I am in agreement, it’s my main computer now. After using my iPP exclusively for months, I sold my macbook and gifted my iMac to a family member. I made absolutely sure I didn’t need either and (so far) I do not regret my decision.
Look, it’s one of those things where different folks have different workflows, jobs, and preferences. In my line of work, I rely heavily on email, using the internet, reading, and annotating. The iPP not only allows me to do all of this, it actually allows me to do all of it even better. Why? Well, there are two reasons. First and foremost, the Apple Pencil. As someone who writes a lot, this was, as many have noted, a real game-changer for me. Being able to do all my writing and typing on one unit is simple, effective, and minimalistic. It eliminates the need for multiple notepads, notebooks, and loose papers. I take a lot of notes for work and for personal use and everything is handled neatly in Notability. Second, iOS 11 takes the iPP to the next level. The new multitasking features have made workflow more intuitive and quicker. I actually have all my apps and folders in my dock and never have the need to go to my now empty home screen. The ability to open everything in split view is also huge for my workflow. And I really like this idea that I can use my computer as a touch screen device.
What would take the iPP to a level where it’s a true macbook replacement? In my humble opinion after months of professional use:
- The option to use a mouse, or to improve gestures so that a mouse is ultimately not needed. While I can do without it, there are still some instances where it can be a little tricky without a mouse.
- Creating a hybrid macOS/iOS system. Take what’s limiting about iOS and replace it with what’s great about macOS. Give developers the ability to make macOS apps on iOS. Give the iPP more operating power/storage room.
- A better Smart Keyboard (and one with a backlight!).
- The ability to annotate iBooks with the Apple Pencil.
But in the meantime, it’s without a doubt my favorite Apple product ever. The possibilities are endless and I think that Apple fully realizes that the iPP is the future. I predict we will see the iPP and macbook become a hybrid within the next 5 years.
