I am a self-proclaimed expert on detecting sarcasm. If you watch the keynote, you can tell Jobs is saying it with a sarcastic tone. Then the audience laughs with him. I doubt it will launch at 6. I have lined up for many things from event tickets to game consoles to Nikes. No store has ever launched a product after the opening time.

I didn't actually watch the keynote yet...but you could be right. I can't really detect sarcasm by the live text updates on macrumors. I do know that the grand opening for the apple store on fifth avenue in NYC was at 6pm. I may go there after work if its true.

Hopefully in the next 18 days, we find out A LOT more details regarding just about everything related to purchasing this fabulous thing.

i just finished watching the video from wwdc07, and i thought the same thing too. he didnt seem to serious about it, so im doubting it will be on sale after the stores have been open for so many hours.

Tiger was also launched at 6:00pm on a Friday, so I don't see why they couldn't release the iPhone at the same time.

Panther was released in the evening too if memory serves me correctly. makes sense, more people are off of work to go check it out. and its a nice little part to throw too. makes headlines.

what company in their right mind would turn down a mob of people with gobs of cash?
One who wants the evening news cameras on hand to bear witness to the mob. If Steve wasn't joking an official denial probably would have been issued by now, as it's being reported by the mainstream press. I remember standing in line for Tiger, where they opened the doors at 6; and all the other mall-goers looking at us like we were idiots. It's 6 o'clock on the 29th...

Apple Online Store

What about ordering from online Apple store? I don't think it was mentioned. Will it be the same day and, putative, time?

I agree toneloco

6pm is legit.

they are not turning down people with gobs of cash. the people that would kill for it will do so at 6am or 6pm so they are taken care of, the casual buyer who is interested will make time to get to the store or online and finally the professional can either leave work a bit early or will already be off by 6pm.

6pm

I think 6PM is a joke also.
1. What's to keep the employees from selling earlier to their friends.
2. The stores could potentially be mobbed all afternoon. (This would create the media pop you spoke of)
3. To complete a sale, new contract or extended contract could take a minimum of 30 minutes per sale. This would limit the number of phones moved the 1st day.

i think Jobs would have said something about him joking, like saying, "No, no, you can get them when you local stores open" or some jazz like that!

I don't think it was a joke. In the business world, release dates & times are rarely jokes.

The 6:00 pm time slot is also not unlike Apple releases in the past (e.g. Tiger).

The only real question is, is that 6:00 pm local, PDT, or EDT? ;)

That is probably a good thing for them as I doubt that they will have enough right away to keep up with the demand.

is it a leap year, oh my goodness are we not getting iPhones until next year. now that was a joke.

6pm, wherever you live is when they will be on sale.

With all due respect have you ever been to an apple launch? Generally they close the store for an hour or two before the new product is ready so they can set it up. Apple doesn't let employs "sell it early" they would be fired immediately if manger found out.

I'll have to watch the keynote later to see what the deal is, but I think he was serious. Why would he joke about something like that?

I went to the apple store online and did the chat thing with customer service and asked the same question...they said it will go on sale online at 6pm but when i asked if it was 6pm eastern, central, etc. they said it has not been stated yet...personally i think its ridiculous apple and cingular are bombarding this product to the market and have yet to provide any of their people with information...

I thought I'd delay my flight out on a business trip till the afternoon on the 29th so I'd have a chance to get the phone, activate it, and put some stuff on it before I had to hop on a plane. But when I heard the 6 p.m. thing I just said "eff it" and booked my flight for Thursday instead. But I'll be nowhere near an Apple or AT&T store on the 29th, I think. Are the chances pretty good it'll be up for order on apple.com?

I don't believe it was a joke, you could launch a product later in the day. Just like if someone gets a shipment in halfway through the day and then puts the item out, if they had previously been sold out.

It sounded to me like Steve was sarcastic about the 6PM thing. I think his words were something to the affect of, "I think at 6PM" with emphasis on the word "think". This is what makes me think it was sarcasm - plus the laughter of the crowd who apparently detected the sarcasm as well. Plus, on the keynote slide, when it showed the June 29 release date, even after he said the 6PM thing, it never appeared on the slide.

Just a side note - did anyone notice that Apple's stock dropped more than 3 points today? Do you think it had something to do with a disappointing keynote address (no announcement of new iMacs, lack luster Leopard demonstration (in my opinion), Barely anything about the iPhone, etc).

It has already been confirmed to be true. Yes, most of us noticed. There has been discussion all over the forum. Don't mean to be rude, just responding with answers.
