Isn’t the iPhone X just f/2.2?

No wide angle? So then the iPhone Xs will capture more on the sides right?

Call me stupid but I MAY UPGRADE for this feature...

Depends on how much I can get for my X

Where does it say wide angle?

It's called a wide-angle lens to make distinction from the telephoto lens. It does not suggest that the focal length is smaller than the previous generation. It it were, the actual focal length would have been noted in the specs.

Also, the screen size is irrelevant to the capturing ability.

Well what I’m saying is that will the new Xs show more stuff on each side of the photo than the X.

Like if you got me and my buddy in the selfie on the iPhone X, would the Xs include the trees and bushes next to me since it wide angle. Like it captures more stuff on the sides (hence WIDE angle)

It should capture more on then side because of the big screen

Is that right? Like if I get the Xs Max will I get more in the pic? For selfies? Since it’s got the bigger screen?

And I'm saying that, no, it is not likely that this would happen.

In photography, "wide" lens generally refers to a lens with an equivalent focal length less than 35mm. iPhone X's rear wide camera has the equivalent focal length of 28mm, while the front camera is 32mm, both qualifying for the "wide" moniker. Competitors have used lenses with shorter focal length, but it still doesn't mean Apple doesn't get to call the iPhone lenses "wide". Thus, you should not assume that the cameras on the XS became "wider" just based on the spec sheet describing the lenses as being "wide".

It’s a 32 mm (full frame equiv) focal length lens, same as in the X. That’s considered “wide angle” btw.

Everyone calls the 52mm (full frame equiv) a tele lens but in the world of photography it’s just a “normal” focal length lens. Similar to the same fov as the human eye.

I don’t understand the technicals but basically what youre saying is that the Xs is not any wider than the X for selfies.

Well that sucks. I had REALLY gotten my hopes up. I’d have paid probably

The X has a selfie lens with a focal length equivalent to a 32 mm lens. That would be considered wide angle.

So, move along. Nothing to see here.

Quick q:

When you say 32mm lens, does that mean the camera captures a photo 32mm wide? That would be only 3.2 centimeters

I guess what I’m trying to understand what determines how much you get on the sides.

Like if I had a 42mm lens or a 52 mm lens I’m assuming I’d get more in the selfie on the sides than a 32mm lens.

Why doesn’t Apple add more millimeters to make the photos wider?

Like I know Samsung has wide selfies. So instead of doing 32mm why doesn’t Apple do 42 mm so we can get more.

I’m just saying bc every selfie of mine ends up looking not as nice bc it isn’t wide like the Samsung.

Now the Samsung selfie camera is wide but I hate the end result in terms of color and it just seems somewhat inferior to iPhone.

If all Apple would do is add some millimeters to the camera it would perfect for me. Like the perfect selfie camera.

The mm number for the lens refers to the focal length, not the size of the photo. The smaller (hence shorter) it is, the wider (field of view, that is) it is. You might want to take a look at this table.

http://www.jeffreysward.com/editorials/lenscov.htm

The "long (36mm)" value shows how "wide" in terms of angle that a photo will cover when shooting with a lens of certain focal length. You'll notice that the 28mm lens can do about 65 degrees, while the 32mm one can do about 59. That 6 degrees difference is why I shoot selfies with the rear camera, personally.

That’s not the size of the photo the lens captures. It’s the focal length and less (like say 25mm) is wider than more.
Why Apple doesn’t use a wider lens on the front no one but Apple knows.
One thing for sure, a wider lens distorts a person face more (for example makes their nose and forehead look too large) when used close to the person ( like a arms length selfie)

I see. So if I’m looking for wider selfies, I need LESS mm for the focal length. Not more.

So a 22mm would give me wider selfies than 32

Dang that sucks. There’s gotta be an algorithm that the software can do to resize the face and nose to make not distorted and normal.

I know it probably sounds like I’m making this a big deal, but I do feel like the selfie camera can be GREATLY improved, not in terms of quality, color, and all that.

But the distance and shape of the photo and it could just look nicer in terms of dimensions. Like a normal photo and not a selfie photo.

You do make a good point. Apple's TrueDepth data might be processed through Neural Network / Machine Learning and applied to the photos in the future to correct the distortion, perhaps. But sadly, that is not happening today. Who knows? It might be a feature in the next iPhone when it goes triple lens and the new addition is a super-wide lens.

For now, though, I suppose the only realistic remedy is to purchase an aftermarket add-on lens if you're sticking with an iPhone.
