But, my initial point was that I may end up getting the apple watch (probably not the Edition, if it's the prices people think) because I can't seem to find another one that is not too bulky and still has decent capabilities and reviews.

Before choosing style, it would help if you knew what you'd like a smartwatch to be able to do. In other words, what do you really want one for?

If it's just notifications, that allows much more choice in devices.

If it's as a standalone wrist phone, there are quite a few such GSM devices, but they likely integrate with an iPhone very poorly.

If it's for wrist apps, there are various smartwatches out there.

If it's for tight integration with the smartphone, that limits things.

If you're an iPhone user and need NFC payment capability on the watch, I think that you're currently bound to Apple.

Although others have tried doing it before Apple, now the idea of an elegant smartwatch is popular with the press. It'll be interesting to see what kind of competing watches show up. I'd love to see someone come out with an iOS compatible, round gold-colored semi-smartwatch for a good price.

I think what I want most is a watch with notifications and apps, including some health apps. I would like it to be able to integrate with the iPhone, but don't care about NFC payment or being a wrist phone (though the idea of talking into my wrist amuses me a little in a Get Smart sort of way).

The hood
I'm guessing the actual mechanism will be patented, so Apple can choose whether or not to license "official" replacement bands. They may want to keep all the band market to themselves. No one has yet reverse engineered the MagSafe connector (at least not on a commercial scale).

You know they will. Made for Apple Watch certification will be just another revenue stream for them.

There don't seem to be any options right now, really. The rose gold Apple Watch is beautiful, but I don't see myself spending $3k for a wearable electronic that I would want to replace after a couple of years (six kids = much bills).

Apple may win this round for lack of other options.

You will not find any watches out there for smart wrists. Especially "smart" watches (which imo aren't that smart if they can't live without being tethered to a smart phone). Hell it's hard enough to find a nice normal watch that fits small wrists. I should know! I am in that park too.

PS just seeing that watch on nothing but guys during the promo, it still looked large on a man. I hate to see what kind of wrists can make that look elegant.
