I really wish that ringtones will be enabled soon. I am getting tired of all the iPhone owners having the same ringtones. Heck, I am even willing to pay for it. Just give us that option!

(And no, I don't want to hack my phone)

I just want something official from Apple that has no question as to whether it will cause problems further down the line. Seriously, if they had an update for custom ringtones, that would be the last update I would really care about for quite some time. The phone has tons of stuff other phones don't except for the basic thing that all other phones have.

I am waiting for Apple to relase the update that will enable ringtones through iTunes. Funny thing is that people expect the custom ringtones on the iPhone. And when I tell them iPhone doesn't have it. They are like, . And the next few words are, "But doesn't it sync with iTunes?" And I have to tell them although it syncs with iTunes and play all the songs, the songs can not be used as ringtones. I feel kind of stupid everytime I have to repeat that.

i dont understand why apple is not releasing ringtones, i would think that with all the hacking going on, we would have seen ringtones by now. Apple could have made a lot of money by already.

They're definitely on the way... we know that from screenshots.

My guess is that Apple is inking deals with labels in the iTunes catalog to make their music available for a discounted price.

If you can buy a whole song right now for $0.99, then it seems like ringtones will be cheaper?

Either way, the ability is definitely coming....

Yeah, well. If you've ever used a Cell phone from any other carrier, you know that just because you can load songs onto the phone doesn't mean that they will allow you to use them as ringtones. My Saumsung phone from Verizon has a microSD slot that you can load and play MP3s from, but you can't use them as ringtones. The reason is because it would canibalize their $3.99 a piece ringtone download business which brings in HUGE returns for them with virtually no overhead. This is neither a new nor a unique problem for an MP3-playing cell phone to be unable to use songs as ringtones.

Since you can't load songs as ringtones BUT there is no avenue for buying custom ringtones through AT&T, I'd be willing to bet that that was one of those things that Apple and AT&T couldn't agree to before the launch of the iPhone. AT&T wants you to have to pay $3-$4 for a ringtone, Apple thinks they should be free. Apparently this argument hasn't been settled yet. I'd bet Apple will prevail soon.

WM devices make the trusty Iphone look like a kids toy for ages 5 years old and up .I just slice and dice MP3's , drop them in the ring tones folder located in window directory .If I need to move them around copy & past were needed .Pretty simple really :)

Wow, I'm eBaying my iphone and getting a WMphone NOW, thanks to your post.

Anyhow, that would be a nice thing. iFuntastic is funtastic and all, but a waste of my time. C'mon Apple. Ringtones and a to-do list.

Dont forget that primitive Copy & Past WM has :D
I do wish you well on your simple ringtone quest.

Excellent. I'm very happy for you that your phone choice reflects your desire to violate copyright laws for your own personal enjoyment.

You must be very proud.
Such hostility....I could go on yet we would be wasting time chatting about your lack of reality but feel free to convince the potential viewer of this thread your point for I find it very entertaining .I will now step back ;)

no need to go on. If someone said that to me and I wasn't infringing on any of the artists' rights, I would say so and leave it at that.

It's funny how some company's are really touchy about copy write .Lets take TIVO for instance .If you were to use there logo as your avatar they would be all over it. Ive seen it happen .Jeeps logo's and the name can be thrown around the net like no tomorrow with Jeep not making a big deal of it.
Another example,
Apple was all over WM 3rd party builders in XDA forums for the iphone look alike today screen plug-in yet HTC is all over Apple for scratching into the HTC Touch being the touchscreen thing.Pretty amazing on how the world works.

Wait, so if I take my CD (that I paid for) and make a MP3 out of it (or AAC), I can't legally take that same MP3 and dice it up to use as a ring tone? So I need to pay the artist for each and every use for even part of a song. (Interesting, I take it you have a high def DVD player, and have already purchased all the movies you already own on DVD in high def? <-- not really meant to be mean, but honestly couldn't help making the connection.)

That's great. All my iPhone can do is work and not crash all day. I should really switch back to a WM device - I don't get to use my landline nearly as much as I used to!

I don't have a high def DVD player =D

You can make the connection if you like, and maybe it applies to some people but not me.

I just don't understand why people have such complete disregard for property rights. It's quite sad really because what it says is that we can substitute our own judgment of what does and does not constitute theft for those who actually created the work. It is a logic trap that simply cannot be justified if applied if taken to its logical conclusions.

How about I take one of your cells.

You weren't using it anyway, it was a piece of dead skin you sloughed off by the millions every day.

How about I take the DNA from your cells and mix up a batch of clones that look like your identical twin.

Even better I could start sifting through your personal genome and just take and use the bits and pieces that I like for my own purposes.

No one's hurt, you didn't lose anything. All I did was make a copy.

And that should scare all of us, because the human genome is nothing if not digital.

Im not sugesting you go back to WM at all.
Ive been a strong Apple for over 10 years never settling for a very sad windows OS but Apple really failed smart phone users with the iphone release .The glamor is fading and the true smart phone power users have taken a real hit in the wallet with the phone 5 years ahead of the rest.
It lacks the much needed simple features that you can acquire in a $30.00 slider phone from t-mobile .No company is perfect and are Apple has proven that ten folds.

I was thinking more along the lines of "fair use"/"place shifting". What I think you are insinuating is where Hollywood/Music Industry is headed. Pay per view/listen is what they want. And with DRM they can get it. It is only a matter of time. You seem to be taking the stance that we paid for the license to hear the contents of the digital stream stored on a CD, but in no other fashion*. I don't think that is true. I think we have paid for the ability to listen to the music however we see fit, so if I only want to listen to a 30 second clip of a song on my phone from a CD I have paid for then that is fine.

*Please don't tell me that you have repurchased all the music you own on CD through iTunes.

I find this subject very interesting.
From ringtones to copy write infringement....We all must be very bored

You've got to be kidding. You're all over these forums babbling about ringtones and changing home screens and you're going to lecture about what "smartphone power users" need? I use my phone for business as well as personal reasons, and I assure you the lack of being able to put a picture of my favorite pet on my home screen hasn't impeded my ability to get through the day. Yeah yeah yeah - copy/paste. Right. It's inconvenient, but it's also something that sure as hell doesn't make the phone less effective.

Bottom line - you just come across as some kind of fanboy wailing about a toy you probably very much wanted but for some reason couldn't get. And before you label me with some Apple fanboy nonsense, I don't own any other Apple products save for a 4 gig Nano. I'm someone who got tired of his Treo 700W crashing all friggin' day.

Oh, and if you're gonna preach about superior smartphones and what really real "power smartphone users" need, you're already a joke for even flaunting WM devices. Anyone who needs their smart phone for hard core operation of their business would go with one of RIM's devices before even touching a Windows crashphone.
