Other I need help deciding what iPhone to get!

so it’s that time of the year when it’s time to get a new phone. My 12 month subscription is coming to an end and I’ll have to return the phone. I had the upgrade plan which means I can return my iPhone 7 and get a newer phone. But I don’t want to pay monthly anymore. I’ll from now on just pay for the phone cash so I can switch phones whenever I want and not be in any form of subscription.

I’m having a hard time deciding what phone to get though. I never thought I would say this l, but phones have more or less came to a stage for me where I really don’t need anything more. The iPhone X is an absolute no for me. I’ll never buy it as long as it has a notch. iPhone 8 Plus I’be been thinking about, but I’m thinking it’s unessecary for me compared to just getting a 7 plus? I love the material for the 7 plus and hate the glass back because I KNOW I’ll drop the phone and break the glass eventually. Also wireless charging is something I’ll never use anyways.

I don’t know either of they are planning on releasing an iPhone 9 with the design of iPhone 8. Not sure at all what to do. What would y’all do? I really wish they would create a notchless phone...

I must have overlooked that part as far as it being an actual requirement in what you mentioned earlier. iPhone 8 might still be a better way to go given that it's newer and more powerful and would at least be somewhat of an upgrade over the 7 that you have now. True. But I’m worried about the glass back. And I don’t really think I need the extra performance. Just getting a 7 plus will be a upgrade as well. This upgrade program is that you are supposed to upgrade your phone every 12 months. Perhaps there is a way to continue paying the same monthly fee and keep this til September and see what new phones comes out but I’m not sure.

Between the 7 and 7 plus, I think the plus is a no brainer. You seem to have narrowed it down to those 2, anyways. 7 plus is still a very solid phone, and will be for a few more years at least.

I was in a similar position and opted for the 8 plus

If you are going to get the X I would recommend waiting till the next one is announced and see what improvement are made.
Quiet a few friends of mine who bought the X, returned it because of faults/unhappyness with it.

Because wasting the upgrade plan for the same phone is dumb. Just buy your 7 outright and keep it. I'm 100% they allow you to do so.

Quiet similar situation but I just need to upgrade my 6S. Battery is no longer good and really showing some age.

Also I will be going around the world in the summer and blogging about it and need a phone with a good camera and battery to be better than what I have now at 83% capacity. Will probably opt for the 8

I don’t think any upgrade plan actually “forces” you to return the phone. There are way forward with other solutions. Have a read of their terms properly and understand what your options are before wasting it for another 12 months.

I went from the 7+ to the 8+ and I love the 8+. Compared to the 7+, it has a better camera and the cpu is extremely fast. I didn’t think I’d notice a big difference but I did the second I got it out of the box. Wireless charging is a plus, and the battery is much better for me on the 8+. I’d probably wait till the fall just to see if anything good comes out and if not, the 8+ will likely be cheaper

The reality is, the iPhone 8 is the last iPhone with touch ID. Apple is clearly moving forward with Face ID, which the notch will most likely be here for another two, maybe three years until they can figure out another way to conceal the hardware or reduce the notch altogether. You saying you will _never_ buy an iPhone with a notch, the new iPhone 8 technically could be your last iPhone depending how long Apple retains the notch around.

Regardless, my suggestion would be the iPhone 8. It Has the latest hardware specifications, it’s very similar to the iPhone 7 as you are aware, but with the addition of wireless charging, true tone display, and if you are opt for the Plus model, of course you will have the dual camera, larger battery life, 1080 P display, and augmented reality capabilities.

not much different. I have a 8 plus, but I like wireless charging, and I think glass
phones are beautiful, even though I only see it when I take off the case.

that's what I did. 6s camera is good enough, you save lot that you can spend on your trip and you don't have to worry that much about your phone while travelling.

When you're 90 years old and look back at your iPhone possession life, will it have made any difference at all that you always were one year behind the current tech? Of course not. Just get a 7 or 7 plus & be done with it. And from now on --- always stay a generation or more behind. It's the only sane choice in the long run.

And another tip: Never buy a new iPhone until April or so until the .3 iOS update drops. Why subject yourself to beta testing first release buggy software? Patience rewards.

And another tip: Never upgrade the OS beyond the version it initially came with. Definitely upgrade the . releases, but never the next number.

Take another look at the 8, it’s a nice phone. Do you use your phone without a case? You could try the clear cases, that’s what I use with my phones, so I can still actually enjoy the look of my phone .

I have a yearly contract too and I could keep my phone and pay it off, but I rather upgrade yearly. If you love what you have, just pay it off if that’s an option. I went with the X. I’ve already gotten used to the notch, although it does look funny.

I went with an 8 plus after having a 6 I found the screen far too small , the x seems gimmicky also I hate the notch - very un apple like in design - SJ would never have allowed that out of the labs..

The battery life and camera do it for me on the 8+

I don’t agree with a lot of this. So I’m supposed to keep my iPhone 8+ on ios11 forever? If I used your theory and had a 7+, I’d still be on ios10 and subject to meltdown and spectre. Some people are so terrified to update their phones. I definitely think you should consider staying on the 3rd or so update, but to say not even updating once is best seems counter productive. One of the biggest selling points on an iPhone is that it offers 4-5 years of support. So next year when the next spectre or meltdown type issue comes out, you would really advise 8/x owners to just stay on ios11 and hope for the best?

It seems to me like the updating paranoia is overblown. I’m sure the 6 and 6+ probably suck on ios11 due to 1gb of ram. The 8+/x with their 3gb should easily be able to run iOS 14. When iOS 15 comes out, maybe then we will see that they’re limited and not worth the update. I can’t imagine any world where these new phones can’t run ios12 or 13, though.

As for waiting until the .3 comes out, I can’t stand behind that either. I’ve had my phone since launch and so has my wife. Any minor issues we have had are more than offset by the months of enjoyment we have gotten from the phone.

Not necessarily. The iPhone 8 is a considerable purchased for the OP, which will easily be supported through iOS for likely 4/5 years. I am also willing to believe the notch will dissipate and/or Apple will have some other type of hardware functionality concealing the sensors and Face ID hardware under the display, eliminating the notch altogether.

I like your recommendation but isn't there a pattern with Apple that they will keep an older model and restrict it to a smaller memory capacity i.e. 64 Gigs versus having the option to select 64 or 128? I am still holding onto my 7plus and patiently waiting for the September announcement. I do hope Apple steps up their game with specs and less focus on emojis....
