I think Apple really has to step it up next year

They need to really step it up with the 4th Gen iPhone and the 4.0 software that'll inevitably come. Don't get me wrong, I'm a huge Apple fan, but I think that they've positioned themselves to finish second, much like in the computer market. Granted the PC market is one where Apple could realistically never take first in, but I think Apple could have taken first in the smart-phone business.

If Apple's US exclusivity with AT&T ended this year rather then next, I think things would be entirely different. The 70 Million Customer company called Verizon would be pushing the iPhone right now, rather then Android. I think Verizon running the iDon't commercials may have hurt their chance of getting an iPhone.


Eh whatever, I'm ranting. IMO, if Apple wants to make the most money, they should:

A. Create 3 Versions of the next gen iPhone. One with a Horizontal Sliding Keyboard, one with a Vertical sliding keyboard, one with just the touchscreen. Throw on an amazing processor, a 5+ MP Camera with flash, and I have a hard time seeing there being any gripe about the hardware.
B. Software: They have to add in Multitasking... Its going to bite them in the ass if they don't. And they should allow more customization. I shouldn't have to Jailbreak to get this kind of stuff.
C. End AT&T exclusive ASAP. I have no problem with AT&T, but I have soooo many Verizon friends who would buy an iPhone in a second if was available there. But if they don't get there soon, Droid is going get people hooked, just like people are hooked to their iPhones now.

You do know no matter what the hype, iPhone is overall fastest. Plus why don't you actually look at the real specs of iPhone vs competition?

Yeah, like the above user posted; There will never be a physical keyboard on the iPhone. I think I remember reading somewhere that Apple said that think buttons are obsolete... err something like that.

Plus as much as i'd love a camera with flash, that'd look a bit cheap and a lot like other phones unless they get a pro flash like the ones on, for example, Sony Cybershot's. I wouldn't mind having a 5+ MP camera though. ;D

Personally I think that the iPhone, as far as physical appearence wise, is okay where it's at right now. They do need a HUGE new feature(s) on 4.0, improved camera(megapixel wise), better screen res(if possible), and for the love of god A LANYARD HOLE!!!!! >_______>
 
1. OLED screen
2. multitasking
3. 64gb storage
4. LED flash and image stabilization for camera
5. better quality material/construction for the back housing
 
Oh I fully realize that there will never be a physical keyboard on an iPhone, because of Apple's war on buttons. I was just trying think of what would quell people's gripes with the iPhone, and I know that some people would want that.
 
I've been saying this for a while now, so I totally agree with the OP.

On the keyboard thing. Apple may think they know what they are doing but if they really want to take the market multiple versions of the phone are necessary to cater the people who want phones.

They are slipping. The 3Gs was a let down by far. It brought a few features, but majority of which only required a software upgrade to do anyway. They need to turn their innovation back on to once again take the lead in the market.

Satisfaction figures mean nothing. People are happy with what they have because they don't what they could have.

I laughed out loud when I read the thread title. Apple is absolutely dominating the market right now - one of the few companies in any sector (never mind the tech sector) that appears to have completely defined expectations and the recession in general.

I was talking about their innovation. Not their sales. They have their marketing to thank for that. I am astonished by how many people believe all the stuff in their ads.
 
I want every iPhone to be signed by Steve Jobs himself. Then I won't complain about it.

They just need to work on the OS in my opinion. Make it easier to turn on and off wifi and bluetooth, like the Pre's way.
 
I honestly have no idea what they're gonna do. I skipped the 3Gs cause it did nothing for me that the 3G couldn't do. If they want me to get a new one in june, they have to wow me!
So come on, Steve! Razzle-dazzle me!

Nothing, nothing at all, would quell people's gripes. Apple shouldn't design a phone based on what whiny people claim they want.
 
I sure hope they provide something with the wow factor again to replace the current iphones, but if they don't no biggie. The iphone is still one of the most popular phones available today and that must be at least down in some part to people preferring the iphone, its OS, how it works (its not all down to marketing)

And this is why jailbreaking is so good.

I love the little icons in the taskbar at the top that tell me if I have SMS, email or calendar appointments, missed calls and voicemail. I love the SBSsetting pane - allowing me to turn wifi or BT on and off in a swipe and a touch.

Lots of people like to have information on their lockscreen too. JBFTMFW

I have a 3GS, and its not because of ads, or any crap like that. I just happened to be able to afford an iPhone after the 3GS came out. If you look at AT&T's sales, about 80% of those sales were new customers
 
In other words, make the iPhone just like any other 'phone in the markertplace. NEVER!

pre-n
slimmer profile
oled

os also needs to be worked on a little. Be it user customized backgrounds or summin else I dunno I like the clean ui at the mo but then went I was jailbroken I liked the ability to change things.

SMS tones too.

I think apple need to look at what mobile phones offer as basic standards then add to that. That's what's wrong.

This whole thread is hilarious. Apple is selling more iphones than ever and getting more marketshare than ever in a smartphone markket that is bigger than ever, and some of you act like they're palm. Seems to me jobs and co. have a pretty good handle on this market, dare I say a lot better than any of us tossing out our own theories on a message board.
 
We're not talking about selling phones to new users, we're talking about getting people to upgrade their old 3g/3gs phones.
 
the 3gs just what we thought it would be.. I remember all the rumors of them saying it was going to be redesigned. and blah blah blah.. but truthfully. what more can they do to change it physically? The phone fits perfectly in the hand.The only thing i can see them changing is adding 2 buttons that you can set to whatever you want to.. and maybe come in more colors like the nano.. A keyboard? why would they do that? Then they would have to make a special keyboard for every country.. Instead of just putting the software on it..

And people saying that it needs more processing power.. Seriously?? Did you know the 3gs puts out about the same processing power as the wii? The 3gs takes cell phones to an entirely different level. I've had an iphone since it first came out.. The first day i got a 3gs, and gave my 3g to my sis. i was immediately happy. For all you that saying the 3gs is not worth it and that you are staying with your 3g. From day in and day out.. the 3gs is amazing.

OS. Apple is making the iphone as simple as possible. Theirs not alot of menus or anything like that. It could use some improvements.. But we all know.. Apple.. Every 3 years their making changes... and the next gen iphone with 4.0 will by far be the most anticipated phone..
 
My thoughts on Android haven't really changed from last year:
IMO, I think they're not really focussing on beating Apple(if that happens, then it's another feather in their cap), but more intent on overtaking Windows Mobile's 'smartphone-on-all-other-devices' position.

Yes, I know 'Droid Does' and all that, but that's more of a Motorola and Verizon thing, rather than a Google one.
Taking the Google Voice drama into account, if Google was really looking to obliterate the iPhone, why give it Street View, the Google app, with voice search, etc, and not keep it for their own Android(should really be called Google Chrome) OS?

Up until very recently, they shared some executive board members, so I'm sure there are still some mutual alliances going on.
