I want the iPad Pro.

so I been looking at the new iPad and so far I do believe it looks great, I keep saying how apple says that this is a laptop replacement but I don't really agree with that but I would love to use an iPad as my main computer. there is software that I need and I do ten to game and can't really game on an iPad. my MacBook is always on due to my work. my questions is? should I even get an iPad the only time I can see myself using it, is when my iPhone is charing and I want to lay down in bed but I can't see giving that much more for the iPad Pro bc it have so much extra stuff that I just don't need. I was thinking about getting a normal iPad for just $329 but the look to it is out of date (I feel) then I was just thinking to get me the amazon fire tablet for $150 and call it a day. I guess my questions is, should I get an iPad Pro or just got get a cheaper tablet?

So you want to buy 900 $ iPad for the rare cases your iPhone is charging. Ok let's just say that you charge your iPhone every day. Let's just also say that it takes 2,5/3 hours to charge your iPhone. Now given the fact that you work and that you can charge your iPhone at night when you sleep I would say that at least 3 days out of the week you won't be available to use the iPad.

So to sum up you want to pay 900 $ for a device that you would use 4 days in a week for no more than 2.5 hours. In other words 10 hours.

It's your money and it's up to you but I would not pay that price for a device that I plan to use like that. If you have them though sure go ahead.

I bought the $329 iPad recently to replace my Air 2. You may think it is or looks out of date but for what you appear to want it for it will fine.

If you want a tablet to do tablet type things, browse the internet, play games in the App store, play music, watch videos and all that general stuff then that $329 iPad works well.

The thing is, performance has never been an issue for the iPad when it comes to doing all the things noted above. I bought the Air 2 in 2014, today it runs absolutely fine, not underpowered, does not slow down and so on. The only reason I replaced it is due to the 16GB space limiting me and I needed more.

Whilst that $900 iPad has IOS on it you are paying for a device that does little more than the $329 version when it comes to general day to day use. And it won't do it much better.

I think you should start with your needs and then select device that fits your needs and is a reasonable price considering how much you will use it.

I have the regular iPad and honestly I don't care if its design looks modern or not. It's in case anyway. For me what matters more is if it's functional and can serve the purpose I bought it for. It can so that's all that matters.

A definite advantage the iPad will have over another tablet is that when your phone is charging, you can still receive and send texts, as well as answer phone calls from the iPad (assuming you're on wifi).

In general you can "handoff" tasks from one iOS device to another, so you can pick up where you left off. You can even copy text on one device and paste it on the other.

Right now, the 2018 9.7" iPad is $309 from B&H Photo.

Don’t go with the Fire tablet no matter what. I actually got one for about $20 a few months ago thinking I could use it as an iPad replacement until the new iPads come out (which they now did). The screen is low resolution and widescreen which makes browsing the web a chore. It is also slow and laggy. Case in point, I only used it a handful of times to watch some Prime Video. I do not exaggerate in saying that I would use an original iPad mini if I had the choice between the two.

But it’s SUCH a nice device to use, i really don’t mind at all.

Check out my thread on the Fire HD 10. Depending upon where you live, you can pick one up during the holiday shopping season for $100. Clearly it isn't anything like the new generation iPad Pros, but the Fire HD 10 can actually do quite a few things that those iPad Pros can't. (some of those things are described in that thread)

It can easily do perform those tablet tasks that you describe.

I use an app called Duet Display to connect my iPad Air 2 to my MacBook Pro via the lightning cable. It would also work with the base 2018 iPad. Since you have a Mac and an iPhone, the base iPad would fit a nice gap between the two devices - at least it has for me. I created an invoice template on my Mac using Number and Pages, and then I fill it out onsite using my iPad. You can definitely save a few bucks with the amazon tablet, but it won’t integrate as well with your laptop and phone.

That's an interesting idea. I've never done that myself, but it should be possible with an app like "Air Display 2" (once Google Play is installed on the Fire HD 10). I don't think any of these software-based display extenders can do anything that requires responsiveness (like video playback).

I use Duet Display with the iPad connected via lightning cable for video editing on my laptop. I have the video full screen on the iPad and the timeline and tool pallets on the MacBook. It works really well for me.

There’s also an iPad app called AstroPad, but I haven’t tried that one.

Once you use it I doubt you will though, some people got turned off. Hey apples marketing of it, being a budget/educational tablet. But the fact is it’s the same great iPad that everyone knows and loves.

The more I use mine, the more I feel good about purchasing this over the pro with the hundreds of dollars saved. No regrets for this, the display is still beautiful and the same PPI as the pros

The 2018 iPad is my 2nd recommendation (if the HD 10 wouldn't work out for the OP).

I use mine daily (even more than I used my 12.9 iPad Pro). It is the one true genuine bargain in Apple's product line.

True but if you use your car twice a month you might not want see the point spending 50, 000 on it. Now if you use your car every day for hours you would want to spend it. And if you use your car to do your work, you for sure would invest a lot more.

Btw as I am a person that does not drive (never wanted to and honestly it's better for the society if I don't drive) I do see a car as something to get me from point A to point B. On the other hand I am Software Developer so my computer is really important for me. Especially the display as I am constantly looking at it and I have eye issues. I am willing to spend a lot on a computer and display, but I am not willing to spend on other stuff (like say gaming mouse because I don't play games).

Yes... the HD 10 has more RAM, faster processor, and nicer screen 1920 x 1200 (vs 1280 x 800 on the 8)

I have yet to see a car-based analogy that works well with consumer electronics.
