As a software developer I can tell you 256 mb is plenty of room. People have been brainwashed into thinking they need 2Gb to run an OS or any decent program.

The XBOX ran on 64mb of memory and that has much higher resource requirements then multitasking a couple simple apps. The BIG nintendo DS games use 128mb of space total, most are only 8-16mb in size.

It's all about the quality of code thats put out there. Multitasking pandora, aim and skype are no brainers given they don't need much.
Brainwashed?? Umm.. no. All one has to do is have a quick look in the Activity Monitor in OS X to see how much of a memory hog the OS and other apps are. I dare you to not go crazy while trying to run any recent model Mac on only 256MB ram.

And Skype? That thing is a huge resource hog in OS X. Try running video... tell me how long it takes before your fans kick into overdrive.

People can't help it but to think they need more ram, since the only experiences we've got are from using our computers. It's true if the code is clean and efficient the apps can run better, but try telling that to the thousands of developers who write sloppy code.

Bold: Ummm. WHAT!? If you don't think the iPad has enough memory, then how come the iPhone is getting multitasking; a device that pales in comparison in memory to the iPad.

Learn more, then you might not make such silly comments. Only the 3Gs is getting multitasking.

But the iPhone OS is not the same thing. That's what people need to understand.

Yep, I agree.. it's just tough to wrap our heads around it after the many years of our machines becoming more and more memory dependent.

However, considering how cheap ram is these days.. Apple could have easily put at least 512MB in there.

It will certainly be interesting to see how well the new feature will perform.

Memory errors. I don't think the iPad has enough memory to support multitasking. I've already gotten some Low Memory errors when I have too many browser windows open and then try to launch a game. I have to close some of the browser windows for the game to run.

Love the iPad, but they should have added more memory.

What Browser are you using when this happens?

As already said, the new APIs solve the performance and memory problems (watch the OS 4.0 keynote for more info).

But it's worthwhile noting that my trusty old iPhone 3G can receive an email, send a text, play music, push info from other apps and have several websites loading and being viewed at the same time. I'm sure the newest device with the newest operating system will be just fine.

Sent from my trusty old mulitasking iPhone 3G.

4.0 is not even out yet, people have no clue what type of features Apple is likely to be implementing to handle memory issues during multitasking, and we've already got some speculating about what the "most common problem" will be.

The beta is out, so developers do have a pretty good idea.

my prediction is that nobody knows jack about the new OS and its a waste of your energy even thinking about it

blah, I was beat to it.

Beta = beta. cant compare apples to oranges.
