The iPad is WAY less cool when no Internet is available.

that's what I'm worried about.
I think I'm gonna go with wifi tho and if the next iPhone and OS4 don't offer some sort of tethering I'm going to switch to verizon and do that "hot spot" thing some of the phones do.

I can't get enough of the damn thing. Apple's got a real winner on their hands

Once tethering becomes available it will all be moot.

It would be way less of an issue, but not totally moot.

I really want the built in Internet at least as an option so I my iPad could function completely separate from my iPhone no matter what.

Additionally, I'm not sure I'd want to hop off a long train ride with a totally dead iPhone from tethering when my iPad with integrated 3G would be just fine, with loads of battery life yet and my ability to make calls and "get things done" wouldn't be hampered.

For those that think that others don't need the 3G because they have a iPhone, what about those of us that travel, or need it for business, or just want to be connected any time we want to. I am a outside salesman and having a 3g iPad, I will be able to connect to my home office from my car and get work done in the field. IMHO

People talk about it 3g being too much but all you have to do is be realistic about it.

Try out 250mb a month and track your usage. That's 15 dollars.

It's not that $15 is a lot of money to a person who can buy an iPad in the first place. (This is not meant as an offensive statement, I just don't want to get into a debate over whether it is or is not a lot of money.) It's the idea that I'm already paying ATT for the exact same thing on my iPhone even though I barely use it. And who believes 250mb a month is going to last very long? Meanwhile, you get enough of these little bills every month and they start to add up.

I'm not on a crusade or anything, and there are definitely times when I am tempted to get the 3G, there's just something about paying three different bills a month to access the internet that makes me cranky.

Just curious...

I know it's a rough number, but how long would 250 mb last? Week? Day? Hours?

I know it's dependent on usage but just for surfing?..

I just cannot see myself paying AT&T twice a month for essentially the same thing!

Not to mention that it costs Apple a few bucks to throw in a 3G radio but were paying a LOT more for it.

Either way another 30$ monthly is the main factor for me... Do I want another bill?

You mean paying AT&T for access to 2 completely independent mobile devices?

Decided today that Im gonna ditch my ATT USB card for the MacBook, Buy a wifi iPad and get the Verizon MiFi. I pay $60 a month now for the ATT card, Might as well pay $60 to Verizon and be able to run my MacBook, iPad, and 3 other devices of my choice..
Kinda seems like a no brainer for anyone with a laptop and iPad..
Just my 2 cents

Yeah, but its the same owner, so when you use the iPad's 3G, the iPhone's 3G data plan is not used. I think the least they could do is give current 3G data plan subscribers a discount.

Just a thought, but we really hv no idea of battery life with the 3G radio running...could be quite a bit reduced from the 11 to 12 hours I get off my wifi iPad

If you look at the Apple web site, they are estimating an hour less battery life for the 3G. I think this will all depend on personal usage and whether the 3G radio is turned on.

I agree that would be "nice" of them, however the reason it's done by device is that both *can* be on the network at once.

You may be on your 3G iPhone and your child or spouse may be using the 3G on the iPad.

In a nice world, I too would appreciate a slight discount for having both, but I think you can also make a good argument for AT&T to simply treat them as separate devices.

Remember. The iPad is sans contract. Would you prefer a slight discount ($10 less/month if you have both iPhone and iPad 3G) but the iPad to *also* be on a big stiff 2 year contract?

I sure wouldn't. But that's just me.
I'm fine with the iPad 3G plans & pricing personally.

Yep, still love mine too. It's almost too easy to pick it up. I have to stop myself from constantly using it. :D

Agreed! Love mine. No need for 3G. Probably didn't need 64gb, but I did it anyway, and now I'll never worry bout it. Traded up from 32gb and no restocking fee. Apple rocks. All naysayers are crazy. This thing is a game changer.

Well, I've had an iPhone for a little over 2 years, and I'm still smitten(even without 4.0).
I can only imagine how it'll be with an iPad(we have to wait until 'late April', here in the UK).
I thought about getting a 32GB 3G version, but as a previous poster stated, my 3GS will cover that, so I'll get a 32GB wi-fi.

Last week I rode an Amtrak train for 4 hours and then was at a hotel all weekend that only had wired internet available.

Brutal.

That was 3 solid days of REALLY wishing I had 3G on my iPad.

That's why I just picked up an Airport Express. Works like a dream! ;)

I just use MyWi on my jailbroken 3.1.2 iPhone 3GS. It works awesome. In fact, I was waiting for my wife to get her hair cut while watching Spartacus on Netflix the other day, and it was streaming in the highest quality without hitching. ABC player also worked great over 3G.

The only drawback to using MyWi on the iPhone is that your iPhone battery will be dead in about 4-5 hours. I wish someone would create a dock->dock connector cable that would let you do a straight tether from your iPad to your iPhone. Heck, the iPad probably has enough battery to charge your iPhone while using the internet connection.

It could be when the camera connector kit comes out, we'll be able to do this, but my guess is that Apple will lock down that USB port and not allow tethering, thus leaving it for the jailbreaking community to enable this feature on our otherwise awesome device.

The wait for the 3G is killing me! I've almost broke down a few times and bought the wifi model. Been to best buy 3 times just to play with it! Haha
I think holding out for the 3G will be worth it. Having the 3G and being able to use the iPad anywhere is going to be great. I wish we atleast had a real date for it tho..
I need answers!!

I just ended up buy a MiFi 2200 from Verizon. Best money I speed each month. Now I can connect my Macbook Pro, iPhone 3GS (when ATT doesn't have 3G coverage MiFi does) and iPad all at the same time if I want to. I also use it at my church to connect the Mac Mini they have there to it, since they don't have DSL,Cable, etc.

Also, I don't like the look of the black plastic piece at the top of the 3G iPads.

What does it cost per month, if I may ask? I have checked Verizon's site but I can't find rates for this service.
