I'd carry around my PB and a text books quite a bit in it. I was rather picky about buying a bag though and after finding something online went to see it in person. They usually have the Duel at Zumies if you have any around, or you can go to dakine.com and search for a store and call around.

There are bigger ones out there so if you're going for tons and tons of stuff crammed in your bag it might not be the best choice. But it does fit a few large texts and a laptop quite well.

I guess I'll just add to it since I'm also in the market for a new bag. I've been looking/researching for quite a while. I'm considering an OGIO or a Crumpler. There isn't anywhere near me to check out either brand in person. I have handled a few of the Crumpler camera cases - the construction and materials were really impressive. I haven't, however, managed to locate anything from OGIO to give me an idea of the build and materials quality. I have read all the reviews of the various models on ebags and they all seem pretty good. But I'd like to compare it to a Crumpler. Of course, the Crumpler is a bit more expensive - but like a Mac, I know that you usually get what you pay for (but not always). Would anyone with a Crumpler care to comment on if they feel the bag was worth the extra price? Or anyone with an OGIO? Feedback, suggestions and comments are appreciated. Thanks.

Well I was looking at the Brenthaven for space or the Axio back packs, but I wasn't sure if they would have enough room.

I dont have a Zumies around me, nor have I ever heard of it... But I'll check out darkine.com. thanks

I use a Booq Vyper sleeve and a North Face backpack with laptop compartment to carry around my MacBook. I like this setup, because when I need to take my laptop, I'm not broadcasting that I'm carrying one. I love the North Face backpack, but at the Apple Store yesterday

I do the same pretty much (different sleeve). I cycle around Manchester UK to get around. I don't want people to think I have a laptop with me. Also when I gig in clubs (I DJ with my 12" powerbook) I don't want it to look like a laptop bag either.

I was in your same situation last summer. I read through hundreds of posts on here and went to all sorts of stores and finally settled on the Dakine Duel (http://www.ebags.com/dakine/duel_pack/product_detail/index.cfm?modelid=41280) It comes in several colors.

I was looking for something that didn't look like a laptop bag, that could be used as a regular backpack as well, had protection for the laptop, and looked good. I've been really happy with it. I have a 15" PowerBook and it fits well. The compartment for the laptop is really nice because the zipper is on the side. It makes sliding the PB in and out really easy. For me, it's the perfect college laptop bag!

PS - I think it looks better in person than online.

I think out of all bags, I'm leaning towards this one. I like it because it looks more like a backpack, and has some style to it. Lobos, how well protected is your PB? Is it padded inside? Thanks.

And to all, Thanks for all your advice and suggestions.

poppe, I didn't realize you had a 17". I don't know that the dakine duel would work with that.

Hey poppe. I've got the Dakine Duel backpack as well, and it definitely won't work with a 17" laptop. If you want a backpack that's got plenty of space, and doesn't advertise that you're carrying around a computer, I'd check out the Incase backpack from the Apple Store. I looked at it, and it was perfect. It will fit a 17" laptop with room for books and other stuff.

Also, Axio has a hybrid backpack that fits a 17" Apple notebook with room to spare too.

Hi AJ. I've got that backpack as well, and I definitely love it. It looks great, and is able to fit a decent amount of stuff, without looking like it's too big. As far as laptop protection goes, it's just got a lightly padded compartment. I'd probably suggest getting a simple laptop sleeve to go with it. You might not need it, but if you're a little overprotective of your notebook like I am, you'll probably want an extra layer of padding.

Also, I bought mine through Altrec (Dakine Duel), and I'd definitely buy from them again. Everything went well, and shipping was fast. The backpack does also look better in person than in that picture.

Awesome! Thanks alot T-Stex I finally made up my mind and I'm going to purchase it. Two more questions.. (1) Instead of books, you think like a pair of jeans and maybe 2-3 t-shirts would fit in there? Sometimes I sleep over my girlfriends place, and it would be cool if I can fit some clothes in there along with my MBP. (2)Which color do you have? I see that most of them are out of stock...

Hi. I think you'll be fine with putting a pair of jeans and some shirts in there. I don't have the bag with me now, but I'm sure there's enough space. I've got the bag in the same color as the main image of the Altrec page I had linked. I think the colors are pretty accurate, and if you use the zoom function on the image, you can get a good idea of the types of materials that make up the bag. It's definitely a great bag, and after using a bunch of Dakine stuff for snowboarding, I trust the brand.

Bags?

Hey,

Buy a Chrome bag.

I've been a bike messenger, a student, and a photographer at different times.

My chrome bag fits the bill.

It's a messenger style. The strap is hella padded which is nice. The metropolis hold EVERYTHING you'd ever need and if that's not enough, they have a huge bag called the Kremlin.

Bonuses include a seatbelt buckle so its easy to get your bag on and off. The support strap is in a better place than timbuk2 and crumpler . . . the bag wont move if you're riding.

It's waterproof. The construction is better than timbuk2 or crumpler or any of that manhattan portage. crap.

Just buy a sleeve for your MB, MBP and throw it in the bag.

There's plenty of room for that. You could probably even fit in a text or two. The nice thing about the bag is that it's long so if you have books in there there is always extra room at the top, perfect to put in a couple of folded up tshirts etc.

Hey thanks!!! I really like both but hte incase is alot cheaper... So this means I could splurge on a nice sleeve to protect also... Thanks alot!!

What do you all think about the Axio - Hardsleeve? I like it alot and think it would do great, but wondering what you all think. I dont have a link because www.axio-usa.com is java. Sorry.

When I go to school or wherever, I place my iBook into this sleeve and then just stick it inside this messenger bag along with my books. Works like a charm and no worry about your computer getting damaged.

12" Sleeve - approx. $20-30 (I purchased for $30)
JanSport messenger bag - approx $30-60 (I purchased in Manchester, UK for £20 I believe)

The messenger bag is pretty spacious too, holds all my books for all 8 of my periods.
