I find this subject very interesting.
From ringtones to copy write infringement....We all must be very bored

I dunno, I find the ramifications of using ring tones beyond the scope of the license agreement pretty interesting when you consider what the end result would be if we adopted the same mob rule regarding ownership of digital information in the form of our own genetic code.

If Coldplay can't tell you how to splice or copy or play with their music you downloaded, why should we be able to tell anyone to leave our DNA alone?

Sobe I see your point but this would be a CD you own.You edit into ringtone for privet use.If you sell it that would be considered stealing... am I correct?

I am not a music attorney but it was my understanding that you don't own the music you purchase a limited license.

There, saved you the time.

No True multi tasking capabilities
No A2DP Blue tooth

heheh I will be nice. With All of your smart phone knowledge I should show you respect .after all you were a Treo 700W owner that had a very ruff time in WM land as have many. You should have held out for the WX

Are you suggesting that when you purchase a CD you have purchased to right to do anything you wish to it?
If I was to file share/online or sell by track it would be copy write infringement.

If I sell that CD online as the original or cut songs off CD for my privet use there is NO Copy write infringement .Some would call that freedom

bigmac4ever, do you have spell check and are you familiar with proper punctuation?

You guys can continue now.

I am of the school that if I have legally purchased a LP, CD, DVD-A, etc., it is mine to do what I want for my own personal enjoyment. Not for resale, giving a copy to someone, etc. But if I want a ringtone for my own personal use that is my prerogative.

I am not sympathetic to the music labels because I do not believe they are sincere in their motives. They are not out to help & protect the artist, they only have one goal and that is to make as much money for themselves as possible. They screw the artist.

I was thinking more along the lines of "fair use"/"place shifting". What I think you are insinuating is where Hollywood/Music Industry is headed. Pay per view/listen is what they want. And with DRM they can get it. It is only a matter of time. You seem to be taking the stance that we paid for the license to hear the contents of the digital stream stored on a CD, but in no other fashion*. I don't think that is true. I think we have paid for the ability to listen to the music however we see fit, so if I only want to listen to a 30 second clip of a song on my phone from a CD I have paid for then that is fine.

*Please don't tell me that you have repurchased all the music you own on CD through iTunes.
just to make sure I wasn't dreaming. Yup I posted the opposite of what Sobe believes. Not that what he feels is wrong.

Yeah in the past my understanding was that personal backup/ripping for mp3 device was acceptable by the industry. Apparently they have backed away from that, and the whole issue of fair use seems a bit muddied.

I feel ok with ripping and copying to an mp3 player because I purchased the content and am not modifying it from its original purpose.

And I'll be damned if I can find an easy answer via web search on what exactly the purchase of a CD allows.

iTunes has its own rules of course.

To me ringtones crosses that line, but whatever blows your hair back.
