gosh, some of you guys are so overdramatic. cut the guy a break...i'm sure none of us know the entire situation.
The bottom line here, is none of us do know exactly what happened, we don't know him and we don't know his mom. It's hard to draw a logical conclusion with all those pieces missing. Ripping off your mom is low, and I really hope it wasn't premediatated!!

Wow 3 pages!

For the record, I was joking when I say I "hoodwinked" her in the OP. I should have said that she gave me a nice chunk of profit instead.

Come on guys, do you seriously think that I would deliberately try to rip off my Mom? God no! As I reiterated earlier, it was her idea of $2500, and she was more than willing to go to the bank, withdraw money from her liquid account, go to the bank that holds her checking account, deposit the money, and later that night, give me her debit card so that I can purchase my new set-up. Yea, so I made off pretty well here, but it's not as if I told her that she was getting my MBP at a bargain; If I did, and had told her that $2500 was a good price, that would be deception itself.

Some parents are just like that, and there is nothing wrong with it, if they just want to help out their kids. I don't think anyone should take advantage of their parents, and I realize that many folks don't have parents that are financially able to or willing to help them out like that

(snip)

..........But if that is what is going on here, cut the kid some slack...his Mom just wants his powerbook, and wants to do something nice for him in return.;)

That sounds right. It doesn't sound THAT wrong. She's not stupid. If he told her that it wasn't a great deal, and a stupid idea to buy a laptop because it matched the kitchen, and she still offered $2500 for it, she probably WANTED to pay more than she had to. She even negotiated the price with him and said she'd pay $2500. And he's buying all that stuff on her card, so she knows how much he's spending, he says he has $20 remaining from what his mum said he could spend. Yes, the MBP was used, but it was 3 days old and was owned by her son.

Are you all reading all his replies? Give him a break. :)

i don't want you to take this the wrong way, but why even bother starting a thread about selling your mum your MBP for $2500? you know that this was bound to happen, especially her being your mum.

To answer your question, I thought that the reaction from all of you would be that it was a good deal for both parties (I get my dream set-up, and my Mom only pays $170 more in return for instant gratification; she is currently using her new MBP RIGHT NOW while I take over our PoS Win98 box). However, I've been forced to defend myself seeing that half of MacRumors thinks that I'm an immoral crook.

Personally i think he's fine. Everyone seems to be missing the point that she is his mom. You yourself said that you saved up a bunch of money for it. And that there's an extended lead time for the item. What parent would NOT actually give their child a little extra on top. My parents wanted to buy my sister a nano, they went through me cause i get a discount.. They gave me an extra 20$ bucks just because. THey've done this often. I don't need handouts, i made 55k last year. It's just something that some families do. I'd do the same for my child, if i buy something from them i wouldn't think twice about throwing in a little something extra for them...it's your child not some random stranger. All you people saying he ripped her off need to get a clue..especially since he was rather clear about her being aware of actual cost and wanting to give him the extra.

:Virtual pat on the back: Gosh, that would be a funny "smilie". But anyways, hopefully you're not going to leave the fam after this stuff.

As I asked before, is this your first?

Aside from my 3-day love affair with the infamous original 1.83 GHz MBP in my sig, this will be my first Mac set-up. Since I am a junior in high school now, I will most likely sell my MBP for market value on eBay the summer before I start college (Summer 2007) so that I'll be able to upgrade to the latest and greatest MBP (Blu-Ray DL RW, 200 GB HD, 3 GHz Intel Chip, 12 hr battery life, etc. :D ) once its available/released during Apple's Student Discount/iPod promotion.

That is a good plan. I also like upgrading. With Macs, you don't lose too much either.

You're original deal with your mother was great! A very fair deal. I know people who'd pay a lot more than $170 to get the machine instantly. Plus, she is your mother, so it makes sense she would like to give you a little extra money, which allows you to get some extras, for your computer.

I hope both you and your mother enjoy your Mac Book Pros! Keep up the good work in school too.

I think the deal was fair. What do you think Apple/FedEx would charge for instant delivery? Next day service for a MacBook Pro size package is $100 for next day 8:30 am UPS. Same day Sonic Air is even more. So it was a fair deal.

for all those bashing the op, have any of you ever heard of a parent buying something from their son/daughter for a higher price as sort of a way to give them some extra money without just giving them some extra money?

don't just assume he was being a dick ripping off his mother, it is possible that his mother is simply nice

I agree.

I would doubt that his mother is unable to fathom the price of a new laptop. She knows what she paid. She knows it's (a little) more than the laptop is worth. I think it's quite condescending to assume his mother is either too stupid or too ignorant to realize what she's done.

It was, as others have said, a way to pass on some money - in the end, very little - and make it seem legit.

If the OP had stated "after helping my mom out during some tough times, she recently won a major settlement and gave me $170," I doubt anyone here would be chastising him.

I'm confused as to why this was posted in the first place?

Then I'm confused as to why everyone feels the need to pitch their 2 cents.

Eh, let the thread die from here out, I say. Not like it's helping anyone.

I second that.

Not quite sure what the point of this thread was and why its generated so many responses - wow we must be bored.

If the litmus test for any thread becomes relevance, half of them would vanish. I don't see this one as being any better or worse than the others. Boredom typically rears its head, but we deal with it and move on to something else.

I don't know why it was posted in the first place, it seems kind of silly to brag about hoodwinking your mom. But to each his own, the OP has a right to post whatever wherever.

Confused about why everyone has to pitch in their 2 cents? Umm, it's a forum...I don't see you holding back your 2 cents;)

I think it was the wording that got most folks riled up. If it had been phrased as 'hey, my mom decided she wanted it now and gave me an extra $170 to make up for the fact that I have to use a POS Win98 box for the next 3 weeks', I think you'd have got a lot more sympathy and possibly even demands that your mother pay you even more for that Win98 punishment!

To my Mom... for $2500. For some reason, when she thought of Macs, she thought of the brightly-colored CRT iMacs and the multi-colored Apple logo of yesteryears. So when I came home from boarding school sporting my new MacBook Pro, she was astonished by its sleekness and design. She recently remodeled her kitchen (stainless steel) and counter-top, and has a special "work nook" at the end of the counter top (I'll post pictures later) where her "like-new" MacBook Pro peacefully sleeps. I sold my whole sig (w/ Apple USB Modem) for $2500; after that, she gave me her debit card and I purchased the following set-up, to be shipped to my address at my boarding school once I go back on the 20th after Spring Break:

1.83 GHz Macbook Pro w/ 1 GB RAM (2x512 MB) and 100GB 5400 HD
Personalized 1 GB iPod Shuffle
Booq Vyper M2
Logitech Z-4i Speaker System - Silver
Logitech V270 BlueTooth Mouse - Silver
B&W Apple Mousepad
Radtech ScreensavR for MacBook Pro

After that, I spent the remaining money on study guides for various APs and the SAT from amazon.com; I have about $20 left.

Needless to say, I hoodwinked her. :D <------- just kidding...

Future Republican!

Why even make a thread about this? I vote this as the most worthless thread so far in the month of March.

Nobody cares about how your mom bought a laptop off of you and then you turned around and bought the same exact computer.

And for the people who did respond to it, you came off as getting offended for being criticized. Go junk up some other forums, please.

Give the guy a break. Man...
After reading some of your posts towards him it makes you seem as if you are worse than him.
Stop overreacting, jumping to conclusions. He gave us all the facts we know. There is no other side. We don't know what his mom really said, only what he is telling us. So there is no reason to give him a hard time. And the 'hoodwinked' her is obviously a joke. If you are too serious of a person to understand that then take a deep breath and relax. Please.
