Memory errors. I don't think the iPad has enough memory to support multitasking. I've already gotten some Low Memory errors when I have too many browser windows open and then try to launch a game. I have to close some of the browser windows for the game to run.

Love the iPad, but they should have added more memory.

That is my one complaint about the ipad. I hope it is not an issue with os 4.0.

If I understand it correctly, the multi-tasking in OS4 mostly just saves the state of an app so that it reloads to the same point when you returns to it. This is why Apple claims that it will not severely affect performance, and why some people say that it is not "real" multi-tasking.

Is this wrong?

It is partly true, but apps that need to run in the background (Pandora, apps that download stuff, navigation apps, voip apps, and a few others) can run their tasks in the background while you use other apps.

That combined with Push notifications and local notifications will allow for a much more flexible platform. While it is not 'true' multitasking like your mac or PC it works well for iPhone OS.

When I sync, it ask me if I want to send info to Apple for development. I always look at the files, and it shows that a number of games have cause a 'crash' due to memory problems. Don't have the details here at work, but I wonder if it would be good to post the worst offenders here.

Probably a good idea to email or report the problem to the developer first. Most developers are looking for feedback so they can fix their product - if they don't know about it, they can't fix it.

Good point, and I always check them first then send em off.

So, if Apple claims it won't severly affect performance, that means it will slightly affect performance, which means, I may see more Low Memory errors (since I'm already getting some).

Which Apps are you seeing these problems in? Is it just a notification or do your Apps stop working?

Some Apps (for example "We Rule") seem to display Low Memory Notifications to the user and then carry on without any trouble. Presumably in this case the OS is able to clear out enough memory so the App can work as normal. I'd say that the user shouldn't be shown these sort of notifications as they don't effect their use of the device.

As a software developer I can tell you 256 mb is plenty of room. People have been brainwashed into thinking they need 2Gb to run an OS or any decent program.

The XBOX ran on 64mb of memory and that has much higher resource requirements then multitasking a couple simple apps. The BIG nintendo DS games use 128mb of space total, most are only 8-16mb in size.

It's all about the quality of code thats put out there. Multitasking pandora, aim and skype are no brainers given they don't need much.

But surely you have some idea how advances in technology require faster processors and more ram, right? Even browsing the internet takes a lot more memory than it did ten years ago.

It does not take as much as you think, especially when your not bogged down with flash and other plugins.

What does take memory is caching lots of data, like graphics and animations in games. Also caching websites, so they load faster the next time takes more memory, which is probably why safari reloads pages alot.

Yes browsing today requires more power and memory then 10 years ago, but 10 years ago we were doing it with slower processors and less then 256 mb of memory. As a matter of fact we were doing ALOT of things really well inside of 128mb of memory when it came to productivity apps.

The most common problem?

Apple not being able to make enough to supply the ever increasing demand world wide. Lack of stock will be 'the most common problem'.

It has nothing to do with memory. The issue is most developers didn't actually have access to an iPad during their app development. There's only so much debugging you can do with the simulator. Now that the iPad is released, I expect you will see the apps become much more stable over the next few months.

I predict Apple will re-envoke and old Mac OS control panel for the iPad :

"the Virtual Memory Control Panel"

Bold: Ummm. WHAT!? If you don't think the iPad has enough memory, then how come the iPhone is getting multitasking; a device that pales in comparison in memory to the iPad.

4.0 is not even out yet, people have no clue what type of features Apple is likely to be implementing to handle memory issues during multitasking, and we've already got some speculating about what the "most common problem" will be.

Hey, can anyone tell me what the winning numbers are gonna be for the upcoming MegaMillions lottery drawing?

Both have 256mb or RAM. iPad requires more resources, therefore iPhone has an advantage in this regard.

As for me, I just want them to fix Safari. Tabs reloading all over the place in there. Can't even switch from one tab to another to check something without my other page reloading half the time. Really annoying when filling out web forms. Cache it!

... worn out home buttons. Double pressing that button when you want to switch to another program means it's going to get a real pounding!
