I really can't justify ordering a cheese burger. Short answer: don't buy one.

Hey man. Leave the cheeseburger out of this. :p

And to the OP. Those are some pretty lame reasons not to want a iPad if you ask me. No horizontal dock. Cry me a river. Can't justify taking it out without a laptop? So like if you run to the docs office (pick one then) where you know your going to be waiting and your wanting to bust out the Laptop instead of an iPad? ok.......

Me too. 40% of me DESPERATELY wants one. I hate the idea of looking at someone elses brand new iPad. I hate the thought of giving-in and buying one in a few months when they're no longer 'new'.

But 60% of me knows that it'll be fun to play with for a while and then it'll sit at home unused. My iPhone slips in my pocket. If I'm taking a bag I may as well shove my MacBook Pro in it (with ALL my files/apps/movies etc etc).

Topic has been hashed and rehashed to death already. You don't want it, then don't buy it. If you do, go for it. There is always the option to wait and try it out in the store first.

Well maybe . . . just maybe. . . . Someone likes all of the attention :p

Uh . . . I know I paid my rent on time . . . but I still can't justify that action

Really?
I'm buying an iPad just because I have $250 giftcard... I'm not paying $500+ for a tablet ;)

Different people have different priorities in life and calling someone's priorities "are drastically wrong" is well... wrong

The guy was kidding, obviously.

If you can't see the benefits of the iPad your life's priorities are drastically wrong.

This is just scary.

Sense of humor--is there an app for that? The first poster quoted above is kidding, lighten up. He is making a little joke about the enthusiasm for iPad evident on Macrumors.

You shouldn't have to convince yourself you need an iPad. Actually most don't need an iPad it's more of a want. Personally I don't need to have one but I can see myself using it on a daily basis and I want one. Forget about needing it, you just have to figure if you want it bad enough and that should be easy to figure out.

I'm wondering if others are having the same issues. I like the idea of the iPad and I'm sure its a great device for some but I'm wondering if Apple missed the mark a bit by limiting its usage. A couple of thoughts I had

- Why no horizontal dock. One of the things that I would frequently use the iPad for when its no in use would be a photo frame. The lack of a built-in slideshow app and a horizontal dock. To me while this wouldn't be a main purpose it would give me another reason to buy the iPad because I think it would be the ultimate digital photo frame! I mean they could have integrated the photo frame app into .mac or facebook and it would have really been slick. I mean how many people have paid $100-200 on a digital photo frame?

- When leaving the house would you be comfortable with taking the iPad without a laptop? I'm not sure I can swallow the idea of not having full laptop capabilities. I think this is probably just a personal thing but I don't think I'd really use it outside the house very often...

With that being said I really think the iPad is a great household device. Something that can be used frequently. For someone into home entertainment it would make a great household appliance. Recipes, photos, video's, remote control when I'm hanging out somewhere without a TV but I think the could have made it even better if they weren't thinking of this as a larger iPhone/iPod touch...just my .02

Thoughts? Maybe OS 4 will add multi-tasking which will help it become a digital frame but I think the dock being portrait kills the feasibility of this?

Then Don't buy it, why should we have to justify a purchase to you, can we stop with these inane threads, if you don't need it, don't buy it whats so hard about that?

I will not consider one until the next iPhone OS comes out, hopefully with multitasking. If that OS enables multitasking on the current iPad, I might get one, otherwise, iPad 1.0 will bring up buyer's remorse.

In fairness, I think the OP is looking to weigh pros and cons and just asking for input. Maybe he/she wants to be enabled :) I don't think the OP is looking to bash or looking for justification from other folks

I'm not kidding at all. If you can't see all the different way this device can impact your life, it's a sign other thoughts may be of no value.

First off thanks for the few people who actually answered my question or had reasonable things to say...I appreciate it

Thank you! Maybe the title was the wrong thing to put but I come back to see all this bashing...man I must have hit a nerve...crazy stuff. I was mainly interested in invoking conversation about the devices usage and try to gauge where/how I would use it by asking how others are using it, I guess I failed at that.

- I'm not asking you to justify my purchase
- I'm not asking you to convince me
- I know I don't have to buy it
- Not trying to make lame reasons why I should or shouldn't buy one just trying to get some questions answered (which I did)

I'm thoroughly confused about the responses I received here...

It will work as a digital photo frame, just not horizontal.

THANKS...I don't know how I could have missed it I must have watched that a few times and didn't remember seeing that...thanks again...this in itself may tip the scales for me because I was going to buy a $100-200 digital photo frame already so I might as well put that money towards a iPad...which does a ton more

Yea I agree I think something with that large of screen should have multi-tasking...I mean I could use it on my iphone...

Then don't click on the thread buddy...your choice!

Good point, maybe that is how I need to think about it. Since its a new product and really a new category of product I may need to just own one before I understand how I could use it...

I might have felt that way 5 years ago about not having a laptop. But for 95% of people using laptops, it's just for simple stuff like surfing and listening to music and watching movies. Nothing hardcore. If you use a laptop for business, then I would say stick with your laptop. SJ said himself that this is a hybrid device.

I can see that but most of my data is on my laptop so why wouldn't I just grab it...if I'm in my living room why not turn on the tv to watch a movie...I can see doing that if I'm traveling though but again if I'm traveling I probably will want my laptop with Aperture on it so I can edit photos, edit videos....etc.

Did you start this thread in hopes of getting others to convince you to buy an iPad? Just curious . . .
Don't understand why one would need to "justify" making a purchase.
Again, that purchase decision is, and should be, in your hands alone.
No just trying to invoke some conversation about the device usage maybe I've missed some things?
Really you don't understand the process of 'justifying' a purchase. So you have a house full of stuff that you don't need or use? Maybe that is why this country is in the state its in...$500 isn't going to break the bank but its enough for me to justify the purchase
Yes it is my decision but doesn't hurt to ask others their opinion on a new device and device category...

If you can't see the benefits of the iPad your life's priorities are drastically wrong.
This is very funny...lol

My recommendation is to wait a couple of months so you don't get caught in the hype. Test it out at the store and pay attention to certain situations where you'd rather have an iPad. Weigh that against the price to see if it's something you really need.

There's nothing worse than making an expensive and irrational purpose which you may soon later regret.

Thanks I appreciate it...that is probably what I will do...let things play out a bit

Thanks,

I dunno, but really, it's up to you

If it weren't for the fact that there is no chance in heck of my parents letting me get an iPad... well, I doubt I would buy it myself. What is it more than a huge iPod Touch with a better-looking OS? If I went to an apple store, tried it out, and loved it, maybe I would, but still, it doesn't do much that macs and iPod Touches/iPhones don't already do. Besides having a huge (admittedly probably easier-to-use) screen. However, if I were, say, a college kid with not enough money for a higher-end computer, or was waiting for something a little more affordable to come out, then I would rush out and buy an iPad right now.
However, when it comes to you, like everyone else said... if you can't think of a reason it's worth $500 (at LEAST), don't buy it.

OP: I have a lot of trouble justifying it as well. I have a macbook, an asus eee netbook and an iphone. There's zero reason for me to have an ipad, so I certainly don't plan on buying Rev1.
