I never understood that ridiculousness. I wouldn’t be caught dead looking silly standing in line overnight to buy something. Just pure nuttyness

If there is pleasure and enjoyment, nothing is ridiculous.
there are people who wait days before their favorite singer's concert or to see a car race or a football match.
All this is the spice of life.

Camp out for a phone? I wouldn't even pre-order one! It's just a phone, I can wait and by doing so I sometimes save a bit of money and I get a more reliable device as I there are usually several firmware updates released fixing annoying bugs that I would have had to endure had I rushed to get one early on.

Waited in line a few times, including first iPhone in 2007 and I camped out once for the iPhone 6+ but those days are over as the phones have improved to much that the incremental upgrades do not create the excitement it once did.

I used to this multiples time in the past when I was younger. Not anymore. I wont deny it though those days where different. Fun times. I also met some cool people at that time. Great conversations. Funny that even years later I'm still good friends with 1 dude I met in line (gold IPhone 5S) at the Miami Beach store.

Living out west, I camped out for Pink Floyd tickets, Jimmy Page & Robert Plant tickets, and the original iPhone. I didn't drive a car in those days and it took half a day stringing together public transportation to get to the point of sale, so to even have a chance of getting one it meant showing up the night before.
The anticipation & excitement warranted it in each case. I regret nothing.
...that original iPhone was like a precious jewel.

I am always impressed on the great courage of people camping overnight waiting for iPhone as I just could not do it. I do not have the great courage to do so :) I understand that the event would be missed by those who enjoyed doing so. I bet it was fun a great moment to socialize with others who have same interest.

Yeah I really miss these years. Several iPhone and iPad releases I camped out at Apple Store in Oberhausen Germany. I'm from The Netherlands and back then we didn't have an Apple Store in The Netherlands.

I've never been involved in the big spectacular iPhone releases, but being in a camping line, bringing portable tents and pop-up chairs, conversing and sharing impatience-sorrows with an expansive crowd, visiting the local shops that happened to be near the line to have food while you wait... and the joy and fanfare of struggling into the store. It all sounds so cozy and fun. I wish I was there for those times...

For sure. One of those being people who come to threads for the sole reason of replying with negative opinions of a thing someone is just enjoying.

Well when a thread is made on an open public forum, it opens the subject up for discussion and for folks to give their opinions on the subject whether its agreeable with OP or not... If that's something you can't handle, then perhaps the internet is not for you.

Hey man, I'm just giving my opinion and it's pretty simple: replying to innocuous, feel-good posts for the sole purpose of peeing on someone's joy is crappy. If you can't handle it...

I know it's definitely not for everyone, but I do miss the camp-outs the night before launch.

As someone who upgrades annually, and whose career affords the flexibility of schedule required, I would camp out overnight to get the phone directly from the store every year.

I was almost always within the first few spots of the front of the line, often the front. It was always a festive atmosphere and I generally found the folks in line with me up front were often business owners, fellow engineers, and so on. We'd meet, learn about each other, and generally have a good time. I'd always bring a long extension cord and a large power-strip, which everyone around appreciated. Bonus for being at the front of the line: you'd be able to hop on the Apple Store's wifi.

It was always good times with good company; a bunch of people excited for the same reason. And as a really cool bonus, you'd get your shiny new toy the next morning. A fun annual event.

With the improvements of pre-order, and the cracking down of camping by the local shopping areas where the Apple Stores are, it's been a few years since a campout, and they'll likely not happen again ... but I remember those nights fondly.
Do it on Black Friday when the second batch rolls out and discounts are offered. What we're doing. We'll be in line at like 0400 so there won't be any camping but we'll be waiting.

Then again I've never camped all night for any product. That's kinda silly. If I'm going camping I'm going CAMPING. With a fire. And sausages. And a sleeping bag.

I've only camped out once, and it was the launch of the iPhone X. I was in college and did not have class during the days I waited, so I could afford to wait in line, while catching up on homework for school. I'll never forget how fun it was to spend a couple days with other apple fans in line at Apple's flagship store in San Francisco. We even went together to get supplies at the nearby target as a group and had pizza delivered to us in line! I've always just preordered ever since for convenience, but before the lines got bombarded with resellers, it was a fun time!

Waited 12 hours in line for iPhone 4S which was my first iPhone, was it ridiculous? yes, was I tired and sleepy? yes, was it worth it? also yes!....only did it once but tbh we had a blast and it's an experience/memory to talk about to others...

What sort of lines do you see for the iPhone 15's on Friday? Stores open at 8am....Can you pre-order via the store at 6am local time?

When I worked in the mall I used to see the Apple customers lining up for the release of the new phones and laugh. Lol I understoood people camping for sneakers bc they could be resold AND they usually sell out..but phones don’t sell out, dates might get pushed back but if you want a specific phone you can get it. Lol I always found the phone camping interesting

You can express your disinterest without being rude and condescending, you know.

Example: “That kind of thing never appealed to me. Standing in line overnight isn’t something I think I’d ever do, personally.”

Alternatively, just move on and don’t go out of your way to put someone down for liking something you don’t.

Not here to make fun of people, that's exactly the opposite of this thread and the OP's point. I'd NEVER wait online for sneakers but nobody is laughing at you. So feel good about that.

iPhones do sell out and many people buy extra so they can sell them for a profit, kind of like your sneakers but WAY MORE money, $190,000 as evidenced in the video below.

Wait times for some iPhone 15 Pro Max models are already at Nov. 24, that's considered sold out. Sure, you might be able to track one down sooner, but that's not the point of this thread. The seller of the iPhone below lol'ed all the way to the bank. Different opinions are always encouraged and necessary in discussions, just keep things respectful is all everyone is saying. No one is here for negativity. Hope this clarifies the point.

Sometimes it is required as it is the only way to ensure you obtain what you want. I have fond memories from 1974 camping out on the sidewalk outside the Montreal Forum overnight waiting for the ticket booth to open and start selling tickets for the December George Harrison concert. It was a very cold night but spirits were raised when just as the sun began to rise, DJs from CHOM-FM radio pulled up in vans, blasting Here Comes The Sun by the Beatles (composed by George of course) and distributed hot coffee to the hundreds of campers. Being the 70's, all through the night there was a sweet smell of herb in the air.
Those were the days.

I never waited in line overnight. And I don’t agree with all the nostalgia and sentimental feelings of fond memories of waiting in line the day before Black Friday, a new game console release or for an iPhone just to name a few. Come on now.

Haters gonna hate

That's what I'm talking about!! If you've never done it, it might seem weird, silly, or unenjoyable (that's what she said ;)). Or might mean nothing to you at all.

Memories in the end are what it's all about. Remembering and being able to feel in such vivid detail as you described above can't ever be bought or sold or minimized by someone's comments typed in a forum. If you don't get it now, you never will.

Lovers gonna love.

Not seeing any hate in this thread, wish I could say the same about virtue-signalling.

Funny old thing capitalism, where overt gushing is both positively encouraged and negatively defended in honour of the great kerching of acquisition.
