everyone’s opinion is formed by their own personal experience...
having said that,
Avoid all Microsoft Surface devices
Consider the Dell XPS
Seriously consider the newest possible business-model ThinkPad that fits your budget. They’re built like tanks, last forever, and most components are user-serviceable/replaceable. you could find a used model in near-mint condition for far less than $1000 that will be more than adequate for your needs.

What 100% Schengen laptop do you recommend? When the Thinkpad = IBM
But lately, security has me concerned.
A shorter answer would be to the question, "what's right with the new surface laptops?"What's wrong with the new surface laptops?
Try Parallels VM??My current setup isn't working out, and I need to buy a windows laptop to run certain software. I understand I can run my MacBook pro in boot camp, but it just isn't practical for me to do it full time.
Looking to spend around $1000. I have always heard good things about dell xps 13. Aesthetically I like the Thinkpad it is cool in a old-school way. A lot of sites seem to recommend the surface laptop, but I will be damned if I buy a suede laptop, that is the dumbest thing ever.
Any other ones I am missing? Looking to get out as cheap as possible for passing performance. This will mostly be used to run antiquated software that takes little to no power, and to keep me entertained in hotels.
I can respect if someone is concerned about Lenovo and security. I have concluded that for myself, the risk (real or imagined) is acceptable. But we all must do what we feel is best for our situation. When the Thinkpad = IBM

Tried Surface Pro but no way.
Chromebook it has too be Windows 7 or 10?
use a Mac at home then?
Was about to suggest Lenovo 920. My husband bought one around Christmas for $1099 (including pen) during Best Buy sale to replace his 2012 13” MBA and is really liking it. He had bought a MBP and then played around with the 920 at Best Buy and decided to return the MBA unopened. A very nice machine. He doesn’t have additional expense of buying Parallels and Windows now to run his accounting software for his business so it was a good switch for him. I’m considering the same for my 2014 MBA.If anyone cares I ended up with a Lenovo yoga 910. Windows resale value is terrible. It came with a receipt $1300 last year, and I got it for $450.
Was pretty close to just buying a entry level xps 13, but this fell in my lap.
Pretty nice machine so far. It is doing it's job well, and I must say I think it runs Photoshop better then my 2015 Macbook pro.
Still really do not care for windows at all, but it is less relavent these days because I do the majority of my computing on my phone.
Not as good as Apple support, but ways better than Lenovo support. How is Razer's customer support?
Lenovo X1 Carbon is a nice laptop.
