Oh, please. Yes, Apple brainwashed me, and all the rest of us, too.
By your logic, a 13" is no more portable than a 17", and the MacBook Air is just a complete waste of time at 3 lbs. compared to 4.5 lbs. MacBook Pro.
I have never walked down the street with my MBP 13" held in one hand from
the top like I have my iPad in the Apple case, and I never would. Also, try traveling across Europe with 3 times the weight in portable-computing-device and get back to me.
We all keep a phone in our pocket at all times, so I can't see your point about that. I only mentioned the iPhone because the poster had stated that he was looking for something in between his phone and laptop, and that is the iPad.
I said practical reasons. Walking around, outside of your house, with a 9.7" device isn't practical. Is it worthwhile? Probably, but still not practical.
The iPad SHOULD be an accessory to either an iPhone or a laptop, it is not either of those. It is its own device that doesn't compliment anything, the iPad is in no way a third device between an iPhone or laptop. It is an entirely new product that doesn't compliment any other product.
The way BlackBerry has thought of Bluetooth tethering for data and important information is something that Apple will have to do, but won't. I am sorry, but if I get an email on my iPhone or iPad I don't want to unlock the other device and see that email in my inbox. I have to refresh the mail list and hope it goes away. Sometimes it will stay there for hours for whatever reason. That is counterproductive.
Another example of a non-compliment issue I have, is productivity. It's cool everything may go to a "cloud" for storage. What isn't cool is half of the programs don't access Apple's own cloud storage. There is no other program on the iPhone or iPad, besides Pages which is iPad-only, that can access iWork.com. Great, so I work on a paper on my iPad, upload it to iWork.com and can't access it anywhere but an approved browser or a Mac. Every school or college I have been to uses Internet Explorer, an older version of it to, and iWork.com doens't work correctly. So I can't access my paper via iWork.com for school. I could go ahead and use MobileMe, but I would run into the same browser compatibility issue. All of this could be solved by using my iPhone or iPad as a storage device, but Apple won't allow that. There are apps for that though, but most of them are never updated to work with a program like Pages.
Those are just nitpicks of the iPad from my experience.
I do believe the portability of the iPad is greatly exaggerated by the vast majority of users on here. I own one, I know. I am not afraid to say that there are faults with my iPad, I am not loyal to Apple.
The other MAJOR issue I have with the iPhone/iPad is the lack of multiple push accounts. I have about 3-4 emails I need with push, because it really does matter when I respond. I can't do that with an iPhone or iPad.
Again, these issues won't happen with the average iPad/iPhone user, hence why I will be going with the BlackBerry/iPad combo until I can get my hands on a PlayBook.
Just my thoughts, everything I have stated in this thread is an opinion and should not be taken as a fact through myself.
Sorry if I misled people.
