If Apple comes out with the same iPad they already have, but smaller, it will be a good thing.

When BB announces what might be vaporware that they don't even have a real demo for, just CGI, on a platform that in my experience has been crap so far and with a hardware laundry list that may or may not matter, it might be a disaster.

If they do a nice job, good for them. I don't like the Android UI, so I won't get one, but if it can compete and makes Apple and everyone else step up their game, great, but looking at what they are offering, and the rumored price, i doubt that will happen, so yes, that seems like a bad move.

If all your tiny little mind can handle is to claim that this is a "fanboi" issue, then maybe you can't think deep enough to handle the discussion. That isn't our problem. It is yours.

Go to the BlackBerry thread, and see how many people are bashing the size. Come to this thread, and see how many people are praising the idea.

Fanyboyism is a problem, and it's not mine. I side with a manufacture if they produce good products. Both Apple and RIM produce great products. I have owned both, and am going to be purchasing another BlackBerry device.

RIM can't afford for the PlayBook to become vaporwear, so it will be released. The iPad wasn't demonstrated 6 months in advanced, I am sure the PlayBook will be demonstrated closer towards its release.

We can word play with the market term all day. The simple fact is Apple competitors are coming out with a 7" tablet. If they price them right they are going to give the ipad a run. I fully expect to see Apple release their own version of a 7" tablet.

I don't wear cargo pants so I don't plan to carry one around in my pants. I'm looking at it from a business, IT travel point of view. A 7" would fit perfect between my iphone and laptop.

I respect your viewpoint, and for the record, I wasn't suggesting that you personally wear cargo pants, but it has been a popular reasoning when these threads come up around here, the "pocket-ability" of a 7" iPad.

The thing is, though, that the current iteration of the iPad already fits perfectly between the iPhone and a laptop. In fact, when it was announced in January of this year, that is precisely where Apple had positioned it. Regarding portability...

iPhone: .25 lbs.
iPad: 1.5 lbs.
MacBook: 4.5 lbs. (for 13")

In the real world outside of these forums, I don't believe that anyone has ever walked out of the Apple Store having decided to NOT purchase the iPad because they thought, "it's too big and heavy"...

Am I the only one who remembers way back in April when the iPad was revolutionarily small, compact, and light, with a ridiculously powerful battery? :)

Is there a Blackberry thread about the PlayBook on this site where they don't like the size of it? I've gone to some BB forums and they all seem to be hyped over the PlayBook and it's size. So much to the point saying it's a day one purchase which I have no clue how they can say that without a real hands on demo. I've got my eye on it and waiting for it to be released to at least tech sites and hear more about the apps and price.

I agree about the Fanboyism and posted early in this thread. I don't care about brand. I care about what it's going to do for me and of course price :)

Apple literally brainwashes people. You aren't going to take your iPad out and about like you would an iPhone. The iPad is just as portable as a 13" MacBook, not more or less. You're not going to carry around your iPad through a school without a case or bag. There isn't one practical situation where the iPad is more portable than a notebook without an iPhone. The only thing would be laying on the couch, and that's about it.

Where I go with my iPad, my iPhone follows. So if I had a MacBook, I would take that with me as well and leave my iPad at home. That is exactly what the iPad is great at, a quick reference device at home. It's not really practical in real world applications...

I use the iPad to take notes in class, and would rather do so with a notebook.

There is two threads on this forum about the PlayBook that I know of. Both of which have critiques about its size and basically comparing it to the iPad.

I have the iPad, and I will most likely get this as well. So, I do not have a problem with fanboyism, this forum does. Rightfully expected though, it is titled "MacRumors".

Brand is impartial to me.

Gotcha:D I'm sure some would want to pocket it, but I'd be find carrying it around like a day planner or paperback book. Different strokes I guess.

I even called the iPad a big iPod which to an extent it is but I do see how it could be of some benefit to me. I'd just like it bigger than my iphone yet smaller than the current iPad

Ok thanks. I thought you were talking about on a blackberry forum and that sort of puzzled me. I fully know why it's being bashed here.

