Does anyone know at what time of the video of the keynote he utters these words? I'd like to check it out myself but don't have the time to sit through the whole thing.

It's at about 1:14:10. I too think it's a joke. Steve says "I believe it's 6 PM in the evening they will go on sale." After this the crowd starts to laugh. Why would he say 6 PM in the evening- it's totally redundant.

some video games go on sale at specific times, like 2:00pm on launch date. setting a time isn't unheard of. that way all time zones can enjoy the product together. 6:00pm is noon Hawaii time, so even their stores will be open. there's no 6-hour iPhone envy that way ;)

it's happened with a fair share of products, so it could very well be true.

I watched the keynote last night too and thought it was a joke as well. The joke of course is that at the 'All Things Digital' conference he was asked whether or not they'd be launched on the last day of the month, and it turned out just being the second-to-last day (the last business day).

There are a few legit reasons why they would go on sale at 6pm...
  1. Shipments arrive friday during the day. If they were to arrive the day before there is a possibility that the street date gets broken by a AT&T store. At least this way, it would only be a few hours and not an entire day.
  2. They need another work day to test the software
  3. Phone released after market closes
  4. TV news crews show up for 6 o'clock news live from the Apple store

Also some good reasons against it, the first and foremost being that if an AT&T store has 3 or 4 terminals, closes at 10PM and 50 phones, they have to go through the entire process of choosing the phone, ringing up the sale, selling voice and data plans, selling accessories, setting up the account and activation in 15 or 20 minutes. Fat ***** chance.

It is funny to see how people study Steve's speech, body language, and tone to such a degree. 6:00pm makes sense because the average Joe will see these long lines for this phone all over the place and not just Apple stores buying an Apple product. It will boost up that mindshare even more to all the people that still live in caves.

i think teh iphone is a joke.

oh no wait, i didn't say that. ;)

precisely what I was about to say myself, now after reading abut dubious falsh support I will say 'iPhone is a joke!!'

atleast this first generation iPhone as it stands .. you can get a WM2003 PDA for 25% of the cost and double the features.

time

if they do release at 6pm its gonna be a long night for apple and AT&T employes. it takes about an hour to set up a plan and get everything gravy......and if even the at&t stores only get 20 phones and plan on selling out, thats 20 new 2 year contracts and 20 500 to 600 dollar phones.
THATS way more then they do in one day. nobody is gonna go to the stores becaue of the mob. they should open EARLY if they are concerned about casual store traffic.

i really hope they launch early. my whole day was planed aroun it

With all due respect have you ever been to an apple launch? Generally they close the store for an hour or two before the new product is ready so they can set it up. Apple doesn't let employs "sell it early" they would be fired immediately if manger found out.

I've never owned anything Apple until I got my IPOD Shuffle 6 months ago. This Apple 6PM launch is new to me. I'm going to my CingulAT&T store later and see if they can offer any insight.
I'm looking forward to getting one.:D
I'll be going to the Cingy store as opposed to an Apple store.
I thank you all for your info and insight, as I am new to the Apple world. This will be my 1st foray into Mr. Jobs' universe.

dunno if this relates at all, but i went to the grand opening of the oakbrook, IL store and that was in the afternoon/evening sometime....

And with 20 employees that's only 1 hour. ;)

Plus, I don't expect there to be many plan options with the iPhone, so that will expedite the process even more.

A 6:00 PM release time is easily doable, and the benefits outweigh the burdens.

contrary to my previous post, I now think that the 6PM release time is spot on. During my lunch break I went to the AT&T store across the street from my office and was greeted by that big banner of the iPhone when I walked in. I asked one of the sales reps various questions about the iPhone to which he had no answers (surprise, surprise!). I asked him if it is indeed being released at 6PM, and he said yes. He also mentioned that they haven't told them anything about how many they will be getting or anything else except that they are expecting them to be delivered by an armored vehicle. I thought that was pretty cool. So for those of you waiting in line for the iPhone on launch day, if you see an armored vehicle pull up, there's your cue that the phones have arrived.

yeah you have a point, what i am hopeing for is that no one shows up! where i live there are 3 apple stores within 20 miles of my house and 2 are in malls also there are a million cingular stores! one mall has an at&t store and an apple store. crosses fingers!

But how many cash registers and terminals do they have setup in the average AT&T store? 3-5? Its still 15-20 minutes a person for the first night.

And as a final note, the email apple sent out today had an iCal appt of 6PM to "pick up iPhone". So it does look likely.

Ehh, at my Cingular store (which my older sister works at), the most I've seen working there was maybe around 10 employees--and only a few were at registers, selling phones and whatnot. I doubt there will be 20 sales reps at every Cingular store in the U.S.--I doubt they even have 20 reps hired:rolleyes:

Let me guess: You live in the San Fernando Valley, CA? :)

I think you mean "when the manager finds out". It'd be kind of hard to hide that sale at 2:00 PM for an iPhone stolen out of the back room. And if it isn't rung up, it'd have to show up on the network at some point...

I just called my brother up to ask about the sale thing and he said when we get ours he will just keep the boxes at the store with the payment and run it through after the release but we can still have the phones ahead of time. w00T! If anyone is in the Southwest CT area let me know and I can hook it up :D

OMG! If you could do that....

Just a side note - did anyone notice that Apple's stock dropped more than 3 points today? Do you think it had something to do with a disappointing keynote address (no announcement of new iMacs, lack luster Leopard demonstration (in my opinion), Barely anything about the iPhone, etc).

That happens after every keynote.

id actually go so far as to say that it does so because people speculate so much. with all the hype they cant help but disappoint.

I, for one, am mildly disappointed with the release date and time. I can't quite figure it out. It's the last business day of the 2nd quarter, the start of a holiday weekend where people will be travelling (like me), and almost the end of the business day prior to a weekend where UPS and FedEx are not fully staffed.

I live in San Antonio where we have the largest Apple store in TX, AT&T world headquarters, and you can't throw a stick without hitting a AT&T wireless store. Then the release date came out and I now find myself visiting family in Plymouth, WI where the closest Apple store is 90+mins away just outside of Milwaukee and the closest AT&T wireless corp store is 30 mins away in a very, very small town. The next closest AT&T store is 60+ mins away. Not feeling good about things at this point. Needless to say, I have been looking forward to iPhone since the production was announced.

Then the release time is announced, 6pm. Fireworks on the lake start at 8pm and my daughter loves the fireworks, so things just got worse.

I got with the Apple online store to inquire about overnight shipping starting the 29th and was told to date, overnight shipping would not be available. I'm not the most patient man out there when it comes to new "bright, shiny" things, so I don't know what to do. I have a pearl now from AT&T and that is the biggest POS blackberry has every produced. There has to be a design flaw in regards to the voice piece as I cannot sustain a call with any consistency. I have tried several different units, same result. I've heard the same from other people as well.

I'm gonna keep my fingers crossed and hope for the best, but I would think (and hope) that with the amount of attention the iPhone is getting, expectations sky high, Apple will make sure that "SHORTAGE" is not part of the release experience.
