So back in October I bought the iPad Pro 12.9 as a Christmas present to myself. I had ben using it for Lumafusion and basic photo editing. For photos it was awesome and lumafusion ran awesome on it but today I exchanged it for a MacBook Air 256GB at Best Buy. The issue is even with iOS 11 the lack of a real file system just gimps iOS devices. Trying to download MP3's from sites like audio jungle was impossible and moving files from my external recorder into Lumafusion required just too many work arounds. Another thing that drove me insane was that all my drone footage had to be imported into the Photos app to be used anywhere. Maybe I'm old school but I missed a regular OS.

iPad is not a computer replacement, at least for the time being. Just like Apple Watch LTE cannot replace the iPhone.

BestBuy didn't ban u from further returns? See the Apple Inc. & Tech board.

Did you hear about mediahubs? They are wireless routers with built in Slots for USB devices like external hard drives, USB sticks, SD cards etc and with an app like File Browser allow bidirectional file saving and opening, moving copying etc just like what you’re used to in windows or Mac OS. File Browser app also adds all your cloud services. With this setup I have been able to work directly on files, save files from the net through file Browser directly to a portable hard drive, or as card etc. File management is not an issue anymore. Btw that’s a 2 Tb hard drive connected to a Ravpower Filehub Plus I just got from Amazon today infact. It took only about 20 mins to set up and change the default password etc. Though I did have a similar setup before too. LumaFusion will save directly and open directly from the drive using File Browser.

infact that is nice, but with all those hubs and workarounds, you have to carry and consider a lot more than just using a macbook. dont get me wrong, i am writing this on an ipad, but if i have to chose one of them it would be the macbook (pro 13).

Massive downgrade in screen quality considering you are doing video and photo editing, the Air is abbysmal in this regard. Should have gotten a Pro or the Macbook.

@Skika
If you were speaking to me, I do have the 12.9 iPad Pro. Not the air. Look at the size in the pic LOL. Both hubby and I have iPad Pro 12.9s I do video editing on the IPP 12.9 and its absolutely beautiful!

@lezmace The bonus of having a separate keyboard is that, when I travel I may not use the keyboard, for small emails and surfing I can use the onscreen one meaning, I can leave the keyboard at home or in my bag, you can’t remove the keyboard from a MacBook. Also, the Ravpower filehub is smaller then the palm of my hand and weighs less than an iPhone 7 Plus (subjectively anyway - I dont know the exact weights of both off hand). The 2 Tb drive I have is a feather and both are smaller in size than the iPhone 7 Plus. Again bonus is, when I dont need them, I dont have to have them with me thereby actually reducing my carrying weight. But overall, the total weight of my IPP 12.9, BT magic keyboard, ravpower filehub plus and the Seagate backup plus 2 Tb drive all put together, are LESS than my MacBook Pro 13”.

One added bonus of IPP 12.9 : the ability when doing graphics or documents to turn the screen to portrait. You cant do that with a fixed landscape screen. Meaning I can see more content on a portrait document, or webpage.

Ive actually done a full length documentary on the iPad Pro. Want a larger screen for stationary work then get the HDMI adapter and put it through a larger screen. But don’t say you can’t do it or that only hobby work can be done. Check out Lumafusion.

OP addressed this

Except I don’t understand why they said importing required work around a And was complicated. If you use a wireless external drive or a media hub with a portable USB drive attached, LumaFusion can DIRECTLY import media into a project from within the app itself, without needing to use files or a third party app like file Browser. It will find the SMB / NAS itself and import direct without needing to first transfer to the iPad / iPhone... screenshot from iPhone since I’m not by the iPad but you can see second in the import media list is network attached storage.

Is it true that Apple is planning to phase out the MBP’s as the iPad Pro will replace it. I saw it in the Apple news section but it refreshed before I could read the article. I’m using iPad Pro 10.5. It’s a pretty powerful device. But there are too many hurdles to jump through to download music.... smh, I simply hop on my MBP download the file and sync it through my iPad. If this is true that the iPad Pro replacing the MBP, I hope Apple make things more simplified for iPad Pro

To download any media directly on the device and play it on the device try nPlayer. There is a built in browser and the app saves the files in its own storage on the device. Besides that, it can also scan networks and find SMB, uPnP, etc and you can stream media off NAS.

Actually what I do is play the file, hit share & save it to my device. Either iCloud or to my iPad storage.

If Apple just gave us a true Finder and opened the file system to be on par with regular MacOS, that would really be awesome. In some ways, I like the whole SEND TO feature. With a little more work it could be pretty good. Mostly, it boils down to every app moving forward and supporting these features.

For Example, PDF Expert believes it is the file repo. Even though it goes to iCloud, it goes to a folder in iCloud specifically for PDF Expert. I would rather that they update it to just allow me to traverse the icloud files app and let me save it where I want in iCloud.

Microsoft's apps don't yet seem to have direct support for iCloud yet at all. So I just removed them a while back. And then we have the whole viewer thing to deal with. In an email, the app that opens say a PDF is Apple's app. I would like to choose which app opens the view of the file in the attachment. Perhaps I prefer PDF Expert to do this. If I am viewing it in PDF Expert and I want to save it to iCloud, I would think Save To would do the trick, but it doesn't. That saves a picture of it to my photos. Not what I want. I have to use the SHARE button PDF Expert to open the dialog to Save to Files. These multiple cascading methods need to be cleaned up. Too many steps and the language doesn't always world well.

They are not phasing it MBP. They are just pricing it out of the range of the average customer. It’s becoming a high end business machine while iPad Pro is being priced to replace it in this price range.

Thnx for the clarification. Like I said, I saw the article in Apple news but my phone refreshed before I could read it