I don't have an iPad but think I've talked myself into getting one for work reasons but I'm willing to wait till next year to see if Apple releases a 7" or updates the current model and also the PlayBook along with a few others and buy what fits my needs.

I'm not brand loyal.

this may be your opinion, but to make a blanket statement that the ipad is no less portable than a macbook is silly.

But are they the same people? Just because people buy Apple, doesn't mean they are in complete agreement with each other. If you find any single poster who argues for one size in one thread and bashes it in another, THEN you can accuse that single poster of fanboyism. But unless you find a poster doing that, what you are seeing is simply evidence that not all Apple fans think alike.

Oh, please. Yes, Apple brainwashed me, and all the rest of us, too. :)

By your logic, a 13" is no more portable than a 17", and the MacBook Air is just a complete waste of time at 3 lbs. compared to 4.5 lbs. MacBook Pro.

I have never walked down the street with my MBP 13" held in one hand from the top like I have my iPad in the Apple case, and I never would. Also, try traveling across Europe with 3 times the weight in portable-computing-device and get back to me.

We all keep a phone in our pocket at all times, so I can't see your point about that. I only mentioned the iPhone because the poster had stated that he was looking for something in between his phone and laptop, and that is the iPad.

You could say exactly the same to the guys who use this reasoning for 7" vs 9.7" ipad. Tbh though, i cant think of a single thing that could house a 9.7inch and not a 13inch MB. Really the only option you have are bags and rucksacks in terms of portability.

so you're implying that a 7" ipad will (should) have limited functionality? if this is the case, then the market becomes even smaller.

No, that's not what I implied. I said each device would have its own purpose. Sometimes size itself forms the function. But I think what we see in the current version of the iPad will serve as the base functional foundation for all future iPads.

Just for the record I want the iPad to come in a 13" to 15" (ish) widescreen size and support 1920x1080 :)

i use a small sling pack if i need to carry my ipad in a bag - no way my macbook would fit it there. most of the time i just carry it around. i wouldn't do that with my laptop. the other thing regarding portability is battery life. i get a couple of hours on my macbook and about 6-8 hours on the ipad.

i can understand this, but that brings me back to my original point. apple would be cannibalizing sales from themselves and this reduces the economy of scales for both products. i don't think there are a lot of people who are solely on the fence because the ipad is too big. it may be a welcomed option, but not the sole deciding factor. this goes the same for the android, blackberry and whatever other tablets that are out there. people aren't going to choose these devices over the ipad because of the screen size. this would be like saying i'm getting the evo over the iphone because of the screen size.

I said practical reasons. Walking around, outside of your house, with a 9.7" device isn't practical. Is it worthwhile? Probably, but still not practical.

The iPad SHOULD be an accessory to either an iPhone or a laptop, it is not either of those. It is its own device that doesn't compliment anything, the iPad is in no way a third device between an iPhone or laptop. It is an entirely new product that doesn't compliment any other product.

The way BlackBerry has thought of Bluetooth tethering for data and important information is something that Apple will have to do, but won't. I am sorry, but if I get an email on my iPhone or iPad I don't want to unlock the other device and see that email in my inbox. I have to refresh the mail list and hope it goes away. Sometimes it will stay there for hours for whatever reason. That is counterproductive.

Another example of a non-compliment issue I have, is productivity. It's cool everything may go to a "cloud" for storage. What isn't cool is half of the programs don't access Apple's own cloud storage. There is no other program on the iPhone or iPad, besides Pages which is iPad-only, that can access iWork.com. Great, so I work on a paper on my iPad, upload it to iWork.com and can't access it anywhere but an approved browser or a Mac. Every school or college I have been to uses Internet Explorer, an older version of it to, and iWork.com doens't work correctly. So I can't access my paper via iWork.com for school. I could go ahead and use MobileMe, but I would run into the same browser compatibility issue. All of this could be solved by using my iPhone or iPad as a storage device, but Apple won't allow that. There are apps for that though, but most of them are never updated to work with a program like Pages.

Those are just nitpicks of the iPad from my experience.

