Problem is I'm highly design challenged! The logo's just need to say the name of the site and and one graphic - not complicated...I have several of these to do and would like to do it myself.

This reminds me of an ex-football player that went to a hotel room just to get his stuff back. It seemed simple enough but the execution did not work out that well.

The challenge of any logo designer is to produce a mark that is uncomplicated -- and does not infringe upon a bajillion other logos. As far as software goes, you already have the best for the task.

The obstacles you must surmount are the stated "highly design challenged" issue and the fact that you "would like to do it [your]self." If you don't care about uniqueness, you can select from (rather crude) public domain clip art. (http://www.clipartguide.com/_search_terms/logo.html) If you prefer to take a stab at it yourself (no pun intended), you risk coming up with something similar to someone else's logo. Depending on how novel the original is, you may face legal issues or receive a cease-and-desist order. Don't confuse uncomplicated with simple.

I beg to differ on the matter, photoshop can be used to make logo's and then pushed over to illustrator to save them.

ya and then you still need to re-trace then to make them into a vector? Not worth it IMO when you can start, and finish in one program. If it was as simple as bringing it over and hitting "save as" fine I would say use whatever program, but why use 2 when you only need the 1? You spend lest say 30 seconds making a square, circle and triangle in Photoshop, then have to bring it into illy as a raster and then trace it to save it as a vector, OR you take that same 30 seconds to draw a square, circle and triangle in illy, hit save and be done in that 30 seconds. Doesn't seem to make much sense to me, but to each their own I guess. I know what I'll use to design though haha

Try this. It's extremely easy to use, pretty fast forward and can deliver professional results within minutes:

Sweet. why do some people expect something for nothing? Or to be able to cut corners, negating high end skills of professionals such as myself!? Grrr.

I'll give you some advice... Whatever people say, logos are easy to create you should be able to get an awesome polished concept out within an hour.

Personally I think you need to make it colourful and lively by adding gradients, lensflares, dropshadows and the "wetfloor" look. That would look sweet.

Just do it as a wordmark in gimp because this will make it easier to create as an animated GIF. The font I would suggest is Arial or a thick slab-serif font like sketch Rockwell.

 Oh Em Gee

Sorry wrong way of creating logos. Illustrator first, Photoshop for FX.

Doing it the way you suggest *can* be done but it creates MASSIVE issue later on, for the record I'm guessing you're self-taught because most professionals would never consider doing it that way.

The only time I ever use Photoshop for Logos if I am doing a quick mockup or it the client wants an effect added to the artwork.

Don't forget the vector compliment to GIMP, Inkscape. I've been trying to release myself from the stragglehold that is Adobe for a while and I think now I finally have the freetime to actually learn the UI. Remember the tool doesn't make the artist.
