I have an Extreme and Express in my home and I have never had one issue with them, unlike my family or friends that use other brands who have issues quite often. I've been contemplating buying one more through eBay to increase the signal strength in my home, but I'm a bit weary getting something used that is so old. Are there any other brands that could successfully work with extending the network?

We use Google WIFI mesh, very stable and easy to setup - my old Airport units are only capable of 2.4 ghz......

I have been using a first generation AE since it came to market in March 2008, when I bought my first Mac Pro. I never had a single problem with it...until a storm blew through Friday and apparently fried the unit. It was in a surge protector and nothing else was harmed but my trusty AE has gone to the Great Network in the Sky.

It honestly really bummed me out. It was a day I have been dreading since Apple discontinued these over 2 years ago. Thanks to everyone who provided networking advice in this thread, I need it ?

on the land line mr. smith.
I wish they didn’t discontinue them as well, maybe in the distant future? Haha.

Not likely. My take is Apple usually only enters and stays in a market when they think they can have a fairly unique appeal, and they can sell products with a good margin.

While that was very true early to mid history for wifi...the market is swimming with good products now, at low prices. Unless the market changes...and there is a hole to fill, not likely.

Airport like Xserve is a product that not really needed anymore.

server only really needed as tiein point to Windows/Linux tools for managing macs in enterprise.

other people’s networking now offers what airport did so no longer needed.

whilay I personally use Meraki as worked for a partner and did the cmna so got the kit for free, if setting up buying would definitely be going with the ubiquiti products.

simple setup, easy to build network up, security camera and even lighting possible.

if just want a basic network then the amplifi range is great as well and probably enough for what average home wants.

I'm happy to have found this thread. I'm a somewhat informed tech consumer, not a trained tech pro. I can DIY a lot of setups, but somehow I've been baffled and stymied by setting up home wifi routers. Until years ago when I bought my first Airport Extreme. Wow, that sucker just - works. I'm on my second one, and can't even remember how long it's been in service. Lately I've had a few times when I discover my wifi network is on, but has dropped internet connectivity. Just happened again a few minutes ago. I "fixed" it by unplugging the Airport Extreme, waiting a minute, and restarting it. But. I know Apple has discontinued it.

I appreciate the recommendation upthread of Amplifi. Sounds perfect for me: simple to set up. And I don't need to get fancy with mesh and signals over a long distance. I'm in a condo, no need to broadcast a strong signal to more of my neighbors than necessary. ? [Edited a few minutes later to add: I ordered the simplest router from Amplifi. I'm working from home and can't afford to have balky wifi in here.]

Now and then for grins, I look at the network names list on my MBP. Some of my neighbors have a sense of humor: "It burns when IP," "Getaway car," "DEA van," "TheHorde." And some of them need a tactful suggestion about privacy. Like the woman whose wifi network bears her full name. And her router must have one honking strong signal, because she's in the building across the fricking street from me.

Glad you found it. Let us know how it goes. As for names...yeah, good ones. I used "FBI van" for a while. I am surprised how many don't use a non-default name...

Im still amazed that Apple decided to discontinued their router line, it was seamless, it just worked.

i'm into my 6th year of using my Airport Time Capsule AC-Wifi version, in that time i've had no issue with it.

Now its time to look at my options as we are renovating a larger apartment, and as its larger and i'll be soundproofing this apartment, i can see my trusty Time Capsule struggling for full coverage.

It's a shame, apple didn't continue making routers, or at least brought up an another company to enhance their offerings.

I did notice i can still buy the Airport Extreme new over here, I'm tempted to buy a few and run cat6 cables to the furthest rooms while im re-sheeting the plasterboard after installing acoustic batts, connecting these via ethernet from the time capsule to boost wifi coverage.

But knowing my luck, the time capsule would die after completing it, lol, it would be a lot easier if apple released another Airport option.
Like others have stated, AmpliFi or UniFi / Ubiquiti. AmpliFi being the home consumer version. UniFi more business oriented or enthusiest level.

The founder worked at Apple on the Airport devices and later left and started Ubiquiti.