I do believe the portability of the iPad is greatly exaggerated by the vast majority of users on here. I own one, I know. I am not afraid to say that there are faults with my iPad, I am not loyal to Apple.

The other MAJOR issue I have with the iPhone/iPad is the lack of multiple push accounts. I have about 3-4 emails I need with push, because it really does matter when I respond. I can't do that with an iPhone or iPad.

Again, these issues won't happen with the average iPad/iPhone user, hence why I will be going with the BlackBerry/iPad combo until I can get my hands on a PlayBook.

Just my thoughts, everything I have stated in this thread is an opinion and should not be taken as a fact through myself.

Sorry if I misled people.

I totally disagree with this point, the one thing that majorly annoys me about the iPad is that if you want to keep it updated you need a computer. If the iPad was not a product on it's own I would not have bought one.

This may be your opinion but I don't agree at all. The iPad is way more portable than a MBP. The only time I really don't take it is tasks I know I will not use it all (such as grocery shopping).

Is your issue push accounts or exchange accounts? You can have more than one push account but not more of one type at the moment. I believe in iOS 4.2 you will be able to have more than on exchange account but I have not tested this yet.

On tethering, the iPad 3G really is way more convenient for the average user. I'm sure this is what Apple is considering in their target. However, it would be enormously helpful if the data plan could be shared between an iPhone and iPad 3G. However, I don't expect AT&T to ever offer that.

Finally, not directed to you, I think an iPad 7" would be a huge mistake. Everyone is quoting the announcement of 7" by competitors as to why Apple should do this. As I recall competitors offered tablets and netbooks long before Apple and those all failed miserably. Wait eight months and when all the 7" tablets fail in the market let's revisit this idea.

If Apple comes out with a 7-inch tablet, it will be a good thing...

When BlackBerry announces a 7-inch tablet, it's a horrible product and business move.

I see it now, as long as it has an Apple as a logo, people will love it!

I get it.

Thanks, Capt'n Over-simplification.

I don't knw to be honest about the logisitics behind such a move. As someone mentioned in a similar thread, there's all sorts of supply issues that creep up with every SKU, and considering the difficulties faced in timely supply of both the iPad and the iPhone 4, I don't know if I would take the risk. Not at least in the next 12 months. Maybe a little further down the road when manufacturing issues are smoothed out.

Just that fact alone make it an accessory to a computer. If you want to update your iPad, you need to have a computer that accesses iTunes. I would think, however I am probably wrong, that RIM would implement OTA updates for their tablet. That way you technically never need a computer.

The iPad is great alone, but it should also compliment the iPhone which it doesn't at all.

Great, I disagree with your opinion. That's the good thing about the Internet, you can actually disagree with people.

My issue is with having ANY email I want pushed to my phone without forwarding everything. BlackBerry does this for every single one of their devices, Apple can't do it with one.

You realise these same companies who are producing 7" tablets have/are also producing 10" tablets. You think a 10" andoid/blackberry tablet is going to be any more of a commercial success than a 7" model?

Its likely any tablet of any size is going to pale in comparison (in regards to devices sold) to one developed by apple because of the brand name amongst so many other things. Also IIRC when publishing their financial results, Apple typically catogorises many devices under the same umbrella i.e. the ipod range. Looking at things from their perspective, Apple will sell more ipads with both a 7" and 9.7" models than with just one available model.

I think a 7" would be cool but not to replace the current size. more as an addition too. just to make the ipad start at a lower entry price to get it more mainstream then it already is. but ill still buy the 9.7" v. 2.

What's the point? The whole selling point for the iPad is the bigger screen over the iPod. This will just make it an iPod still not small enough to fit in a pocket and prone to theft anyway.

The 7" iPad may be perfect for your needs but not mine. I like BIG screens. Not small ones.

BlackBerry does push for email by requiring you to use their BIS or BES service. If that's want you want fine, but having to get and PAY for a service just to get email is an extreme disadvantage in my view. And I have used BlackBerry in the past before the iPhone. Never understood what anyone saw in them. Wanting a device to be more like a BlackBerry is not something I would want.
