disappear or wait to see if the form factor gets turned into an SE of some sort? I’ve got a 12 mini. I can’t use it right now because of something the 13 Pro did to my nervous system. But I’m hoping someday I can use it again.

Oh my…can you please elaborate? It’s alright if not of course. None of my beeswax.

Somehow even though the 12 mini’s iteration of pulse width modulation initially gave me the feeling of being punched in the eye sockets, I somehow managed to adjust to the display fairly quickly and was able to use the phone for several months. I’d also had a 12 Pro Max with a defective screen that I traded in for the 13 Pro. I wanted that zoom lens for portraits.

Unfortunately a month’s usage of the 13 Pro started causing headaches that even acetaminophen and aspirin couldn’t kill. And it caused an extreme sensitivity to all of my other OLED displays that I had been using with no problem. After a little over a month I was able to go back to using my Android phones again but if I try to use my 12 mini the pain in my eyes and head is even more intense than when I started with it. It’s a very weird situation, I know.

Fortunately not many people are going to have such a freaky problem. I was diagnosed years ago with atypical migraine. As was my mom. My paternal grandmother was a conventional migraine sufferer. That’s worse. Most of the time I don’t get conventional headaches. More like seizures that mess up my speech. There’s been a few newscasters who had that kind of migraine on air if you are curious and care to search it to see an example.

Geez, that’s pretty horrifying. I’m sorry you’ve had so much trouble with Apple’s OLED-borne PWM.

Just know I see and hear you because I do get a little bit of that with my 13 mini (especially while scrolling, as mentioned) and if the 14 Pro is any worse I’ll certainly be shipping it right back to Mr. Apple, just as I did with the excruciating XS I took for a spin.

Oh yeah the XS…My XS Max caused a seizure that almost induced me to go to the hospital. I spent a couple of days battling a mildly weird feeling in my eyes on it, but it seemed ok overall especially compared to the iPhone X I’d had for a month.

Then about the 3rd or 4th day I had it, (I don’t remember anymore), I’d watched a movie on it, no problem, and then went into the kitchen under recessed lighting that also uses pwm dimming. I was looking up a recipe and bam…had something that was like a stroke and a mild seizure hybrid.

For a few minutes, I had stroke-like effects to my ability to speak, read, write and understand what was being said to me. I lost control of my left arm. If I had not had this kind of seizure before, it would have been frightening, but I have gotten something like this before with a certain brand of cola. So I’ve been through this and knew everything would go back to normal. And it did, but I was extra pwm sensitive for months. I had to again avoid my usually benign Android displays for a long while.

I’ve had regular and dye contrast scans and there’s been no signs of permanent damage so far. But I am a couple of years overdue for a follow up scan thanks to Covid.

The more years away I get from the midpoint of menopause, which was the peak of my sensitivity to all migraine triggers, the less lasting and dramatic my reactions are to pwm…usually.

The funny thing about all of this is I’m the only member of my family and my husband’s family who can spend as much time as I want using VR, at least Samsung’s version of it that they had a few years ago. Everyone else got motion sickness after a few minutes. I don’t know if I’d be so lucky with any other VR devices though.

My 13 Mini is the only device that's keeping me in the Apple ecosystem. It's size alone is why it replaced my wallet yes my wallet. Its the phone I carry everywhere.. I have a magsafe wallet attached to it with my debit and license. It sits in my center console as my dedicated Apple carplay. I take it in and out of the car when I need to use Apple pay. It's basically the phone I need when I need to be a phone. I almost had it a year and my battery health is still at 100%.

But In fairness it's not my main device as I'm an Android user... so when I'm at home relaxing and doing content consumption like social media, Netflix, YouTube I prefer a bigger screen.

as someone with a 12 mini and an iPad Pro, I don't get this at all. ProMotion is a total nothing. I usually forget my iPad has it. But, to each his own.

And yet I notice the ProMotion on my iPP 11" every time. To me it makes so much of a difference to content and navigation. But I can wait for it on a phone - for me it's the minis or nothing.

Reading this I have the iPhone 12 mini myself I bought it used from a family member and I like the phone but the battery life is just not the best as they have said about the phone I do like it a lot I like the 13 mini to but my mini is mine and I don’t have to make any payments on it I just love the oled screen makes the colors really pop I have no plans to buy the 14 this year I am going to wait until the 15 next year which is said to get usbc

I had the 13 mini for a while good phone! Issue for me was lack of battery, and small screen size. I found it hard to browse on the coach or bed at night, like. I could on the pro.... so sold the 13 mini in prep for whatever the 14 brings. Nice phone but just not what I need exactly 😏
