I know I'd certainly like to have a way to rent 720p (or better) movies. I'd always prefer to have a physical disc, but if I can get an HD movie for a few days (to later decide if I want it on BR/HDDVD) I'd certainly give up a few iTunes points for that.

But it'd have to be VERY few. I don't mind paying, but I really don't think I should have to pay more than half what it would cost me to go to the video store and rent the thing.

it's so close to being perfect, I think at MacWorld they will announce the rentals and AppleTV will double in sales... Apple knows what they have to do, now it's up to them.

the appletv forums annoy me so much. Whatever thread you start it'll turn into a discussion as to how apple can make the appletv better. My question is (in the starting post) if apple will update the appletv software for all appletv users for free if they update the hardware along with the software????

Have you tried the AppleTV?
Mine is used daily, it's amazing.

I second that.

I've previously posted that in the past I was one of the knockers of the Apple TV. I just didn't "get it". As a reseller, I finally got one and it's now my favourite and most frequently used Hi-Fi component. From what I've seen nearly ALL users who purchase the Apple TV love it. I seldom see negative comments about the Apple TV from owners of the product, instead lots of "tire kickers" who don't own them.

Although the Apple TV would be better with a few features, it does what it does brilliantly.

I also agree that Apple has been a bit slack with software updates and this hasn't helped it's cause. Apple hasn't marketed the product at all well.Punters simply don't know how good the product is and Apple has it's fault to blame for this. When was the last time we saw a media blitz on the Apple TV? NEVER. (Not in Australia).

For all those who keep whinging about the features it lacks do yourself and favour and try get a loan of one for a week. You'll find the features it DOES have make it a great (not perfect) device for getting your media from your Mac to your TV.

Conclusion; Don't knock it until you've used it.

It has been Apple's "policy" to continuously update hardware with software fixes. Whether they develop and make available new functionality typically depends: if there is no harm to them, if they do not lose sales on a newer piece of hardware, they will make the new features available to existing hardware owners. That assumes that the old hardware can run the new software.

Apple will update AppleTV for free as long as the hardware can support the update. If, for example, they were creating a new AppleTV for Macworld introduction -- IF -- that had, say, a Blu-ray disk in it, defeated copy protection and then encoded it to your AppleTV hard drive, then the software that performed those tasks would be useless to you.

Apple has, in recent history, focused on new features that enable users to spend more money with Apple. Their focus on ITMS-WiFi for the iPod and iPhone while neglecting obvious demands from consumers for cut and paste, etc., shows the focus of recent software "updates."

As a very happy AppleTV owner, I couldn't care less if they update it ever again. But if -- IF -- they have video online on-demand rentals in the works, you can be sure every AppleTV will have the opportunity to upgrade.

As I $aid before, $omething $eem$ to be driving Apple'$ update$. Wonder what it could be?
