Not really.

Folding phones sound and look cool for demo, but in reality, it’s cumbersome and cannot be a great phone nor tablet. It would be too thick and less durable for a phone, and it would be too cumbersome for a tablet.

The foldable phones are simply demos for the technology, which will be used more subtly in existing products. Eg. Apple already use foldable OLED on the X/XS as a way to minimize the bezel and prevent the phone from having a chin.
I do believe Apple will release a folding iPhone in due time. I do believe there is a market for such a device.

The biggest question I have is the thickness. Keep in mind however, the Mate X when folded is thinner than the original iPhone. It does however have a much larger footprint, so I really can't say whether it would be comfortable to carry at these current dimensional specs in a front pocket. Perhaps Apple can offer something thinner when folded if/when they release their own version.

If Apple can offer something that is manageable in a front pocket, then I would purchase on day one. I would love to be able to fold out my iPhone as an 8" screen.

Folding iPhone is coming but not just yet
Now that Samsung and Huweia are starting to sell them Apple will be forced to follow suite

It should be worth the weight
I would hate to think that Apple has all these patents pertaining to a Folding iPhone and never uses them

These are some strong assumptions. Also, I wouldn’t say Apple is ‘forced’ to do anything the competitors release for products. Aside from investor standpoints, Apple may never release a folding iPhone, and they don’t need to. Apple _should_ release a product they believe has enough maturity and demographic appeal for a device like a folding iPhone. Right now, it’s a very niche category for a folding smart phone, and the price points are far from being reasonable. That technology will continue to refine and mature, and prices will eventually subside, but I don’t expect Apple to release a folding iPhone anytime soon, maybe if ever.

As I've said on other threads Apple could pay me $1,000 and I wouldn't want a folding phone. Bad enough today that phones really don't fit in pockets without the size a folding one would be

Folding phone will happen when they get folding screens. Apple is not going to make a phone with a hinge. Dumb idea.

Current/imminent folding phones are prototypes that shouldn’t even be on sale.

I agree partially. Samsung obviously has a product that looks good on the outside, but suffers a contingency that flaws the product entirely. However, Huwaei’s folding Phone hasn’t really had anything negative encounters thus far, what it really comes down to with R&D, is the amount of time engineers invest ‘test failing’ these products and the overall durability. So I initially question how much testing was conducted on the Galaxy fold for its durability purposes before it was released.

Apple products are under extreme scrutiny by their customers and media. Folding phones have a designated weakspot by design. These gen1 foldables are going to wear, tear and break. Likely they’re going to do that fast.

It will take some time before the durability is up to something Apple would feel comfortable releasing*. Right now the screen needs to be plastic, for example. Apple would never go for that.

*Disclaimer. I know Apple constantly misses the mark in what high durability standard they strive to achieve. (dGPU failings, butterfly switches, the list is long.) However I wouldn’t think that they would go for releasing a product they know with 100% certainty is going to need a replacement program.

Despite the Galaxy Fold issues, my desire for a folding smartphone has only increased dramatically watching hands-on videos of the Fold and a longer video of the Mate X by GSMArena. I'm a lot more impressed with the Mate X vs. the Fold. I absolutely think Apple will offer a folding device but not until 2020 at the earliest and perhaps not 2021 realistically. I do believe this will be a new category in the same way the Galaxy Note essentially created the phablet market that thrives today.

People saying 'no thanks' are far too quickly judging the earliest models. In due time the folding phones will only get better and cheaper and far more desirable.

I don't want one unless the devices can be as thin as today's devices and fold into a iPad Mini size tablet. Oh and also have the phone be similar to today's phones when folded (not some 3" screen or whatever the galaxy fold has).

It would have to be thinner than today’s devices, 3-5mm unfolded and 6-10 mm folded with a glass screen and no gap when folded for me to even consider it.

Don’t really care about the external phone display, won’t really use it as a phone anyway. For everything else Apple Watch and airpods have me covered.

I guess what I really want is a foldable tablet with those parameters not a foldable phone.
Still Even then it would not really have any significant changes to usage and application when unfolded, it’s still an iPad. Only change is when I’m not using it and it in my pocket or the table.

Let’s see what apple can come up with, I’m not completely convinced yet.

I want a new iPhone SE, personally. Everything Apple sells now is way too big.

I think the market has gravitated towards larger phones, simply because of the larger batteries that encompass it. But, I do think Apple still has a mindset that they know they can offer devices that other competitors won’t anymore, even though the SE 4 inch form factor likely will never be what it once was in the future, I still think Apple obviously have a smaller phone on the horizon that hopefully can still offer some tangible benefits with the size and latest internal specifications without a heavy price tag.

Pretty much agree with @Relentless Power but if the focus goes from hardware to services, Apple will need a cheaper/smaller phone to get more people on the platform. So I would expect a future model aimed at getting more people into the ecosystem
